ean! it's too early to call you & i plan to be fast asleep by the time it's an ok time to call you, so hopefully somebody will get this msg and let you know: i'm not joining your happy bus today; if i run to the clouds i'll get there on my own (but i think i'll probably just sleep instead). amazing how great the idea of doing the run today sounded until i actually got off the plane at 5am... :)
see you somewhere on the trails, someday, but probably not at buntzen today!
Hey fellow Fat Assers, Pete SS here, event host for Run to the Clouds.
First, sorry for Radio Silence if you have been checking the site just waiting for someone to jump in and clarify what is going on, I was out of the country for 3 weeks, then home for 2 days earlier this week before I got levelled with a mean flu bug, taking me out till yesterday afternoon. My goal to get out and check-update earlier in the week went out the door.
Anyway, don't despair. We were out on course today checking things out.
The good news is, THE RUN IS STILL ON, and yes, it is still super beautiful out there !!
The bad news is, yes, much of my original route along "Lake Side Trail up the West side of the lake is still closed due to lake levels, as is the floating bridge and trails accessing it down at the South end of the lake.
But back to good news again, there is an alternate route that we will be using tomorrow that will work just fine for our run. Lake View Trail will be subbed instead of Lake Side, and is clearly marked by BC Hydro as their "detour" route around the closed areas of my original course.
Because this detour is actually about 3+ kms longer than the original lake route, for the group doing 25 kms (most of you registered), that will mean you no longer have to include the out-and-back spur along the gravel powerline road way up high-- yes, that mean climb to the high point, just to turn around and come back down. Don't worry, for those of you wondering if you will still get a workout in, Academy still has to be climbed and the new Lake View route is certainly hillier than the older Lake Side route, so YES, I think you will be suitably impressed.
And don't forget they will have cold beer and hot burgers waiting for us at the Golden Spike in Port Moody. I just scooted on by this afternoon and reconfirmed that 20+ will be dropping in on or before 2:00 pm so they are holding a spot for us.
I'll go over final route changes tomorrow, but don't stress, they are all easy. Heck, probably easier to follow than the big route instruction set before. :)
Tim and I were up Running to the Clouds today. Thanks to Heather V. for guiding us around the early part of the route to keep us on course, and to Pete and his crew for ensuring we headed in the right direction aroung the north part of the route. The detours are clearly marked, though we did notice the west side of the floating bridge did not have tape or a closed sign... not that I'm suggesting anybody take the bridge. I'm just sayin'. There's snow on the higher parts of Lakeview, the top of Academy/Eagle Bluff and all along the powerline. Expect some mud and a few little creeks running down the trails here and there, but it's all really runnable. And beautiful!
I think we saw you and Tim on the top of Academy. The route was about 4km longer if you just sub in Lakeview Trail. We also went across the floating bridge twice just for fun... it's fine. No real detour that I could see on the north end of the lakes... it looked like we were the first footprints of the day up Old Buntzen. Kelly, Jeremy and I had a blast - thanks for the route idea.
hey folks! looks like action jackson's happy bus is coming back early (after the short run, & no pub)... just wondering if anyone else from the north shore is heading out to buntzen & planning to do the long run & come back after the pub, for carpooling purposes?
although really... after an overnight flight, i probably should just do the short run anyway... but thought I'd check anyway!
best way to get in touch is leave me a voicemail on my cell phone: vancouver island area code, 415 7314
Buntzen is still pretty flooded and the bridge at the south end is CLOSED and Fenced off. I ran it last weekend. The majority of the Buntzen lower trail is CLOSED and fenced off due to flooding and bridge repairs. To go around the lake now, one must go south up the academy trail hill (the one up from the outhouse at the equestrian parking lot) , across to the Buntzen store, down the hydro road then hit lakeview trail. At the North end of Buntzen, the lower trail is also fenced off, so you must go along the road ( and maybe hit academy trail on the way back if you tire of the road, and want a bit more hill). Total route is about 9.5 miles.
I will take another burn around tomorrow or Friday to see if anything has changed from the above info- but I highly doubt it. It has been like this all winter.

May have room for one more person if you're looking for a ride from North Vancouver...
So far, Sibylle and I are planning to leave at about 8:45. Picking up Ryne Melcher and Kristin near Lonsdale and #1. Will aim to stick around for a beer and a burger afterwards and leave PoMo by 3:00 or so.

Kindly send me your measurements. If it can fit in the back seat of a Subaru between Kristin's and Melcher's, there's room in the Happy Bus for the TeaGirl! Pls call or email the coords of where you are staying and I will see if I can convince the chauffeur to show up at your front door.
my ass is fatter after my holiday of not much running and lots of eating & beer-drinking!!! hopefully it will just be a nice amount of cushiony :)
i shall email the coordinates to you - but it prob makes more sense for me to come your way since i'm coming from the west & we're heading east. actually, i'll call you, maybe later today or tmrw.
see you sunday!!! hoooray!!! (just went snorkelling in my CFA shirt. and other bathing-suity stuff too but that was one of the things i was wearing. saw a 3-legged turtle!)

There are a few of us who would love to attend but can't make it on Sunday. Unless anyone knows of a reason why we can't (a conflicting event on those trails, etc.), we are planning to show up and Run to the Clouds a day early. Same start time. Same 25k route. Same chicken-shit excuses for not jumping in Buntzen Lake afterwards.
I'll get my fellow Saturday mutineers to register and make a note in the comments box that they're running Saturday. Tim will be making an appearance so it should be fun, and yes, we'll send the names, times and maybe even a photo.

Yes Ray, that was us. What a great day to be out on the trails. Too bad everyone else had to show up a day late! ;-)

Ride from Burnaby or Skytrain?
Hi all,
I would need a ride from Burnaby or anywhere along the Skytrain, or I can transit to the North Shore if needed and maybe take the North Van Happy Bus.
I can also go to the Braid Skytrain station, right by Highway 1, it's a quick loop out and back on the highway. That's probably the easiest for me.
I plan on running the 25k, and it will probably take me anywhere between 3 and 4h.
For the drive back, it will probably be easy to get a ride from one of the many fatasses.
Thanks,
Eric.
I can pick you up at Main St. Science World skytrain at 9am
It would be great if you can make it to the Main St. Science World skytrain station by 9am and we could go direct from there to buntzen in my car. let me know.
Great!
Sure, I'll be there, thanks a lot!
I'll plan to be there from 8:50am, in front of the Skytrain station, at Main and Terminal Ave.
One more seat available.
Will be picking up Dario at the same place as you, Eric.
There is one more spot in the car if someone needs a ride.
Last seat
I've love to get a ride with you, from Main/Science world station, I'll be there around 8:50 also in my CFA shirt, maybe a jacket also :)
Thank you
Craig
