The Eagle Ridge Bluffs site has a letter/email campaign so no need to
reinvent the wheel. Getting people out there might just motivate them to send the email or fax, and feel the energy from those camping out. We need people to send letters and talk to the premier and IOC, but as someone who has been on the frontlines many times, I know just having people show up and chat/ show support is motivating. Looks like not much support for this run. I will also say I am a bit surprised the Knee Knacker crew is being quiet and not getting political.

Terry Lewis, a CFA member and trail running guru, feels strongly
enough about the proposed new highway that he and his partner Jan have
been camping out at the Eagleridge parking lot. (Vancouver folks
will recognize this pavd lot as the start of the Baden Powell Trail and the
KneeKnacker.)
My family and I were up to visit Terry on Saturday evening.
We sat around the campfire for a while and met some very nice
people. The campfire was at one end of the parking lot and a big
assemblage of heavy equipment was at the other end. A security
guard representing the construction interests was at the entrance to
the site.
While the thought of a run in support of the trail is at least
something, you might ask yourself what it will accomplish apart from
getting your miles in? How will a run influence the political
decision makers? Unfortunately, the road construction is a
foregone conclusion unless a lot of people start writing letters,
camping out and getting arrested.
You know how it works,
Dom. If you really want to see the decision to punch the road
through reversed, you have to make a lot of noise. Why not
organize a letter-writing campaign to the Olympic Organizing Committee
informing them that Vancouver may have made a misrepresentation in its bid for
the 2010 Olympics? 10,000 emails with a copy to the premier and
the prime minister indicating you also won't vote for them might get noticed.
The problem is, the place
will be clearcut in a few weeks.
Good luck with your run. I'd at least join you were it not that I was heading up to Powell River to help save some of that old growth we passed through on the Sunshine Coast Trail!
Unfortunately, we'll not be able to participate as we are out of town.
The proposed new highway will cut through a piece of nature that a lot of Fat Asses are familiar with through the annual Knee Knackering North Shore Trail Run.
I do encourage every body to get informed and make their voice heard. The Coalition to Save The Bluffs has a great website up at: http://www.eagleridgebluffs.ca/ with lots of background information and the latest scoop on planned events.
For Saturday, apart from the run Dom is planning, the Coalition invites you to join them at Eagleridge Bluffs. Bring your family, friends and picnics.
Join biologists, naturalists and "birders" on guided hikes through the
unique arbutus ecosystem, and along the Baden Powell Trail to the
Wetlands and the old growth forest.
Come and share the rich learning environment and beauty that this
delicate ecosystem offers to all ages. Hikes
will leave every 2 hours starting at 12 noon until 6pm. Live
entertainment at 2pm.
