Location:
The Yellow Beacon, North Vancouver, BC Canada
What: A short group run (about 10km) in celebration of St. Nikolaus Day on the 6th of December. Make sure to bring a flash light as we'll be running in the trails in the dark. After the run we'll have a brief get together with Gluehwein. Please car pool and/or have a designated driver.
Where: We'll meet at the Yellow Beacon in North Vancouver. If you do not know this secret location, please send me a note.
Background: The tradition of Saint Nicholas Day, usually on 6 December, is a festival for children in many countries in Europe related to surviving legends of the saint, and particularly his reputation as a bringer of gifts. The American Santa Claus, as well as the Anglo-Canadian and British Father Christmas, derive from these legends. "Santa Claus" is itself derived from the Dutch Sinterklaas. In Germany, Nikolaus is usually celebrated on a small scale. Many children put a boot called Nikolaus-Stiefel (Nikolaus boot) outside the front door on the night of 5 December to 6 December. St. Nicholas fills the boot with gifts and sweets, and at the same time checks up on the children to see if they were good, polite and helpful the last year. If they were not, they will have a tree branch (Rute) in their boots instead.
Entry: There is no fee and you don't need to be a member of Club Fat Ass to participate in a Flash event, however whining is not allowed. No registration is required but please indicate your participation via the comment form below. You are responsible for your own well being and safety and should be self sufficient.

Wunderbar!
Very nice run. True, it was a bit fresh at the start, but things warmed-up quickly as we made our way down the dark trails under a clear sky.
Our group went up Mosquito Creek, across Mount Royal and into Capilano Canyon. We paid our respects to Grandpa Capilano, crossed the pipeline bridge then took an obscure trail along the cliff-edge when we came across a group of whackos out running in the dark. Enjoyed an orgy of Christmas lights at the Suspension Bridge, then did a Christmas lights tour of Edgemont Village and several secluded residential communities before arriving at our destination in almost exactly one hour.
The gluhwein was divine, as was the crackling fireplace, Christmas cake and ginger-chocolate cookies. Thank you for a wonderful evening, Sibylle!
Couldn't have said it better
Couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks again Sibylle and Ean for the warm and generous hospitality. I had a great time!
Yes, what a great run it
Yes, what a great run it was. Our group ran to and through Eldon Park, on to the Fish Hatchery Road, braved the technical trails of Chinook (where we too met a group of whackos out running in the dark), crossed the pipeline bridge and contoured the canyon following the Coho Trail. Back on the Pipeline Trail and on neighborhood roads that were festively lit.
Geez, will this become another classic? Thanks everybody for joining me to celebrate St. Nikolaus - and thanks Pam for the idea!

Yes, it was very "hooray" indeed! Carguy (or "teaboy", aka Brendan my husband) had a fantastic intro to CFA & our particular brand of wackiness :)
I can't remember what Sibylle taught us to say as the German form of Cheers (it wasn't quite as simple as "Prost!") but if I could remember it, I would insert it here:
:)
Thanks for a wonderful night all,
'til next time!
I thought I taught you how to
I thought I taught you how to say Merry Christmas in German = Frohe Weihnachten. Prost is perfect to toast, although, I don't recall that you actually toast with Gluehwein - Pam, any clue?
Glühwein had gone to my head!
Ha ha I had no idea that's what you were teaching us to say! Frohe Weihnachten, yay :)

Any recommendations?
Hi! This will be my first night run and my first winter run. Any recommendations on what i should wear? other than the headlamp?
Thanks! Jackie
Sounds like it might be a
Sounds like it might be a cold night, so dress warm and in layers. I'll run in my tights, favorite Club Fat Ass long sleeve shirt and a winter running jacket. Might even add on thin layer, ie, my icebreaker shirt. Fleece headband and gloves. I always have warm feet when I run, so my normal socks, will be enough for me.
