back home as well....and fresh up from a nap

Hi there,

Well managed to run 6:50 today with the group and went as far as the Chute and back to Cleveland Dam for a nice pick up. Everyone was looking strong when I made my turnaround. Looking forward to another 1/4 at some point near the am (hopefully) or later today to pick up my auto in deep cove. Best of luck everyone - I will be watching this string for updates - let me know if anyone is interesed in joining me for a nice run into the cove. I need to head out to Whistler by 10:00 am tomorrow am. - 604.603.7672 or laddie.hannam@shaw.ca

Thanks Craig for all your help and another fun event on my end and grueling run for the real runners our there!

ugh...re Gary's cougar waring post:(

Back safe and sound

I made it back home in 4: 20 for a total of 32 km or so. I didn't see a soul for 2:40 minutes until I ran into Penny , that soon passed as I got to the Grind start . I must of passed 100 people from the turn off for the Grind and the gate.I think  3 tour buses  must of dropped them off. I arrived at the Dam in 3:33 ,where a large group of runners ( some Fat Asses) were being briefed on their run.I also picked up some trash along Nancy Greene way . Thanks for putting the event on and good luck to the rest of the  runners . By the way I just got up from a 2 hour nap.

Cheers

Des

Results

What results? Surely you don't expect results yet do you? The event is not even half over. But I can tell you that there were 10 people at the start line with at least 4 of them surely well prepared to complete the full Vancouver 100.

On the way to the start line in Deep Cove we got a sprinkle of rain. I also saw deer on the road and police at the side by Cates Park. But I would not let any of that stop me from getting to the start line in time. Once I rolled in to the quiet and empty parking lot the others soon followed. Well, most of them. We brought our game faces and our trail brains and suited up. The briefing was brief and the photo was done by Ron Adams that came along to see us off. Laddie and Baldwin showed up in the nick of time and we were ready to go at 5:00 am sharp.

Desmond wasted no time taking the lead with Dave right behind. The rest of us were busy chatting away like it was a slow Sunday stroll with all the time in the world to get there. Des and Dave continued to take the lead and clear the spider webs and chase the bears away for us while the big group of Karl, John, Kirsten, Gilles, Baldwin and Laddie pretty much stuck together until Lynn Canyon and perhaps beyond. I made a quick dash across the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge and b-lined for the bathroom after disposing of my trash load. A thorough washing of the hands and I was back on the BP and heading toward Mountain Highway where I would be hooking up with Sibylle to do the remainder of my run to Cleveland Dam. As it turned out we followed a trail down beside Nancy Greene Way and went all the way to the yellow beacon (home for Sibylle).

I didn't see the others after Lynn Canyon but I did hear from some fellow runners (Penny and Rod) coming toward us that Des and Dave were still in fine form. I hope Dave can keep up that pace until the finish 'cause it's a good one. Des was heading to home a few km from the Dam as he has for most or all of the V100's. Consistency is everything.

So now, after a ride home from Sibylle and a good cleansing, I'm off to get my car and camera from the Cove. I'll be posting the starter photo asap and keeping you updated.

The weather, etc

The Vancouver 100 weekend is shaping up to be sunny, hot, and fun.  The normal temperatures for this weekend are around 11-19C. The max temp yesterday was 25.8C. That means we're going to have another warm one, just like in 2007. The difference is that two years ago we didn't have days and days of scorchers (a Vancouver scorcher that is) in advance. Instead it was rain, clouds, cool, clouds, rain, and then on the V100 weekend, blam, sunshine and heat! Then back to the usual on Monday. It made things extra challenging and one or two of us dropped out for good measure.

But now the runners have had a chance to get used to the higher temps, humidity (again, that's Vancouver humidity), and will have less snow to contend with than usual I imagine. In fact, the snow might be a welcome relief on Saturday.

I would also imagine that some serious sunscreen is in order for the runners heading up Hollyburn and Black Mountain (twice).

Good luck to all the runners and thanks in advance to the crews for taking care them. Be sure to call me if you need anything.

Craig

1:10 pm update: It's actually looking a little cooler today. Still warm but maybe not a scorcher. The high is expected to be 24C and it's only 22C so far. Tomorrow's high is expected to be 22C. Things are shaping up!

Vancouver 100 picnic at Cleveland Dam

If you're itching to get out of the house on Saturday afternoon come and visit us at Cleveland Dam (Capilano River Park). The runners will be coming back to this, the 3/4 mark, sometime late in the afternoon or early in the evening. You can call me to check on the status (Craig 604-728-4293). We'll be hanging out there, having fun, sitting in the sun (hopefully) and watching the runners stream in.

It's also a chance for you to qualify for a CFA point or two if you officially sign up. You could do your own run on the course or head out with the 100 km participants to scale Grouse Mountain on the BP Trail as they head toward Deep Cove. Keep in mind that it may be darkish by the time they are on Grouse so please bring a headlamp or some other light emitting device.

hope to see you there,

Craig

p.s.  go here to see who's in.
