Squamish Scrambler - 17 September 2005

Summer is almost over, did you make it into the mountains?
NO,I MEAN REALLY MAKE IT INTO THE MOUNTAINS...

Ever pass through Squamish and look up at Diamond Head mountain and
say, "I'd love to climb that one day?" Well, here's an opportunity to take a run at it!

The Squamish Scrambler is a scramble (trail run/hike) up Little Diamond Head mountain in Squamish. It's not a race. It's not a technical climb. This event is intended as a longer, low-intensity training day with a group of like-minded athletes and adventurers. There is plenty of opportunity for running though, and the return run will make for some great downhill repeat training!

If the weather cooperates, we'll enjoy spectacular views of the Tantalus Range, Sky Pilot and Howe Sound. There are several categories of participation on an out-and-back route. Red Heather cabin is a 12K round trip on an easy trail for the whole family. If you can climb the Chief, you can scramble to the Elfin Lakes cabin...a beautiful round trip of 22km. The summit route to Little Diamond Head is an additional 10K out and back from the Elfin Lakes cabin. There is also the possibility of ascending 'The Gargoyles' and 'Columnar Peak' along the same route. Given that the ascent to the top of Mt. Garibaldi (which many people mistake for Diamond Head) is quite technical, you have to promise you won't even think of continuing on this scramble...but you can be sure that a summit attempt will be a topic for discussion during the run!

The run is free for Club Fat Ass members. You can join CFA for the year for $35 (includes a technical t-shirt and about 20 free events), or take out a day membership for $15. Please help me make sure we start on time by registering online at www.clubfatass.com/events/SquamishScrambler/registration

Looking forward to seeing you on the 17th!

Thanks,
Gary Robbins,
Host of the Squamish Scrambler

Let's hope for great weather!

I am planning to bring our children up. They have hiked the Chief, Black Mountain, all of the BP, Hollyburn Peak etc. We should be fine for Red Heather. Hopefully there are more children to join us?
