2008 Seawall 100 - Results

25 October 2008 - 10 starters

Event Report by Gilles Barbeau:

It was a beautiful fall day for the first run of the Seawall 100. Ten runners were at the starting line with 3 of them having expressed with more or less conviction that they were going for the full 100 mile distance.

Despite a solid performance for the 50 mile distance by Tim Wiens in just under 8 hours, the 100 mile distance remains unconquered. Not even our legendary 100 miler, Mr. Karl Jensen was able to master the course. He said he would be back next year for his revenge. At this point of the conversation I would like to re-introduce you with the following comment about the course:

“The Seawall 100 is probably the easiest 100 miler around but don't fool yourself it will test the best of any long distance runner. A veteran Ultra-Runner will tell you that so much pavement and flat running will tax your body parts in ways that you did not imagine existed. “

And I can assure you that Karl can testifies to that. I drove John and Daniel at around 10 pm to meet with him in Kits and to spend the night  running with him. Despite such lovely offer of companionship Karl figured that the pavement had got the better of him and that there was not enough glory in this thing to go on. So the decision was made to pack it up and head home to share a warm bed with his sweetie. Of course Daniel and John were deeply disappointed but managed to hold it. Such is the world of ultra-running. It's not suppose to be easy, that's why my mamma doesn't run ultras.
Well, that’s it folks. I’m sure counting on being there next year and beat this thing.

Ran all night alone?

Did Karl really run all night, alone, to run 100 miles for no particular reason? Karl, you are the king.

To Run or Not to Run

To run or not to run, that is the question;
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The aches and pains of outrageous pavement,
Or to quit against a sea of misery,
And by quitting, end them. To stop, to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The agony and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to — 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To quit, to sleep

Thanks Cheryl,
But there was nothing royal about this performance.  Heading out for the second loop I felt pretty good.  I was well loaded with calories from Lorraine's grilled cheese sandwiches, John's soup and Chad's cookies. Had a strong run across the bridge, but started to slow down on the out and back to the new Convention Centre.  The knees and back were hurting quite a bit.  Going around Stanley Park I did more walking than I wanted to.  I stopped at McDonald's by the Science Centre and had a couple of cheeseburgers.  I was in there for about 10 minutes and cooled down too much.  When I came out the cold really hit me.  I managed to run a bit which warmed me enough to stop the shivering, but not enough that I was comfortable.  The legs were dead.  I walked most of the way to the trail behind the Kitsilano Yacht Club.  There I met John, Gilles and Daniel who were coming out to meet me.  My van was parked where the stairs go up to Point Grey Road so I could use it as an aid station.  John had offered to run with me from there to the 25 mile mark and back, and then drive the van back to North Vancouver.  Daniel had decided he would run with me to the finish, that's after having run 25 milers earlier in the day.  After seeing my miserable condition, and much discussion, they convinced me to call it a day.  I love you guys!
It's obvious that my road days are over.  The joints just can't take that kind of punishment any more.  Give me mountain trails with lots of hills for walking breaks.

Wise decision

Great job. You got enough miles in to get the training, no point at all in getting injured.

...and you're smart too!

Nice job Karl! Personally, I'll take the threat of bears & cougars in the night over the weirdos & drunks of a late-night seawall. Did you run with a tazer?
