Never done an 'ultra', but always wanted to?
Resolving to get off your butt and be a
little more active in 2008 but don't know where to start?
Join me for a loosely-organized New Year's Day running
classic. Run 1K or run 100K on this 50K
out-and-back course. Yes, it will likely
rain and you will get the nice new running shoes your Mama gave you for
Christmas all muddy. (80% trails, 20% paved.)
Yes, you will likely get lost in the woods in a city of 2 million, so bring
bus fare and a cell phone so you can rescue yourself and get to the finisher
party before the free beer is all gone.
Check out the event website for details.
Important Note:
This was always intended to be an intimate little affair with a handful
of crazy friends. The number of crazy friends seems to grow every year.
I will cap the number of participants at 100
this year and almost that number have already registered.
This means the event will likely fill by mid-December... if you
are planning to join me, please
register soon!
May all of your New Year's Resolutions come true!

Frequently Asked Questions about Vancouver New Years Day
Fat Ass 50
Q: Is there a
'Skinny Ass' this year? (As in,
"Can I run less than 50k?")
A: Sure... get
your skinny ass out there. See the FAQs
for measured distances from 5K to 50K.
Q: Is there a
'Fat Ass Duathlon' this year? (As in,
"Can I get official credit for a swim in the ocean afterward?")
A: You bet... in
fact, it's expected that you will do a polar bear swim in the Pacific
afterward. Note: In 2006, Bill "Numb Nuts" Russell
earned recognition for lasting almost 11 minutes in the ocean after his
run. Betcha can't beat that!
Q: Can my
friend/kid/significant other do something useful while I blow my brains out on
the run?
A:
Absolutely! Here are some thoughts for
what they might do

Kintec Aid Station at Spanish Banks - Woo Hoo!!
The fine folks at Kintec Footlabs have offered to set up an aid station for you this year. They will have offered to provide some sport drink and sport bars for you.
The aid station, under a Kintec tent, will be in the parking lot on Spanish Banks where you cut into the trails of Pacific Spirit Park at roughly 17K and 33K. (Look for RP#3 on your course description or the "?" on the Pacific Spirit Park map.)
It is always cold, windy and nasty at this location. Danielle Macleod will manage the aid staton. Graham Archer may join her. Please be sure to thnnk them as you pass by, as they are going to the trouble and expense out of the goodness of their hearts.
If any of your friends or family are looking for a place to meet you or to help the event, this would be a good place to do it, as Danielle and Graham would certainly appreciate your company.

OK, I'm thinking that I will probably finish in 6 1/2 ish hours - so if anyone else is slow and wants someone to run with, I would love company!
Thanks!

Hi Caitlin, Not sure how
Not sure how many participants are out there at your pace, but I do know that I am a slower runner. I will do at least 25km. The full 50 is probably unrealistic for me (although I haven't given up on it) due to a lack of training and a inflammation in my hip.
While I hate seeing you end up running alone and getting into the dark towards the end, I think you'd have more fun starting with everybody. I do know the city very well and although the course has changed because of a devastating wind storm last year, I am confident of not getting (majorly) lost. I am also willing to bet that I am slower than you are...
Hope to see you at the start. I will be arriving in a silver Subaru with a black roof box with lots of stickers. Make sure to introduce yourself.
