What:
- A sailing, trail running/hiking weekend adventure.
- A sailboat "race" around the outside of Bowen, Anvil, Gambier and Keats Islands.
- Fell Running: 4 peaks on 4 islands, approximately 46 km of trails, 8,300m vertical climb
- Along the way some or all of the crew follow trails and run/hike to the top of each island. Challenge events. Some partying and singing of nautical ditties
When:
- start: Friday 14 May 2010 @14:00 on the water off Bowen Island
- finish: Sunday 16 May 2010 @ 16:00 at Doc Morgan's Pub (Bowen Island)
Where:
- approximately 40 nautical miles on and around Bowen, Anvil, Gambier and Keats Islands
Why:
- Winner with the most points gets the coveted Tilman trophy. Trophy likely involves an old pair of running shoes.
- Bonus points are earned for pub stops, additional peaks, baking bread, etc.
How:
- No entry fee. No Air Miles.
- Due to the extreme nature of this challenge, entry is by invitation. Contact Ken Legg (ken.legg (at) ca.pwc.com) if interested in an invitation.

- History: 2009 - May 23 / 24 weekend was really good. 2008 - April 12/13 was great, but still lots of snow on Lidell
Howe Sound Islands
Mt Killam (Gambier Is) (844m) 2,785 - nicer and easier than Lidell
Mt Gardner (Bowen Is) (727m) 2,399 - 17 km round trip run or hike from Snug Cove - est 2.5 - 5 hrs
Leading Peak (Anvil Is) (765m) 2,525 - 10 km round trip hike from beach - est 4 hrs
Gambier Island Traverse
Mt Killam (Gambier Is) (844m) 2,785
Mt Liddell (Gambier Is) (904m) 2,983 -
Mt Artaban (Gambier Is) (615m) 2,030 -
From New Brighton, run up Killam then back down to Gambier Lake trail, then over and up Lidell, then cross Island past Lost Lake to Artaban and the back to Brigade Bay, for pick up.

2010 Tour de Howe Sound - Photos and Videos

Competition Points
According to host Ken, points would be awarded throughout the weekend for certain behaviors. Teamwork would be rewarded. A prize of some sort would be presented to the boat with the most points over dinner and beverages at the conclusion of the 2010 Tour de Howe Sound.
As circumstances would have it, few (if any) of the participants knew the rules until Ken announced them Blue Eyed Mary's Restaurant.

Gambier Question
Hey Ean, enjoy yourself, that sounds great! Have you done the trip you describe above, approaching Artaban from Liddell? We were wondering how doable that is. Is it logging roads that join the Gambier Lake area to the approach to Artaban or is it trails and what condition are they in? If you've done it before, how long is the distance between the two areas?
Artaban Trail
For what it is worth, saw a well-flagged trail just north of Gambier Lake running east to Artaban: didn't venture up it, but it looked like it would continue to be well-marked.
My memory is fading
I was hoping to GPS and describe the routes to the Gambier peaks by now, but haven't had the tools or the chance yet.
There are some good writeups on Gambier from last year by Crerar and myself that might help you. Pls let me know offline if you plan to do these soon and if you will have a GPS with you, as this could help everyone who follows.
Bagger Challenge Qualifiers?
Personal experience with the 2009 Baggers Challenge has shown that it takes some doing to bag the Howe Sound peaks. Water taxis are available, but challenging to coordinate. The "Tour" looks like a fantastic way to have a blast and get at some nice peaks early in the game.
The way I read the new, improved rules of the 2010 North Shore Bagger Challenge, any Howe Sound peaks bagged during the Tour de Howe Sound count for this year's competition.
Ken, as the winner of the 2009 Baggers Challenge, I was wondering if you had any comments on strategy that you'd like to share? In particular, for those baggers and baguettes who would like to see the quaich take the place of honor on their mantles during the winter of 2010/2011.
Q1. Should a competitive bagger work from the outside in or the inside out? (e.g. aim to bag the island peaks first, in which case, they should pull all stops and wrassle up some boats and beg for an invitation to the Tour de Howe Sound)
Q2. What are your personal views on sandbagging from the strategic perspective? (e.g. leave the easiest peak for the last day of the bagging season?)
Q3. What's in it for the skipper? I have spoken to several salty sea dogs about the prospect of being active participants in this misguided adventure. Do the runners provide the steaks, wine and bar tabs and commit to scraping the hulls of barnacles over the course of the weekend? What might the non-running, non-hiking skippers do to earn points toward the coveted Tilman Trophy?
