2008 Vancouver NY Day Fat Ass 50 - 85 Starters

Yes, I guess you could say we kicked off 2008 on the right foot... or 2008 is off to a running start... or har, har har (add your own corny running-related play on words in the comments below!)

Just under 100 runners participated in the 15th running of this Vancouver tradition, and for some reason, we received an unusually large amount of media coverage this year. "What's the big deal?", I asked many of the runners as we enjoyed our little resolution run. It got me to thinking about what is normal and my circle of friends.

Take Gilles Barbeau, for example. For a warm-up, he and 9 friends ran our 50K course last week. Gilles ran a marathon yesterday and broke 5 hours today. Is Gilles normal?

Or Ellie Greenwood. Ellie finished 3rd overall, broke the woman's course record by a good bit but didn't appear to break a sweat. Then there's Gary Robbins: Partied until 3, took a spanking from Ellie, says he got lost, and still sets a new course record by opening a can of whoop-ass on the home stretch.

A lot of signups came in between Christmas and New Years, as if running a 50K was something folks do on a whim. I lost track of how many people whined about not running over the last 6 months (Craig, Sibylle...) and then waffle about whether they do 25 or 50K at Comosun and SW Marine. "Oh, Hell, we've run 25K with no training so why not double up and call it 50?" Is that normal?

Is it normal to drink 50 beers on New Years eve and hope to run 50K on New Years Day? How about with a bad Achilles tendon? Wade Repta gave it a try. He make it about 35K before deciding it would be better to save the Achilles than set a course record for drinking and running.

To my knowledge, none of the participants in this years' event tried to break the record of 5 minutes or more in the ocean after their run. Not sure why, because the water was almost tropical this year!

Benny the ultraPooch became the first dog I know of to complete the entire 50K distance. Thanks to Gottfried Grosser for being the hare and bringing Benny to the finish in well under 6 hours. For that accomplishment, Benny got steak for dinner.

The weatherman promised rain and high winds. The weatherman delivered temperatures around 6C, little or no wind and not a trace of rain. Thank you, weatherman! In the 15-year history of the event, I believe that's only the second time we’ve not been pissed on.

Mea culpa. I screwed up and left the shower key in my car. Sorry to those of you who ended up spending an hour or more jogging on the spot at the end of your 50K. Robbins, the one who waited for me the longest, also set the record for longest under the shower at around 30 minutes.

Many thanks to Danielle and Graham from Kintec for the great aid station, Pete Stace-Smith of Norco, Kintec and Baldwin Lee for the draw prizes, to the Fat Asses who picked up trash during their run and to the many people who helped measure the course and otherwise help during the year. Thank you, as well, to Tim, Craig and those of you who chipped in for the nice recognition trophy. Sibylle and I apprecite it very much.

The reporters at the start, Spanish Banks, the turnaround and the finish said their audience thought it wasn't normal to run, swim in the ocean or do anything at all active with a hangover on New Years day, for that matter. Too bad, they missed a good run!

To Caitlin from Texas, Penny who came from North Van, and all of you other first-timers, congrats, thanks for picking this run to loose your "virginity" and welcome to the fraternity of ultrarunners. Whatever distance you ran and for whatever time you spent in the ocean, congratulations on your accomplishment today. In my eyes, you are normal.

Happy, healthy 2008 and may all of your resolutions come to pass!

As far as I'm concerned, you guys are the most normal people I know. What better way to start a new year than to celebrate with happy people that are willing to challenge themselves way beyond what they once thought was possible. And then to realize myself that running with Sibylle and adding an extra 25km to my planned distance seemed like the best way to spend my day was fantastic. Special thanks to the weather gods for letting me wear shorts and no special gear and get away with it. Hey I didn't get lost this year, yahoo! And the aid was awesome especially the surprise waiting for us under the Burrard Street Bridge on the way home. Thanks again Sibylle for sharing the day with me and thanks again to both you and Ean for bringing us all together once more. Craig

I apoligize to the fast runners

It was me who kept Ean and the shower key from getting back sooner . I told him to go ahead ,but he wouldn't leave me .I think he thought I would pull what Al Harman did a few years back and fall asleep in the bathroom at second beach. Thanks for a great day Ean and Sibylle. Well done Sibylle in finishing the 50 km. Sorry I didn't stay longer to see both of you receive the trophy. It is a well deserved prize. Thanks for bowing out of the points contest and letting me win the shoes as well. I'll try and win out right next year by picking up more trash. A big thanks to Kintec for the shoes. I get my orthotics from Graham at Kintec ,so if anyone needs orthotics ,he's highly recommended . If only he could put something in my shoes to help me to lift my feet a little bit higher and quicker, especially at around the 30km mark. Thanks to all the aid stations and the organizers des

Enjoying my 15 secs of celebrity status...

So I go to work on Wednesday and I get quite a few congratulations on that "Ass thingy race" even though I didn't actually do the full 50km. I feel sorta bad that Ean didn't have his best time as he had a few "drinks" at the turnaround which of course led to the shower delay and Gary wearing what appeared to be a throwrug. But it all worked out in the end. Congratulations to everybody, Happy New Year!

Club Points

Congrats to Sibylle Tinsel and Desmond Mott for winning the 2007 Club Fat Ass point series! Sibylle opted-out of the prizes, so Desmond came away with a new pair of shoes thanks to Kintec.

Here's a footnote to the results that shows how points were allocated:

*       Event Host point
**     Crew point
***   Trash collector point
****  Bonus  point for helping a fellow Fat Ass

Ha, ha. New Year now. I have you all beat!

Nomination for Bonus Points

I just got a note from Norco Pete nominating Sue MacRae for a Club Fat Ass Point Series Bonus Point for helping out a fellow Fat Ass.  Turns out the group around Pete and Sue noticed that Texas Caitlin had fallen back and was concerned about her well-being.  Sue volunteered to turn around to find her and make sure she wasn't lost.  A big thank you to Sue and all of the Coquitlam group who made sure, Caitlin finished her first 50km well fed and without getting lost!

Along the same lines, I'd like to nominate Craig Moore for helping this sorry Fat Ass achieving her first New Year's Resolution.  Craig didn't plan on running the full 50km, but readily agreed to accompany me, when I realized at km 14 that my group had a car waiting for them to bail out.  Craig also refused to leave me on the return trip at Spanish Banks, when I had decided that I would call it quits and call a cab ;-)  He listened to my whining and was dispensing advise to get me through the last 30km ;-)

Photos?

Here is a very cool slideshow of photos of the run.

If you have photos of the run you'd like to share, please post them to your flickr account at www.flickr.com.  Add them to the ClubFatAss Flickr group and tag with VancouverNewYearsDayFatAss50, VancouverNewYearsDayFatAss50-2008 and ClubFatAssEvents. The photos will magically appear in the slideshow and in the Members in Action block to the right.

If you're new to this, Image Uploading help is posted here.  As usual, you can also email the photos to your Chief Executive Fat Ass and she can post them.

New meaning for Flash....

So was I the only one to be flashed on the north side of Lost Lagoon? At that point, I was too tired to even react, so hopefully he wasn't too disappointed in my lack of enthusiasm. Thanks to Sibylle, Ean and all the people that make this event possible. Never would I have imagined that a) I would run this far nor b) run this far on Jan 1st. Where do I sign up for next year? Thanks Glen for encouraging me to go in the ocean. After kissing a fire hydrant, how could it get any worse? Sorry I didn't make it over to MC Grill. I made the mistake of laying down... Happy New Year. P

Yikes

A full frontal...I checked with Ean if he had heard from others...but apart from him mooning Pete Stace-Smith (and perhaps his guest Caitlin from Texas!), we haven't heard of others getting flashed. Pretty brazen, considering that there were so many people on the trails.

This just in from Penny: Hi

This just in from Penny:

Hi Sibylle - my time is not correct.  Perhaps in my absolute exhaustion, my
writing was incoherent, but the time should be 5 hours 6 minutes.  I would
absolutely love to be one of those people that could ignore a 20 minute
time diff like that, but alas, in good conscience, I can't do it.

Thank you so much for encouraging me way back when to consider this event.
This is likely one of the biggest accomplishments I have had.  Will
definitely sign up again for next year.  Give my thanks to Ean for getting
me up the big hill, much faster than I would have done on my own.

I wonder if I was the only lucky fatass to be flashed on Lost Lagoon?  I
was too tired to have much of a reaction, but it was a little startling.

Happy New Year!

A note from a participant

This just in from Jane...it's funny, so I thought I share it (hope you don't mind, Jane):

Dear Ean,

I do apologise if you've already received the message below; when I attempted to send it as a comment from your site, my virus protection program went into a panic (largely because it seems to think no one should ever have my email address). I tried to reassure it, but succeed only in making the screen disappear. If it flew through the ether to you, then you can discard this message. If not, here's what it said.

As I couldn't find anyone hanging around the fire hydrant after I kissed it, I thought I'd better let someone know I was alive and well and how far I went and how long it took. If there were instructions for all that, I missed them. I'm sorry; I promise to pay more attention next time.

I made a few attempts before I left the area, but all I managed was to offend several people who had been doing a 5 km with the Running Room. I didn't mean to offend them, but on reflection, I can see that approaching someone and saying "Fat Ass?" in a hopeful tone might not be the best way to win friends and influence people. If this comes back on you in the form of a lawyer's letter from the Running Room, please feel free to deny all knowledge of me and/or to assure them that I'm now back in the institution and unlikely to be the cause of further distress.

Back to the run. I intended to do 25 km, but I forgot to bring the note that said where you should turn around if you wanted to do an out and back. Eventually, it occurred to me that finding 12 1/2 km or thereabouts on the course description might give me a clue . . . (sometimes I wonder how I get through the day). By the time I stopped and had a look at the directions, I was on the path between the Jericho and Locarno washrooms (I'm not great at working out kilometres, but I can always be counted on to nail every washroom on any given route). My guess is that I did a little more than 28 km in total (I followed directions without any problem on the way back). Time at fire hydrant was 2:54.

A HUGE thank you is due to all concerned. I had a terrific run and enjoyed myself immensely. This was my first Fat Ass event, but it certainly won't be my last. Until now, I've been exclusively a road runner (although, I swear, I've never attempted to harm Bugs Bunny). That's all behind me now (along with my fat ass). Today's run combined the best parts of solo long training runs and marathons, leaving behind all the less desirable bits like, on the one hand, changing your mind about the route in mid-run and ending up miles from home without a quarter and, on the other hand, watching everyone you thought was slower than you pass you as your legs turn to lead in the last few miles . . .

Next year, I'll try to do the full 50 km. I love running long distances, but I've always been intimidated by groups. Not this one, though. The people I chatted to on the way out seem to share my view that the point really is the distance, not the time. If I can't squeeze enough miles in during the preceding months, I'll do 25 km, but I'll run to the half way point and make arrangements to get home from there. I really missed the company on the way home this time!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. That was a great way to start the New Year.

Best,

Jane

Ean Jackson's picture

Dear Jane...

Sorry to hear there was nobody around when you kissed the fire hydrant. It is an odd thing to do when nobody is watching... odder still if someone you don't know is watching. (Pls see my event summary above about what is normal. I think you're normal.)

It's hard being normal sometimes. I got slapped for saying, "Hey you fat-asses" to a pair of women running on the trails in Stan Park near the finish a couple of years ago. I've also received dirty looks from folks yesterday who thought I was on crack for being able to run 50K on NY day with a hangover.

'Hope to see you back next year. Check out the FAQ section for answers to frequently-asked questions such as "Where do I turn around if I want to run 25K?"

If you can't wait that long to get back on the trails, Pure Foolishness is in a couple of weeks and the Run for the Haggis the week after.  Is it normal to try and run after a haggis even if you don't know what one looks like?

Happy New Year!

Normal at last . . .

Wow! This just keeps getting better; after all these years, people who think I'm normal (mind you, as the saying goes, the only people who think you're normal are the ones who don't know you very well . . .).Haggis sounds . . . well, revolting, but I'm game (as it may well be--who can say?) to try outrunning one. Thanks again. Brilliant run and wonderful collective sense of humour. Who could ask for anything more?Jane

Glad you enjoyed yourself.  I am always amazed at all the positive energy during this run!

Happy Running, Happy New Year!

Thanks again to Ean and Sibylle and the aid station hosts for another fab NY Fat Ass run, great as ever and can't think of a better way to start off the New Year! And the weather gods were certainly shinning on us :)

Ellie Rocks

Congrats to an amazing run, Ellie.  You looked so strong out there and sure made Gary run for his money ;-)  He says he had a hard time keeping up with you and your "yapping".  And Gary isn't know to be the quiet kind, hahaha!

I think you are going to kick some serious butt this year!
garobbins's picture

Ellie Does Rock!!

Ellie kicked my ass out there and it was everything I had in me to stick with her. I don't think I referred to her talk as "yapping", it was more along the lines of not being able to believe how fresh she looked from start to finish!

I think Ellie will really make a name for herself on the running scene this summer. I know she has me training harder already!!

Congrats to all who participated, and thanks again to Ean and Sibylle for putting on such a great event!!

 Happy New Yearl!!

GR

Sibylle's picture

Not sure exactly what you

Not sure exactly what you said.  Though it was "yapping" in a friendly, surprised by the energy kind of way ;-)  But maybe you worded it different.  I was pretty zoned out when you were over after the run...

gingerbreadman

Once there was a gingerbread man,
Baking in a gingerbread pan.
Raisin eyes and a cherry nose,
Trimmed right down to his fingers and toes.
A gingerbread man in a gingerbread pan!

Here's the old woman who made him so sweet,
A treat for her and her husband to eat,
She made him with flour and sugar and eggs,
She gave him a face and two arms and two legs.
A gingerbread man in a gingerbread pan!

Now open the oven to see if he's done,
This gingerbread man, he knows how to run.
Out of the oven and onto the floor,
Now run away out the kitchen door.
The gingerbread man, he's out of the pan!

Now chase him old woman, now chase him old man
Chase him, yes chase him as fast as you can!
Through the garden and out the gate,
Catch him right now, before it's too late.
The gingerbread man, he's out of the pan!

Along came a cow who wanted a treat
And the gingerbread man, he looked good to eat
Run, run, as fast as you can
You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man
I'm the gingerbread man and I'm out of the pan!

Along came a horse who wanted a snack
But the gingerbread man, he never looked back
Run, run, as fast as you can
You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man
I'm the gingerbread man and I'm out of the pan!

Along came a farmer who wanted a treat
And the gingerbread man, he looked good to eat
Run, run, as fast as you can
You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man
I'm the gingerbread man and I'm out of the pan!

Along came a dog who wanted a snack
But the gingerbread man, he never looked back
Run, run, as fast as you can
You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man
I'm the gingerbread man and I'm out of the pan!

Along came a hog who wanted a treat
And the gingerbread man, he looked good to eat
Run, run, as fast as you can
You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man
I'm the gingerbread man and I'm out of the pan!

Along came a fox who wanted a treat,
And this gingerbread man, he looked good to eat.
Jump on my back, my gingerbread pet,
And we'll cross the river, so you won't get wet
Mr. Gingerbread man, who's out of the pan!

There was no place to go, there was no place to run
And a ride on the river could be lots of fun!
So off with the fox did Gingerbread go
And what happened next, you already know
To the gingerbread man, who's out of the pan

That sly old fox had a de-lic-ious treat
And the old man and woman had nothing to eat
Not a bite was left for the cow or the dog,
The horse or the farmer or hungry old hog
There's no gingerbread man in or out of the pan!

So let us go home and get out the pan
And we'll make ourselves a new gingerbread man!
And when he is eaten, we'll make us some more
But this time we'll be certain to lock the back door!
A new gingerbread man, in a gingerbread pan!
