14 Feb 2009 23:59
Location:
Deep Cove, North Vancouver, BC

What: A 100K run on the Baden Powell Trail between Deep Cove and Lynn Canyon.  Since this is a Fat Ass event you may, of course, do whatever you distance like.

Why: A few Fools in the club have signed up for the Coyote Two Moon 100 Mile race in March that has 28,000 feet of uphill and they really, really need to get in some distance and hill work.

Who: The Fools and anyone who wants to join in the fun.

Where: Meet at Panorama Park in Deep Cove, North Vancouver, BC

When: Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 04:00

Route: The Pure Foolishness 100K will consist of four loops on the Pure Satisfaction Course. You can read the foolproof directions at: http://www.clubfatass.com/events/puresatisfaction/course

Aid: Be prepared to be self-sufficient. There should be water at Deep Cove and at the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge washrooms. Of course we will also have access to our vehicles when we return to Deep Cove at the end of each loop.

Results: Fill in the results sheet on the windshield of Karl's light green Dodge Caravan, ANF 954, which will be parked in or near Panorama Park, or email your distance and time to Karl through the email link at the bottom of this event site.

Motto: Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool.

Entry: There is no fee and you don't need to be a member of Club Fat Ass to participate in a Flash event, however whining is not allowed. No registration is required but please indicate your participation via the comment form below. You are responsible for your own well being and safety and should be self sufficient. Please read the Release of All Claims. By participating in this event you agree to the terms of the Release of All Claims.

Flash - Pure Foolishness 100K Results

Only Sylvie, Chad, Gilles and Karl showed up for the 04:00 start.  Lorie and Barry had intended to be there, but Lorie thought it started at 4 PM.  It seems that she was smoking in the girls’ room during the lesson about the 24 hour clock.

The run went well on mostly clear trails until just below the intersection of Bridal Path and Baden Powell just above Hyannis Point.  Baden Powell down to Fisherman’s Trail was mostly covered in snow with some slippery sections and quite a few downed trees.  From Fisherman’s to the top of the stairs leading down to the boardwalks in Lynn Canyon the trail was in good shape.  The stairs were icy and very slippery.  Sylvie involuntarily did a little bit of butt tobogganing on one section.  The boardwalks were covered in snow, but fairly good for running.  After that the trail became hard to follow in the dark and required some bushwhacking to get around downed trees.  Once we got to the stairs leading up to the suspension bridge the trail was clear again.  After a food break and some discussion at the bridge the group decided not to go back on the same route.  We went up to the now downed gazebo at Rice Lake and took the road at the back of the parking lot down to Fisherman’s and then followed Bridle Trail, Old Buck and Baden Powell back to Deep Cove.  It was nice to meet Jonathan and Jack the Ultra Dog just before getting to Old Buck.  The entire loop took 5:14 compared to an expected time of just over 4 hours.  Sylvie said goodbye to the Fools, who decided to go back to Old Buck to do a little hill training.  Chad did two down and up loops, Gilles and Karl one.  On returning to Deep Cove the motivation was gone and the trio retired to the Raven for some refreshments.

Lorie and Barrie did their own run up on Kelowna.  Here is some of Lorie’s report:  “We had a glorious run!!!!  It was a little cold at night.  It took us 17:40 to complete 7 loops of 15 and a bit K"s with 2,500ft gain...so put us in for 105k with 17,000ft climbing.  It was great training. I  wish we did one more loop to get closer to 20 hours.  We ran in fresh snow in the afternoon and it snowed lightly for the last loop.  The lights all around from the city were beautiful.  We even saw some of the northern lights.  Man, even the pulp mill looks pretty all lit up.  Lots of deer and one coyote.”

Talked Out of It

Phew... I called in to Sylvie around 10:30 (am) to see where I might join in on the fun.  She recommended I stay at home and hit my head with a hammer.  I took her advice.  Head is still a bit sore!

See you bright and early tomorrow...

Well I guess it won't be bright but it will be early, looking forward to a great day/night.  See you at 4:00.

Hoping to join you -- How Might I Find You?

No 100K at 4:00am on my Valentine's Day social calendar, but I'd love to join you fools for a while.  Is there someone on the crew I might call to get a rough idea of where you are at a particular time?

I did a run on the BP between Mosquito Creek and Grouse today.  I was surprised how clear of snow it was.

Good luck with reaching your goal.  100K is a long way!

Schedule

I don't know if there will be a crew, I'm planning to be self sufficient.
Gilles has estimated the times that we will be starting each loop at Deep Cove:
4:00 am first loop
8:30 am second loop
1:30 pm third loop
7:00 pm last loop
It will probably take a bit longer outbound than inbound.
The usual disclaimer about the accuracy of these times applies of course.

I'll be there

I will be there for a loop.  However, I will start at daybreak (7-8 a.m.), run a lap, and shout out some encouragement when I meet you on the path.  Good luck in California at the C2M!

Alternate Route

The Pure Foolishness 100K is intended to be a training run for those doing the Coyote Two Moon 100 Mile run in March.  C2M has very few technical sections.  To make the PF100K course more comparable to C2M an alternate route will be to skip the Seymour Grind section and use Old Buck and Bridle Path instead.  Please check out the course description for Pure Satisfaction (see link in Route section of PF100K).  The trail at the intersection listed at the time 9:52 is Old Buck.  Go left (down) as if you are continuing on the Baden Powell trail.  Instead of going across the bridge when the trail swings right take the wide trail on the left that goes down.  This is the continuation of Old Buck.  Follow Old Buck down for approximately one kilometer.  Watch for Bridle Path trail gate on the right.  Follow Bridle Path west for approximately two kilometers until it meets the Baden Powell trail.  Go left here.  From this point on the route follows Baden Powell to Lynn Canyon.

This alternate route is slightly longer than the regular route, so there should be no complaints about being cheated for distance.
