First bear of the year

Saw my first black bear of the season and thought it deserved an entry.  I was running on one of my favourite trails out of Pemberton and came across a young juvenile bear.  It (I didn't think it appropriate to determine gender)as walking up the trail as I was headed down.  We eyed each other up and he decided I was more imposing/impressive?!  It may have helped that I was dressed in black as well.

I guess this means I will start paying more attention and lower the volume on my ipod.  It won't be long before the moms and tots are out as well and the mums are less likely to back off with young by their sides.  There is the distinct chance that the young cats (yes we have cougars around here) will be roaming looking for play toys to bat with their paws as well.  It might be time I started borrowing a dog again.

Haven't seen any on the

Haven't seen any on the trails or on our street so far this spring. I think they were hibernating longer than usual because of the deep snow pack and cold temps.  Seems like most neighbors now keep their garbage bins in the garage until the morning of collection.  Because we are bordering a greenbelt/stream, the garbage guys come first to our street.... So, hopefully no garbage bears this year...and yes, time to be bear aware on those trails again.  The bears must be hungry after this long winter.

Kinda cool

that we have bears in our back yards, isn't it?  Haven't run far enough to see monleys like Gilles, but I do see a see lots of bears up in the woods and quite a few on my street.  'Never been hassled.  Then again, I've been told I have a face that could scare a bear off...

Monkeys

I saw a few running on the Baden Powell trail last weekend.
