Flash - Burnaby Mountain Down Up Run (BMDUR 1101)

21 Feb 2011 18:30
Location:
Burnaby Mountain

A week-day evening trail run, in a group. Expect ELEVATION CHANGE, cold temperatures, total darkness, and of course rain and maybe even snow -- it is Burnaby Mountain after all.
Why:
Getting your post-work day, winter-time ELEVATION CHANGE trail run is less miserable with company. + it is a lot more fun to go uphill when you can't see how far the uphill stretches!

When:
Monday, February 21st, at 6:30 pm.

Where:
The coffee tables at the deli at Nesters' in the Cornerstone Building at the East edge of SFU near the NEW Bus Exchange at the top of Burnaby Mountain at the corner of Tower Road and University High Street

Route:
It will consist of a minimum 60 minute run with approximately 300m+. Do not be surprised if we drop down via the TransCanada (E) to Barnet Highway via Cardiac Hill; or down to Gaglardi via PowerLine; or down to E. Hastings via the TransCanada trail (W).

Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area trail map is available here.

The Plan:
Meet at Nesters's, short briefing, start running in a group led by me at a comfortable pace for me -- and therefore probably extremely slow for anyone running with me. Finish at Nester's, have some coffee/treats/soup at Nester's or one of the other coffee shops in the area; possibly dinner at one of the many other restaurants in the Cornerstone complex.

Is This Run For Me?
You should be comfortable with trail running, and with running in the dark.
These are not very technical trails; however it will be dark, cold, wet, muddy, and slippery if it snows. You may also have a lot of fun. You will also get some good elevation change! Because of the extreme elevation change in some sections, particularly if we use Cardiac Hill, or go down to Barnet via from the end of Powerline via TransCanada (E) be prepared to 'walk' uphill to get back to the 'starting' point and 'finishing' point!

Don’t forget:
A good strong headlamp and a cell phone, and appropriate clothing -- particularly for when we are 'walking' uphill!

Entry:
There is no fee and you don't need to be a member of Club Fat Ass to participate in a Flash event, however whining is not allowed. No registration is required but please indicate your participation via the comment form below. You are responsible for your own well being and safety and should be self sufficient. Sorry! I was late!

After missing Saturday's run, and more regrettably, the subsequent drunken worm eating / passing out contest, I wanted to at least catch up on the night trail running.

Rachel announcement was perfect. I live near Metrotown so the plan was to run North along Willington, then take East on Hastings, the TCT up to SFU, and meet up with you guys.

But I overestimated my speed going up on the snow-covered TCT (Jackson was not there to molest me, so I had to do all the work uphill), and also had a late start, so I arrived at Nester's a bit after 6:45.

I ended up running around SFU and on the TCT, and went back down the way I came up.

It was a beautiful night on the mountain, after the clouds cleared up, around 6:00. It was much colder up there, with about 10cm of fresh snow.

The cloud cover, with the city lights, plus the snow on the ground, made the headlamp mostly unnecessary. As I passed by a couple of folks walking their dog in Centennial Park, where there is no artificial light, one said, at my brand new headlamp, with a hint of reproach: "That's a lot of light!". He was right. I turned it off.

If you crossed my path, you may have noticed the barefoot footprints that I left all over the place, courtesy of my Fivefingers. Since Ryan Conroy pointed out to me that it must freak people out to see very clearly defined footprints in the snow, I really enjoy myself. The best trick is to walk in the grass, jump on the sidewalk and leave a single well-defined footprint in the middle of it, then jump back in the grass.

Thanks Rachel.

Sorry we missed you too... and Snowy BMDUR 1101 Flash Run Report

Hi Eric, Glad you had a good run anyway -- and nice job on the extended UpDown variation.

All-in-all, considering the weather, etc., the response to the first BMDUR of the year was quite positive. (I've just finished posting the run report with a couple of photos).

Fingers (and toes) crossed for next week Feb 28th. I've posted a start time of 6:15pm -- we'll see if that works as well. If you email me/write a post on the 'announcement' for the next BMDUR flash, I can keep an eye out for you.

Hope to see you next week for BMDUR 1102!

 Oops, sorry you missed it,

Oops, sorry you missed it, Eric.  Hope Rachel and whoever else came out had fun.  LOL re your barefoot prints...

Claudia and I will be running in Capilano Canyon Wednesday night (50/50 road and trails)

Doggie - leash ...

Absolutley ok! Just be sure that your dog brings his/her doggie-leash too.

Quote from: burnaby-conservation.pdf

"Dogs on leashes are welcome at Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area and make excellent companions as you explore the park and trails. However, to ensure the area’s ecological health and your pet’s safety on the steep terrain, keep your dog on a leash, out of
streams and on the trails at all times. Remember to clean up and properly dispose of your dog’s waste."

Enthusiastically looking forward to meeting hyper-doggie!

Is it okay if a well-natured, but hyper-active dog comes along with us?
