Location:
Pacific Spirit Park, Vancouver, BC
What:  A twenty-four hour run on the trails in Pacific Spirit Park.

Why:  Because Chad will running the HURT 100 Mile Race in Hawaii at about the same time and the Fools stuck at home don't want him to get too far ahead in the training.

Who:
The Fools and anyone who wants to join in the fun.

Where:  Gilles and Karl will be starting at 09:00 at the big information board at the corner of Camosun, 41st Ave and S.W. Marine Dr. because we don't want to leave a car in the Park Centre parking lot overnight.  Those planning to do a custom run may want to start at the Park Centre on Sixteenth Avenue.  Note that the park and washrooms are open from 09:00 to 17:00.

Route:
The course will consist of a 10 kilometer loop plus a short 1.5 K loop which will be done near the end of the twenty-four hours when there is not enough time left to do the 10 K loop again. The 10 K loop is on the south side of Sixteenth Avenue and requires crossing the road.  Don't forget to look both ways, just like your mommy taught you.

Course Description:

The # refers to the trail numbers as shown on the official park map available at the Park Centre.

DIRECTIONS FOR THE 10K LOOP: Start and Finish is at the parking lot entrance.

  • Go north through the back of the parking lot onto #2, Cleveland to #10, Heron.
  • Left onto Heron to #21, Salish.
  • Left again onto Salish and across 16th to the continuation of Salish.  Stay on Salish until you reach #12, Imperial trail.
  • Left on Imperial to #22, Sasamat.
  • Right on Sasamat to junction of #19, St. Georges.
  • Right on St. Georges to Camosun Street.
  • Right on Camosun Street, just after the school on your right you will see a trail entrance, take that trail to the big information board at the corner of Camosun, 41st Ave and S.W. Marine Dr.
  • Take the SW Marine trail that parallels the highway.  After about .75 K you will come to a split in the trail.
  • Go right on #3 Clinton for a very short distance and take the first left onto the trail that goes into the forest.
  • This is trail #21, Salish.
  • Follow Salish, Heron and Cleveland all the way back to the Park Center.
  • Do it again and again and....  Reverse directions if you want a change of scenery.

DIRECTIONS FOR THE 1.5K LOOP:  Start and Finish is the gate at the parking lot entrance.

  • Go north again on #2, Cleveland trail. Continue past #10 and then left on #13, Lily of the Valley. This is about halfway between 16th and 10th.
  • This will quickly take you back to #21, Salish. Go left. Shortly after you will encounter #10, Heron.
  • Left onto Heron. This will take you back to #2, Cleveland.
  • Right on Cleveland to the Park Center. Once again make sure to circle to the entrance of the parking lot for a full 1.5k.

Lap Counting:  You are responsible for counting your own loops.  If you can't count then this run is probably not for you.

Results:  If you want to be included in the results please email your name, distance or loops and time to Karl's contact address below.  Or you can fill in the sheet which will be under the windshield wiper of Karl's light green Dodge Caravan licence ANF 954 which will be parked at the corner of Camosun, 41st Ave and S.W. Marine Dr.

Climbing:  Minor elevation changes.

Aid:
Be prepared to be self-sufficient. There will be water at the Park Centre washrooms.  Of course we will also have access to our vehicles at the end of each loop.

Motto
:  Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool.

Thanks to the fools

Hi guys,

\

Thanks for organizing this event! I did my three loops and can't figure how you guys manage to run 24 hrs... that's something to admire. I Hope one day I can get the level of fitness/training to do a 100-miler, Perhaps your true dedication and training is my inspiration that hopefully one day will be my motivation. Then, If I finish one of those challenging ultras, I'll have the privilege to be called "a fool". Cheers and thanks again, Claudia

Being a fool

"I hope one day I can...do a 100-miler" You may be farther along than you think Claudia.

Gilles and Karl,

Paul Young and Arthur Gee would like to do a Custom Run.  We shall start at 0600 and finish about 11:30 am or thereabouts.  we shall see you about -0900 or we can sign in on your car.  Please indicate what car windsheild it will be on, What type of car, and make.  We may have done 3 loops by about 0920....sooner, I hope but that time should be realistic.

See you in passing, anyways.

Back from Orlando last night....actually, early Friday monring, about 0130 hours.

Arthur

Still some snow...

I was on the trails today. Most of them are pretty clear, but there's still thick snow in places. Heron is completely covered; fortunately that segment is short.

I'm not up for a 24hr run, but I'll head out for my daily run in the afternoon and maybe run into some of you. I'll be wearing MM gear.

HAVE FUN!!!

Hope you all have fun!! While you guys are running around like gerbils, I will trying to take in some inaugural festivities and maybe head to the city. With the frigid weather over here, I might get a feel for what you guys go through in the cold

24 hour Gerbil

Hey Karl and Gilles! I have to teach a class in Vernon in the am. Then will be head your way. I still plan on doing 24 hours or 100 miles which ever comes first but will not start till around 2pm. Hope that's okay. Barry will be coming in with me but only doing 12hours or a 100k (needs coffee after ever 100k). See you on the trails. Lorie PS If you want anything hot (food or drink) email me tonight and place your order.

Late Start

It's a FA event Lorie, so you can do whatever the heck you want. A 2 PM start is tempting. I'm going to miss my coffee and the Saturday papers in bed tomorrow. No special food order from me thank you, I think I've got everything I need. Have a safe drive down. Karl

Fool-in-training

I'll be there for a few laps in the morning and a few more at night.  See you at 9:00!  Kirsten

some laps

I can't believe I'm going to run in circles again (I thought no way after the loops out in maple ridge last year), but I'm 99% sure I'm going to be there for 9am. I'm in serious need of mileage for orcas and I have zero motivation to do it!

Five or Six

I'll drop by to visit and run a few laps with you guys.  See you at the sign at 9:00.

Trails condition

First thing, coming from downtown it's very surprising how much snow there is up there considering it's just a few clicks away. For the most part the trails are covered with hard packed snow. Lost of small debris so traction is pretty good. With the warm week ahead I don't think snow is going to be much of an issue really. After a nasty 50k in Seattle, I'm more concerned with the weather. So far the long range forecast looks good.

doing two-three loops sometime during that 24-hour period

see you then, hopefully we don't get more snow :)
