I don't know how many of you guys and gals train alone but I would say that for most of the week, running alone is a fact of life, with the week-ends for running with your buddies. Most of your mileage should be mid-week, if you are trying to get your long run in at the week-end you have wasted your mid-week training opportunities. At the W/E you can blaze a trail or two and kick up the intensity or take a break from your high, easy mileage, and enjoy the company.Don't rely on the those two days for you mileage, get them in mid-week. As an Ultra-runner, you have to know how it feels to run when you are feeling shitty, learn, from doing it in training , there are bound to be days when you are not at 100%, take a long , over-distance training approach to it and learn to get over it quickly, make it in to a positive excersize. Learn to go longer and easier during the week and work on your efficiency and form.Try and find the perfect stride, where it feels effortless and you could do it all day. Out and backs work really well as you can predict your return time very accurately and therefore maximize your run, how much turn-around time do you need to get showered up and fed and back to work and you've got a full day! Think in terms of hours per week and try and build up sensibly to say, ten hours mid season and ramp it up before a biggie. Plan your spare time for running, for the whole week, and work backwards from your W/E running hours. That way you will keep your friends happy. ILTS (I love this sport.)
