Big Horn 100 Miler - Update on the Fools

The fools catch some ZZzs before race day

I last saw the fools last night at the 30 mile marker and probably will not be able to see them until the finish. I have loads more pictures that can be seen at

I will be updating this page regulary. The internet is a bit slow so the pictures may be slow in coming.

Karl was in the lead. He looked great and was having a really great race.

John was also looking good and was in good spirits.

Gilles always looks good but was having a bit of a rough time (mostly mentally speaking), but I think he will be able to pull through.

How cozy you all look!

Who says running 100-milers is no fun? You guys look like 3 peas in a pod. That's a mighty devious looking grin you have there, too, Karl.

Schadenfreude

Only us Germans, in my case half German, have a word that means that we can laugh at or have joy in someone else's misfortune. But in driving for 2 days, running for a day and half, winning a free pair of running shoes and a belt buckle there's no shame in DFL'ing a 100 Miler. I'm sure just finishing after feeling like crap a third of the way through is an accomplishment. I am I right in assuming Karl and John didn't need and extra pair of shoes? There are some tough fools in this club.

Free shoes for DFL?!?

That does it! I'm going to Bighorn next year!

Results

A tough 100 miler it is indeed.

Karl, had an exceptional run and finished in 28:35. Impressive for such an old man on such a difficult course.

John, started a little fast and was on his way to a sub 30 hours but the altitude and the climbing got the better of his ambitions and had to settle for a 32:44 finish. Still a very good performance for someone who didn't get anywhere near the training he wanted.

As for myself I maximized my entry fee and finished within 5 minutes to cut off in 33:55. I had a very difficult first day and wanted to drop out at 30 miles. I decided to push on and it got better. DFL, but a buckle is a buckle.

Funny thing though, Scott Jurek came down to pace someone and was some kind of guest speaker, he decided to give a pair of trail running shoes to the last male and female finisher. The winner gets a rock and I got a nice pair shoes for being DFL, who's the winner now?

Anyway, good time in the woods with the boys. It's beautiful country in Wyoming. We're now in Aspen, Colorado resting my heart at 8,600' of altitude.
