Location:
Burnaby Lake Regional Park
Possibly the craziest ultra of the year is almost here. I have 100 hours to run 100 miles and drink 100 beers in a virtual event we call the Triple Century!
COURSE: Cottonwood Trail (2.6km) + Brunette Headwaters Trail (1.8km) + Avalon Trail (0.8km) + Southshore Trail (3.4km) + Pavilion Trail (2.4km) = 11 km
My strategy is to run as many miles as I can on the first day and drink beer immediately after spreading the remaining miles and beer over the next 76 hours. I'll be running loops around Burnaby Lake which is 11km per loop. I'd like to run about 9-11 laps (99-121km) and would be grateful for any company who would join me for a lap or six .
Please note that this is a solo event, not a relay...you can't drink my beers while I run.
There is no fee and you don't need to be a member of Club Fat Ass to participate in a Flash event, however whining is not allowed. You are responsible for your own well being and safety and should be self sufficient.
Please read the Release of All Claims. By participating in this event you agree to the terms of the Release of All Claims.

The dream is over.
Sunday was a write-off, had zero desire to run. Did drink another 10 beers so that's 58 miles and 40 beers as of 12:02pm. I actually started at 9am on Thursday so I have 1 hour to run 42 miles and drink 60 beers. Anyone wanna make a bet?
Finished
Dude!
Ya done good, man! ...especially considering the epic conditions.
Unless you are some twisted alpinist looking for full-Scottish-conditions, you have shown some decent drive, strong will, & dose of stubborn ultra-ness. If anything, you finally showed some common sense...now go finish those beers!
As far as my "attempt" went... I consumed 36 beer, 3 bottles of wine (the good stuff), 6 martinis. I ran ZERO miles (0 km for the metrically inclined). Congrats Baldwin!
You gave it your best shot
Congrats for your perseverance! There is always a next time ;-)
Are we going to see you on New Years Day?
Hats Off
I ran this yesterday about 3 ... WITH snowshoes (and my faithful canine companion Sam). It took an hour and twenty five minutes to get around ... was sloppy, messy and there many arguments with Sam who insisted on riding the back of my snowshoes. (border collies are NOT unintelligent)
Baldwin, you have my utmost admiration as after the one lap I decided to wring out my shoes and head home.
Good luck and see you New Years!
Sunday 28th?
Let me answer your questions...
Nope. Nope. If she was trying to tell me something, I wasn't interested in hearing it. I have enough voices in my head as it is.
Updates
So it's like Day 3, almost 60 hours into this and I've run about 58 miles so far,but only have finished 27 beers. So it's fairly obvious that I can't catch up in my drinking but maybe I can make some interesting patterns into the snow. The worst part is the way my CFA shirt smells, cause I wear it when I run and I can smell the alcohol burning off which is of course passing through the shirt. And I'm not washing it, so there, Sibyelle!
Boxing Day Breath
Yo Baldwin,
I was thinking of driving over with my snowshoes, tire chains and some Christmas ale. Now snowing and looks like another big dump on the way, tho. Love ya, buddy, but I think I'll sit here in front of a nice warm fire and think warm thoughts of you.
PS Better pick up the pace a bit, bro!
Day One
28 miles, 13 beers. Mostly everyone I know has dropped out or didn't even bother to start. I guess I'm just stubborn.
That's all the trails for today.
That was a tough run this morning. I started at 9am rather than 8am and ended up backing in the parking lot because I wasnt confident about leaving my car. I was the only one there. Took cottonwood trail and saw Matt, Carrie and Sharon as they were snowshoeing as well. Matt ran with me to the Nature House and we started to notice how bad the trail was. Either deep snow or branches heavy with snow blocked the path and made the running less than ideal. I got poked in the eye several times as I was trying to navigate between the branches. Getting to the Cariboo Dam took 45 minutes, I knew I was not going to be setting any speed records today. The section after the dam was much worse, more trees were down. Matt had already turned around as he had Xmas plans. The trail to South Shore was virtually untouched and I met a lot of resistance, as I started to posthole. Then I was on South Shore. It was untouched. It was very demoralizing as I kept seeing downed tree after downed tree. I kept myself engaged by grabbing branches and seeing how much snow I could shake off, but it was very tough going. After what seemed like an endless trail,I finally made it to the BBY lake sports complex and slogged through knee deep snow for another mile. I made it to my car and checked the watch, 7 miles, 2 hours. I would repeat this scenario 3 times,so 21 miles for 7 hours. 1 hour was for food and liquid refreshment. And I have to do this for 3 more days?!? Oh, almost forgot. I'm working on my 8th beer. This is gonna be rough.
More snow
Running indoors right now
I'm on the treadmill (boo, hiss) because I have Boxing Day Brunch with the family later this morning and I'm hoping Scope covers the nasty beer breath. I'll try and make it to the Burnaby Lake in the afternoon.
I have a fan club?!? When did this happen?
Fan Club
Gotta be inventive...;-)
Slight delay,sorry
It's taking a little more time am than I thought, getting out with the recent snowfall. Essentially my 100 hours starts when I begin running and perhaps 8am was a little ambitious. Oh,well.
It has begun...
Well, not for me, that's 14 hours away! But for one Colorado Hasher who completed Hardrock and DNF'd Leadville this year has started on his quest for immortality: Brownie!
Check out his progress at : http://pittbrownie.blogspot.com/
Well, gotta go make PB and raisin bread sandwiches.
All I want for Xmas are snowshoes!
The trails around Burnaby Lake are somewhat runnable, hopefully with more people walking and x-country skiing, the path will be more packed down. Last night I ran from Braid Station in New West to Sperling/Burnaby Lk Station on an 8km run that took 45 minutes longer than that same run Saturday morning. Running through knee deep fresh powder was tough as I had to work twice as hard to run as half as fast. The parking lot at Bby Lake is still a mess. There's still no construction on Eagle Creek Bridge so that's a good sign.
Watch for Eagle Creek Bridge Closure
Hey Baldwin, I ran this today and found that the Eagle Creek (Piper Spit by the Nature House) bridge is going to be down for construction of a new one. It is still open but the many signs around the lake just say late December.
If they take the old bridge down pre-Christmas, you can't access Brunette Headwaters trail without looping back up Piper and doing a section on the road (Or hurdling the ditch which is always a good time).
Anyway, just thought I'd give you a heads up. Hope to see you out there but am negotiating with my wife as to Christmas running.
Happy Holidays!
Detour?
Thanks, Dave. I did see that sign and my hope is that with all the recent snow on the trails that bridge repair will not take place until post xmas. Besides, who wants to work on Xmas? If the bridge is out, then I will simply (simply,ha!) run counter clockwise starting from the north end of the Sports Complex parking lot onto the Pavilion Trail, South Shore, Avalon, Brunette Headwaters and turn around at the Eagle Creek bridge, making it a 16.8km out 'n back. Yikes, that's 10.5 miles per loop. (Gilles, run this 3 times and get a 50k!) This could get ugly quick. My biggest worry is getting access to supplies (clothes, water, food) without having to resort to the Donner Party mode of survival.
Thursday's schedule
I'm going to attempt to run as many laps of Burnaby Lake as possible on the Thursday starting at 8:00am. I may celebrate each lap with a cold BEvERage. Each lap is 11km, I would like to run at least 9 laps. Each lap takes me about 1:05 to do, but the pace may be slower due to each successive lap and winter conditions including but not limited to windchill, snow, ice, frostbite, hallucinations and stock market collapse.
100km = 62 miles, 38 miles left for the remaining 88 hours. I may be running these on the (ugh) treadmill, depending on how I feel in the morning.
So Thursday will be from 8:00am to 8:00pm, that gives me 12 hours to run a 100km, then back to my place (I may need a driver) to defrost. Hopefully our hottub will be working again, if not, I will be warming up in the sauna/steambath.
It'll be great to see anybody on the trails. Hopefully it won't be a white Xmas.
1/3 of that event sounds
Still count as an ultra
Updates may be dicey.
I don't know if I would have internet access at Bby Lake. I don't know if my fingers would still work after multiple loops. It may be more fun to show up on the 2nd day to see the cumulative effects of excessive miles and drinks. That being said, if you show up around 12pm Thursday and run with me till 4:30pm for 4 times around (4 laps = 44km), you'd get your ultra distance and still be in time for Xmas Dinner. How'sthat sound?
Last Lap?
I'd love to run a lap with you... for no other reason than to understand, "Why?"
I guess I'd have to rent a HazMat suit if it were the last lap 'cause I'm sure to get something nasty on me.
