SFU is a location for the Relay for Life fundraiser for the Canadain Cancer Society this March 19th 7pm - March 20th 7am. Excitingly, I have received approval to be a "Team of One", i.e., complete the 12-hour SOLO. If anyone would like to support my efforts to fundraise for the Canadian Cancer Society through the Relay for life that would be great! If anyone also wants to fundraise and complete the event SOLO you can contact the SFURelay organizer via email, she would be excited to hear from you. And oh, this will be my first attempt at running for 12-hours! Any other takers? Did I also say, I only started doing ultras in January with CFA at the New Year's Day event?
See you at Capilano Canyon Night Run and the Spring Mountain Highway Madness if my legs can still move that weekend.
Cheers,
Rachel

Run report
Well I have to say trying to run on a 150m+ squarish track for 12 hours overnight is a challenge. I am happy to say though, I managed to stay on my feet and complete 551 laps (+/-) a few due to small miscounts yielding an approximate minumum of 82.650km over the 12 hour period -- representing for me the longest amount of time attempted running (I say attempted because we all know we've got to walk some of the time) and the longest distance 'run' to date. Thank goodness for going over 80km, I would have been a bit disappointed if I hadn't managed 80km since I had hit that target in January at Calico Racing's Running From an Angel at Lake Mead -- and of course I wanted to go LONGER and go FARTHER. Well, I also went SLOWER too...
But it was wonderful...I got to do this as a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, at the 2nd Relay for Life at SFU. The SFU Relay for Life organizers were absolutely terrific and supportive. They let me be their first ever "Team of One", and with that as of the day of the event, I managed to be their top "individual" fundariser and their third ranked "team" fundraiser. But of course I didn't do this alone, I did it with the support of many -- because nothing is done alone. Thanks to my many friends and colleagues who contributed! and to the people who met me the night of the event and decided they also wanted to further show their support for my fundraising attempt by contributing to the money I raised.
The other teams participating in the event raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society were also terrific! Teams made up primarily of SFU undergraduate students and their friends, their energy and enthusiasm buouyant! It was wonderful to chat with them and to be encouraged by them, and to encourage them and cheer them in return.
The event finished 3.5 hours before the spring equinox -- the moment many people celebrate Noruz (the start of the new year). I slept through that moment. But that's ok, I had already made all my 'happy noruz' telephone calls, I had just finished something more important...
Cancer is one of many conditions that touches many families. To make a contribution to aiding in the prevention and treatment of cancers, to make a contribution to improving support for families affected by cancer is something, to be able to participate in the SFU Relay for Life...made my day!
And oh, after resting for 24 hours, my legs did feel good enough to make it to Mountain Highway Madness today -- although i have to confess I made it a custom event and turned around at the slush at 755m elevation.
Cheers!
Congratulations, Rachel.
Congratulations, Rachel. You are amazing. What's next?
Nice write-up, too.
Wow, when you said you've
Wow, when you said you've been lazy with training I didn't realize what you are really up to! Well, I am looking forward to catching up with you at the Capilano Night Run and at the MHM the following weekend.
