Best Ultra Marathons in Canada

I was recently approached for a list of the best ultra marathons in Canada.  Ones that are crazy, fun, historic or are otherwise noteworthy.  I thought I pass the question on to you.  What are your favorites?

My personal list (out of races I have either done and volunteered at) is:

  • Vancouver New Year's Day Fat Ass 50 (is there a more inspiring way to start the new year?)
  • Stormy 50  and 100 Miles (great community event, 10th year, superb organization and volunteers, non-profit)
  • Kneeknacker North Shore Trail Run (knarliest 50km anywhere!)
  • Great Walk (great atmosphere)

Best ultras i've done

1) Lost Souls Ultra - Lethbridge AB 2) Canadian Death Race - Grand Cashe AB

How about a new run on an old one

I so love the trails at Cathedral Lakes. There hasn't been a race through there in years so I'm really excited about Fat Dog. It will give runners & volunteers like me an excuse (and company) to get in there.  And Fat Dog starts in the Okanagan and ends in Manning.  I have wondered about that trail since I heard it existed - who hasn't?

Valid excitement, but I don't

Valid excitement, but I don't think that FD counts in this thread as it hasn't happened yet. Can't be a favorite until you've run it.

If I had to pick from the ones I have either participated in or volunteered at, my list would include:

  • the Knee-Knackering North Shore Trail run (my first Canadian ultra)
  • STORMY (the only ultra I've done every year!)
  • the Great Walk (liked it so much I did it both ways)
  • Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50 (the run I love to hate)
  • the BC Sri Chimnoy runs (good food.  I think they died)
  • Elk Beaver Ultras (for the simplicity)
  • Sulphur Springs 50K ('cause I grabbed victory from Melcher)
  • the Midnight Sun Marathon and Ultras (also dead.  Fun to go to Baffin Island)
  • Walk in the Park 50K (Kamloops is hot and dry and has cactus)
  • Silvertip 50K (nice alpine.  died and gone to heaven)
  • Larch Hills 50K (also dead.  The fake bear scared the crap out of me)
  • Mountain Highway Madness (mind numbingly fun)
  • North Shore Enduro (a classic.  Tough to get lost)

Don't ask me to rank them... that would be like asking which of my children I love the most!

BTW, Sibylle, since you went to all of the trouble to list them, you should share the list of all Canadian ultras and contact info for those who might be putting together their race schedule for 2010

Vancouver 100

An Ultra challenge like no others. It was my first all night run and is an incredible confidence builder for the 100 mile distance.

That said I don't think I will ever do the whole thing again. But then I wouldn't be a fool, would I?

V100

Hey Gilles,

If I can get accepted to participate, I plan to go for the V100 this year.

See you there?

Jason

Does that mean I have to do it too?

We'll need to make some arrangement for crew. Lucinda said she would not do it again but I'm sure I can persuade her to meet us at one or two locations.

Since you asked...

YES, you should do it too! I may have LOTS of help thanks to some friends on the North Shore, but details are TBD.

I should mention, however, that I'm using this as a 'serious' training run for STORMY 100 in August. Of course, nothing with me is TOO serious ;)
