Location:
Pacific Spirit Park, Vancouver BC
What:
A mid-week trail run, in the evening, in a group. Expect mud, rain, cold temperatures, total darkness, slippery roots and stairs.
Possibility of magnificent views of the ocean, north shore mountains, and downtown Vancouver.
Why:
Getting your mid-week, post-work, winter-time trail run done is less miserable with company. Even if you already know all (and bored of) the trails in Pacific Spirit, I promise you’ll see something new, and besides everything is different in the dark.
When:
Wednesday, January 12, at 6pm in the evening.
Where:
Meet at the entrance to Jericho Park East, at the end of Point Grey Road under the weeping willow.
Route:
Trails in and around Jericho/Locarno/Spanish beach seawall and the Pacific Spirit Park. ~10 km, 50-70 minutes.
Start at Jericho beach -> Locarno beach -> Spanish Banks -> left and up Spanish trail -> right to Chancellor trail -> right and down Pioneer trail -> left to Admirality -> left and up East Canyon trail -> right and down West canyon trail -> right to Admirality trail (stairs down, stairs up) -> left and down Spanish trail -> back to the start along the seawall path of Spanish/Locarno/Jericho beaches. Park route map is available here.
The Plan:
This is a group run, led by me. I know these trails fairly well.
We’ll run by the pace of the slowest in our group, and I’ll do my best to keep everyone together and safe.
Is This Run For Me?
You should be comfortable with trail running, and with running in the dark.
Mostly these are not very technical trails, and we are in the middle of the city; however it will be dark, cold, wet, muddy, and slippery. You may fall. You may also have a lot of fun.
Don’t forget:
- A good strong headlamp and/or flashlight
- A cellphone
Entry: There is no fee and you don't need to be a member of Club Fat Ass to participate in a Flash event, however whining is not allowed. Run report
Ray, Alex, Mia the ultra dog, and myself enjoyed a beautiful dry evening run along the ocean and on the snowy (but mostly muddy) trails.
The air was crisp but not too cold, we experienced magnificent views of the north shore and downtown lights, while Mia kept us safe from being attacked by the infamous Jericho rabbits.
After about an hour's run and ~9 km we ended where we started under the weeping willow, to a hot home-made vegetable soup and buns.

Awesome Run in the UEL, could
Awesome Run in the UEL, could see the north shore lights as we ran through the trees. Thanks for setting up the run and the finshers soup was a bonus.
I'm there
I'll be there. I have a physio appointment at 5, but I'll make it earlier or move it to a different day. It's hard to find people to go night running with.

would like to join but later is better for me
Sound great Ran, though an 8pm start would work for me so I can't commit to this yet due to the earlier 6pm start. will let you know whether I can join at that earlier time.
oh!
Very nice! Too bad I'll miss it...GVOC orienteering nights are Wednesday... Keep the night runs coming... Along a similar vein, I was considering posting a night run for Burnaby mountain; similarly the non-technical trails can get repetitious by day, but are very enjoyable by night/headlamp...
Great Flash, Ran. Like
Great Flash, Ran. Like Rachel, I have been plotting to post a midweek night run (after having so much fun on the St. Nikolaus Run). I imposed a non running month, though, wearing my brace and being very conservative to heal my ankle ligament. Already faltering and eyeing the fools run on the 22nd... Arrgh!
