Flash - Quad Qruncher 80K

28 Feb 2009 07:30
Location:
Malcolm Knapp Research Forest, Maple Ridge, BC

What:  An 80K run on the Yours Truly course.

Why:  Because the Fools who brought you the Pure Foolishness runs want to practice fast walking uphill and to trash their quads with some fast downhill running.

Who:  The Fools and anyone who wants to join in the fun.

Where: Malcolm Knapp Research Forest in Maple Ridge.  Meet in the parking lot.  For some interesting information and a short history of the Forest, as well as directions for how to get there go to the Forest website:
http://www.mkrf.forestry.ubc.ca/general/index.htm

When: Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 07:30

Course:  The Quad Qruncher 80K will use the 10K loop on the Yours Truly 50K course, which consists entirely of moderate elevation changes on non-technical gravel roads.
Here is a link to the 10K loop map on Rob Lang’s Yours Truly website: http://rlyt.multiply.com/photos/album/4/YT_10K_Loop

Rick Arikado kindly provided this map and profile.
The distances are, more or less, 1K of flat heading out, 3.5K of uphill, 1K of relatively flat, 3.5K of fast downhill, and finally the 1K of flat again back to the start. Eight loops in alternating directions and you deserve to go to the Black Sheep Pub for a burger and some beers.  Maps will be provided at the start to those who advise Karl that they will be attending.

Aid:  Be prepared to be completely self-sufficient.  There is no water or other aid available.  We will have access to our vehicles at the end of each 10K loop.

Entry:  There is no fee and you don't need to be a member of Club Fat Ass to participate in a Flash event, however whining is not allowed.  No registration is required but please indicate your participation via the comment form below. You are responsible for your own well being and safety and should be self sufficient.
Please read the Release of All Claims.  By participating in this event you agree to the terms of the Release of All Claims.

Flash - Quad Qruncher 80K - Results

Snow continues to plague the Fools.  The weather Saturday was excellent, but the course conditions weren't what we had hoped for.  The first four kilometers of the clockwise loop were in good condition.  Snow completely covered the top section.  Some of the snow was quite pleasant to run on, but in other places there was 10 to 15 centimeters of fresh snow which made the going very slow.  Since the Fools are not likely to encounter much snow at the Coyote Two Moon 100 miler race just north of Los Angeles it was decided to just do up and down repeats on Road K which generally has very little traffic.  Coming back from the second repeat we encountered a large bulldozer clearing snow off the road.  It left deep tracks in the formerly very nice to run on snow and made the going very difficult.  Since we were both having a tough day we decided to return to the start, do a trip around the normal 10K loop and head for the Black Sheep Pub.  Shortly after that decision had been made we saw someone coming up the road waving at us.  One of the Fools said: "I think that's Kirsten".  The other Fool said: "Oh no, now we'll have to keep going".  There was much relief when the runner turned out to be Cheryl, who isn't mean enough to make us do the full 80K.

Arthur, Matt, Paul and Claudia decided to take a scenic tour of the park and enjoyed areas not generally encountered on the official route.

Lorie and Barry did their own version in the Kamloops area.  Here is Lorie's report:

"We had to change up our plans due to a big cat that decided to follow our
foot prints. We had planned a 5k up 2000ft climb and down repeat 8x's
but.....The cougar liked it too. We made 2 trips then headed to Kal park for
30k more. So put us in for only 50k, 7:08, 10,000ft climb, very wet feet, tons
of snow.  I want dirt under my feet...........Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg!!!"

Cracking the whip...

Karl,

Sorry I couldn't be there to crack the whip for the Fools...I think you are as ready as you could be for C2M, given the conditions you've had to contend with for training!

Kirsten

Talked to Tim about distance

Talked to Tim about distance and I'm going to give myself 18k.  My time was about 2:30.  What a very nice day, all the smiles made even the snow ok.  My thanks to Neil & Carolyn for making such a nice trail through the snow.  And my thanks to you, Karl, for reminding me what a perfect, beautiful training area I have in my own backyard.

Enjoy the sunshine and clear trails and the swimming pool at C2M!

Running the Quad Qruncher

Hi Karl,

I shall be coming with Paul Young to run, hopefully 5 loops or until 1:00 pm due to appointments later.

Do we meet at the front Entrance of Malcolm Knapps?

Arthur

Meet in the parking lot at the Malcolm Knapp entrance.

There is a link to the Forest website in the Where section of the QQ site.  Follow the directions to the entrance of the Forest.  We meet in the parking lot.

My van is now a silver Grand Caravan (ANF954).  I will leave the results sheet and some maps under the windshield wiper.

In for a few laps

I plan to come out and go around a few times.  I'll start later and time it so that I'm done about the same time you.  Any guesses as to when you will finish your eight laps?

Nine hours +

Gilles and I were 9:05 last year.  There was snow on the connector at the top of the 10 K loop which slowed us down a bit.  I expect we might be a bit slower this year.  With all the snow on the North Shore trails we haven't done much in the way of hill work.

I don't know if Chad will be running, but if he does you might want to connect with him.  He's running well right now and his speed will be much more to your liking.

Looking forward to seeing you, Cheryl, Paul and perhaps some others on Saturday.

Hello Karl,

I'm planning to do half, 40K.

Paul Young

Half a fool.

I'm planning to run a couple

I'm planning to run a couple laps but won't get there until about noon.  Probably see you on the course.  Didn't it rain on us the entire time last year?  Ahhh....good times.  Black Sheep is a great pub, you know they don't even require that you've run before they serve you.  Hey Jess, you  have fond memories this one, don't you?  See you there!
