Flash - Pure Foolishness 50K - CANCELLED

25 Jan 2009 07:00
25 Jan 2009 17:00
Location:
Deep Cove, North Vancouver, BC
What: A 50K run on the Baden Powell Trail between Deep Cove and Lynn Canyon.  Since this is a Fat Ass event you may, of course, do whatever you distance like.  Or, you could follow the Jackson model: wait until everyone is out of sight and then head off to the Raven pub.

Why: A few Fools in the club have signed up for the Coyote Two Moon 100 Mile race in March that has 28,000 feet of uphill and they really, really need to get in some distance and hill work.

Who: The Fools and anyone who wants to join in the fun.

Where: Meet at Panorama Park in Deep Cove, North Vancouver, BC

When: Sunday, January 25, 2009 at 07:00

Route: The Pure Foolishness 50K will consist of two loops on the Pure Satisfaction Course. You can read the foolproof directions at: http://www.clubfatass.com/events/puresatisfaction/course

Aid: Be prepared to be self-sufficient. There should be water at Deep Cove and at the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge washrooms. Of course we will also have access to our vehicles when we return to Deep Cove at the end of each loop.

Results: Fill in the results sheet on the windshield of Karl's light green Dodge Caravan, ANF 954, which will be parked in or near Panorama Park, or email your distance and time to Karl through the email link at the bottom of this event site.

Motto: Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool.

Entry: There is no fee and you don't need to be a member of Club Fat Ass to participate in a Flash event, however whining is not allowed. No registration is required but please indicate your participation via the comment form below. You are responsible for your own well being and safety and should be self sufficient. Please read the Release of All Claims. By participating in this event you agree to the terms of the Release of All Claims.

Pure Foolishness 50K - CANCELLED

I very much regret having to do this, but the Baden Powell trail conditions west of Mount Seymour Road are such that I don't feel comfortable running there myself, much less sending other people out there.

I did a scouting run today and found the conditions quite variable.

  • From Deep Cove to Mount Seymour Road the trail is in great shape with very minor sections of snow.
  • From Mount Seymour Road to Old Buck the trail is about 90% covered in snow, but runnable.
  • The old road from Old Buck to the top of the Seymour Grind is covered and slippery.
  • Old Buck below BP is also covered and slippery.
  • Above Hyannis Point BP is covered and slippery to where Bridle Trail comes in from the east.  Above that there are some long clear sections until the "new" bridges and boardwalks.  They are almost totally covered and there are a lot of trees fallen or leaning across them.  I turned around here.
  • Below Hyannis I fell getting from the sidewalk down the snow covered stars.  The short distance farther I went down was fairly slippery.
  • I tried to go across the pipeline bridge at the top of Riverside and ended up skiing down about ten feet on the steep section before the bridge.  The stairs were completely roped off with tape.  I didn't try to go up to the very steep section above the stairs.

So, there you have it.  Gilles and myself discussed just doing a bunch of out and backs between Deep Cove and Mount Seymour Road, but in the end decided to cancel the Pure Foolishness 50K and put on a Foolish Gerbil 50K on Sunday, January 25 at 08:00 out at Pacific Spirit Park.  We will start at the Park Centre.  Frankly, we've both seen enough of that park to last us a long time, but we need to get some miles in before the Coyote Two Moon 100 Miler in March and our trail options are very limited.

I'll post a Flash event for the Foolish Gerbil 50K tonight.

I would appreciate if you would pass this message on to anyone you know who was considering the Pure Foolishness 50K.

Wise Call

Sounds like a wise decision.  I ventured onto some lower trails in my hood today and while parts where amazingly clear, others were treacherous with ice and obstacles.

No Choice Really

We would probably do it if it was a race we'd paid money to get into.  This was just intended to be an organized training run.  Some sections are tricky enough without adding icy snow to the mix.

If we don't get some warm weather really soon the 75 K and 100 K will have to be cancelled too.  We may have to just do a bunch of out and backs between Deep Cove and Mount Seymour Road.  We really need the hills.  C2M has about 25,000 feet of elevation gain.

Trail Conditions

Thanks Gaz and Sibylle,

I'm going to check out the conditions today.  I'm most concerned about the section where the bridge is out as mentioned by Gaz, the Seymour Grind and the steep section above the stairs after crossing the Seymour River at the top of Riverside Drive.

I'll post a report ASAP.
