Beware of Bees

I have to say that tonight’s run will have been the last time I am able to wear the club shirt on a run. See I’m deathly allergic to bee stings and bees hate black. So I’ll have to keep it for the after parties and for around town. It’s a great shirt and I get comments all the time even great for braking the ice with the opposite sex. if anyone thinks this is not correct let me know, thanks.

This interests me on a personal level, as my son reacts badly to insect stings and bites.  I did a quick internet search and found a lot of different advice.  What was consistent, is that bright colours seem to attract bees.  One site contradicted that stating that bees are mostly attracted to white.  Several sites said red was an attractant.  Most site also mentioned scents (cologne, perfume, shampoo) being attractive to bees and other insects.

I didn't find any statements hinting that bees sting because the "hate" a certain colour. It seems like the opposite is the case, they are attracted to certain colour...although the jury is out which colours.  Most bee stings are caused by people walking barefoot and stepping on a bee/wasp or by drinking from a pop can or bottle with an insect in it.

Anyway, I hope everybody has a nice bee and wasp sting free summer.  Take care.

Interesting

I heard bees were attracted to yellow.  It would make sense that they are attracted to colours (as in flowers).  I remember one run were I was followed by a pesky wasp.  I didn't relate this to the shirt I was wearing, but funny enough the other runners in my group were not bothered. So it was something about me (smell or colour?).  I was not wearing black.

Were you actually stung on your run?  Hope you are fine.

Ok blame it on discovery

I got this notion after remembering a show on the disovery channel that tested diffrent colors on bees and in that study black was the one color that was attacked the most.  now it could have been some far off killer bees or something but I remember it was black that they attact. I don't realy have anything to back this up with, I was stung on the ass during a bike race last year "black shorts" but I'm sure it was just beacuase I was a "fat ass"  hope I didn't worry any one it just sucks to cary an epi-pen eveywhere and have to think what would happen 50 miles out on a trail. I'll see if I can find any more info. and if any one else has any suggestions please let me know, thanks
