Flash - Hyson's Hiatus

25 Apr 2009 04:00
26 Apr 2009 16:00
Location:
Panorama Park, Deep Cove

What: A 160 km aka 100 miler on the Baden Powell Trail between Deep Cove and St Andrews Rd (the road crossing before the hydro substation at Millstream/Craigmohr).

Why: Well, last year I threw myself a 100 miler birthday party to celebrate my 37th and we had a great time with lots of support from fellow FA’ers.  This year the tradition will continue but will now be called Hyson's Hiatus.  The reason...I am sidelined with an achilles injury that will likely keep me on the sidelines, so it is my turn to support the fools who have unfinished business on the course and anyone else who joins in the festivities.

Who: Anyone looking to spend a couple of days enjoying all the BP has to offer, you can expect to see the Fools out to finish their business on the course. Don't let the distance keep you away, we are going to be out there for a long time and welcome the company of our fellow FA'ers.

Where: Meet at Panorama Park in Deep Cove, North Vancouver, BC

When: Saturday, April 25th, 2009 at 4:00 am

Route: The Hyson's Hiatus course will consist of three out and backs from Deep Cove to St Andrews Rd (the road crossing before the hydro substation at Millstream/Craigmohr)

Climbing: There will be lots of up with an equal amount of down.

Aid: Be prepared to be self-sufficient. There should be water at Deep Cove, Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge washrooms, and Grouse Mountain washrooms. Of course we will also have access to our vehicles when we return to Deep Cove at the end of each loop. Since it is a birthday party you can expect birthday cake or a reasonable trail facsimile at random points throughout the run.

Schedule: We'll start at 4:00 am with a rousing chorus of happy birthday and the traditional blowing out of the candles and then we'll be off into the early morning. I will need to confer with the Fools to figure out what might be an appropriate pace and will post a detailed schedule closer to the date. I suspect that we'll be out on the trail until early afternoon on the 26th in time for the post run beer and lunch.

Entry: There is no fee and you don't need to be a member of Club Fat Ass to participate in a Flash event, however whining is not allowed. No registration is required but please indicate your participation and when you expect to join in the fun via the comment form below. You are responsible for your own well being and safety and should be self sufficient. Please read the Release of All Claims. By participating in this event you agree to the terms of the Release of All Claims

Congrats to All

Karl, you're such a stud.  It seems like only yesterday that I could say with confidence, "I can kick that guy's butt!"  Those were the good old days, eh?

Chad, I was on hiatus for this year as well.  Been skiing and riding the bike, so hopefully when the calf heals my hiatus will also come to an end.

Stud???

Gelded is how I've been feeling the last couple of days.

It was always an honour to be be beaten by you Ean.  You will do it again.  Hopefully before it has to be a wheelchair race.

And this concludes....

Congratulations to Karl on the new CR of 32:00 hours. Thanks to everyone who came out to the party this past weekend, I hope that you had fun.

I am hoping to bring back the Hijinks next year and that there will be no need for a Hiatus.

Official time: 32:02

Thanks Chad,

My official time was 32:02.  As far as a course record goes it's a very soft one that will certainly fall next year when you are healthy.

I found out last night that Lorie and Barry were at Deep Cove from 9 AM until 3 PM waiting for the finishers.  They even had a finisher's award to hand out.  That, the pacing from Kirsten and you, as well as the encouragement from everyone I met on the course is really heartwarming and much appreciated.  It's enough to make you misty eyed.

Thanks

Thank you to Chad and Kirsten for pacing me through some of the tougher sections Hyson’s Hiatus.  Chad met me at Mountain Highway on the second return trip to Deep Cove.  It was just starting to get dark and I was getting sleepy.  I was still moving fairly well, but was starting to slow. It’s great to have company in the dark when the brain is getting fuzzy and the risk of a wrong turn increases.  On the outbound from Deep Cove I was struggling badly and no amount of effort on Chad’s part could make me go any faster.  Chad’s Achilles was starting to give him problems so he stopped when we got back to Mountain Highway.  Hopefully the Achilles will respond to some therapy and he will be ready for the Western States and other 100-mile races on his schedule this summer.
It was a bit before 4 AM when I left Chad and I got progressively slower.  The section between Skyline Drive and the bottom of the Grouse Grind is fairly technical and does not seem to have as many triangular Baden Powell markers as it does going east.  I missed a couple of turns because of keeping my head down to watch my footing in the beams of the flashlights.  After that I made more of an effort to look for BP signs and had to make frequent stops to look back for the eastbound ones when I hadn’t seen any in front for a while.  That, of course, slowed the pace even more.  By the time I reached the bottom of the Grouse Grind it finally became light enough to run without the flashlights.  Chad had driven over to Grouse to wait for me and make sure I came through OK.  Presumably that was to launch a recovery operation in case I didn’t.  Based on my deteriorating pace we estimated that I would finish sometime between 1:30 and 2 PM.  Chad left to go home for some well earned sleep and I continued to the turnaround.
On the way back up Nancy Greene Way a fancy silver Mercedes pulled up to the curb and the person inside started waving at me.  Having just seen two people in a parked car turn and speak to each other, then realizing they were head rests, it took a second to realize that it was Kirsten coming to do some pacing.  She drove back up to where my van was parked and greeted me with some tasty chocolate birthday cake (you left too soon Chad).  The daylight was starting to revive me and with an extra long stop at the van to refuel I was feeling quite a bit better.  We set out at about 7 AM for the final stretch back to Deep Cove. Kirsten’s pacing was up to the high standard set by Chad.  She stayed far enough ahead to pull me along, but kept an eye on me so she could slow down a bit when I was lagging.  By the time we got to the top of the long climb out of the Grouse Skyride area I was feeling pretty good.  We maintained a fairly decent pace until the Seymour Grind where I struggled a bit again.  After that it was a fairly easy cruise to Deep Cove where we were met with the thundering applause of absolutely no one.  It was just after noon and 90 minutes before the estimated finish time.  A phone call to Lorraine got us a ride to the Raven Pub for some welcome and long fantasized for refreshments.

Thanks also to Chihping Fu.  Chihping was in town on a business trip from San Francisco.  He magically appeared at the bottom of the Skyride with muffins and other goodies for the five runners.  The muffins really hit the spot.  The videos he took are great.  Fortunately they were taken at about halfway through the first loop where everyone was still feeling good.  Watching the one of the climbing up from Grouse makes me think: “well, that doesn’t look so bad”.

This 100 miler is tougher than most others I’ve done.  I don’t know the total elevation change, but the general steepness of the climbs and the height of the stairs really suck the life out of the legs.

Happy Birthday Chad!  I hope you don’t have another one until next year; I don’t want to do this run again until at least then.

Congrats to Karl's 32hr finish and my Video Clips

First with my congratulations to Karl's heroic 32 hr finish and other brave souls coming for the challenge - Gilles, Ryan, ???, Jessie, etc. Sorry if I forget or mispell your names.

First point five (i.e. 1.5), Happy Birthday Chad!!!

Second I uploaded the video I took when I brought some salty chips and pastry to Grouse Mountain for two hours to meet those ultrarunning friends.

I also upload my pictures at 090425a Hyson's Hiatus.

Forgot to introduce myself. I'm originally from Taiwan and have lived in USA for 15 years. I now live in San Francisco area. I came to Vancouver for a week long business trip (my first time in Canada). I was pleased to meet friends at Hyson's Hiatus on my last day in Vancouver.

I have run ultra's for 5 years with a couple of 100 miler attempts and a few finishes - 2 x RDL, 2 x TRT, 1 x BR, 1 x CC, 1 x WF. I'll do WS, HH, CC, WF, and AC this year. I always carry a camera in a race and love to capture any inspiring moments to share with my fellow ultrarunners.

Enjoy!

Chihping

Thanks Chihping

Great pictures. I'll see you in Squaw Valley soon.

Congratulations Karl - 100 miles in 32 hours!

I planned to catch up with the Fools this morning and do the final half lap in from Cleveland Dam.  I arrived just before 7, expecting to have time to drink some coffee and read the papers before anyone arrived.  To my surprise, Karl was motoring up Nancy Greene Way!  I ran with him to the finish at Deep Cove, arriving just shortly after noon.  What a strong finish!  Congratulations Karl!  Kirsten

Congratulations!

Way to go Karl - and everybody out there over the last 2 days.  Missed you all.  Still giving my achilles tendon a bit of a rest... plus, the garden was beckoning!

Day Two - Morning Update

I met up with Karl at Mountain Highway around 8:00 pm last night and though he had lost the spring from his step he was determined to finsih the run.

As Karl and I made it to the top of the Seymour Grind headed toward Deep Cove, I got a phone call from Gilles letting us know that his bid for the 100 was now done.  Rumour has it that two trail sirens, Baldwin & John, showed up at Grouse with Pizza and offers of beer and a warm bed and to Gilles that seemed much more appealing than another night on the BP.

After 7 hours, it is my hiatus afterall, I left Karl where we met up the night before at Mountain Highway.  From there, I headed for Grouse to wait for his arrival to make sure he made it through the last couple of hours of dark without incident.  He came in around 6:00 am and was a little worse for wear but determined to finish the last leg to join the esteemed ranks of the Hyson's Hijinks/Hiatus 100 mile finishers.  If everything goes according to plan, Karl expects to be back in Deep Cove between 1:30 and 2:00.

UPDATE UPDATE!!!

I called Gilles around 9 am and they were in good spirits and on track with the "foolproof schedule".

Afternoon Update

Hey Everyone...just got back from the trails, Karl is about 1.5 hours ahead of schedule, he was back at Deep Cove by 1:05 pm.  He figures that he will likely slow down on the second lap but will likely make up a little more time.  I am going to meet up with him around 8:00 pm to pace him through the night, still trying to figure out were the best place to connect with him will be so that I can leave the van overnight.

Gilles is right on schedule and moving well, he took a fall this morning on the varley trail and he said he is a bit sore in his chest when he blows snot rockets.  I believe John is going to meet Gilles at the dam on the second lap and pace him through the night.

Ryan's hip was giving him trouble so I picked him up at Lynn Valley along with Bill and Jess and gave them a ride back to Deep Cove.  Bill and Jess were moving well and only planning on doing one lap but they ran out of time so opted for the ride back.

Everyone was in good spirits enjoying the nice running weather and happy to indulge in homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Thanks, Lucinda.

Please keep us posted, especially with regards to their schedule. I might try to get my lame husband out this evening to meet up with the boys.  Who is running?

Happy birthday Chad. As for

Happy birthday Chad. As for me my business is finished with the BP. So you fools have fun. you should all get down here for a run on my 100 mile course.

100 mile course?

What are you talking about boy? Is the Bellingham 100 still on your 2009 goal list?

joining in

I think we're going to start with you folks at 4am and run one loop with you :)

Ryan Conroy's picture

I'll have to confirm but I'm most likely in...

Well my training is going like crap.  I did a 5km race just to try and get my legs going and I was only able to sustain a pace that I ran in a 10km last year when I had excessive beers at a VFAC party the night before, then spent the afternoon at a BBQ pigging out and even a couple more beers before running the race on a full belly.  I then ran faster in a 1/2 marathon later in the year.

My endurance sucks and I am signed up for the marathon as well as the Sun Run.  There is no way I'm going to pull off the marathon decently unless I build up some serious endurance fast.  What better way than to run 100 miles on the Baden-Powell the weekend before?  Actually I don't really expect this to help but I think the marathon is looking like its going to be more of a chance to get out in a big crowd with a Green Party shirt on.

I'll almost make up for all the running I've missed preparing for the election which officially starts next Tuesday in one shot!  Plus there is no way I won't get some press out of it, and any press is good press when you're the Green Party.

So unless I can pull off a 20 km tempo run on Tuesday at least reasonably close to 4:00/km on Tuesday I'm in.  And the way things have been going, I don't see that happening.

Ryan
