Time to get back into it - training versus time.

Well it is time when I realize that I should start training in earnest. Have a bit of a knee issue but it seems to be coming along (with lots of icing). But I am sure like a lot of you my biggest issue is the constant balancing act of finding the balance between family/career/training. Any suggestions or examples of how you deal with it? A Sign Of The Times...

As a none Fool and lately rather sporadic runner and one who doesn't follow training plans well, I might not be the best source of advice, however I'd like to share a piece of wisdom that grew out of training for a marathon shortly after my son was born.

With a baby and a toddler, no family in town and a husband with very irregular and insane work hours, I thought I never see the light of day or my running shoes again.  Husband, being very methodical and understanding how important moving is for sanity and health reasons, sat me down one day, thrust a planner in my hands  and made me write down when and how long and how often I intended to run/go to the gym over the next month.  We worked around his work hours, kids napping and bedtime and witching hour (Action Jackson did not enjoy battling witching hour with a colicky baby on his own).  Anyway, I digress.

We planned the week out and continued to do this every week/month until the children hit preschool, and I started working my schedule around those times.  What I took away from this, is that as long as I plan the workout/run (or whatever it might be) into my family schedule it will happen.  If I just wait for an opportune time to sneak out, it won't happen.  Contributing positive factors are of course a supportive partner/family that realizes the time set aside for you is important and helps you to make it happen.

Good luck with your training, Pat - I hope you can fit it in your busy schedule.
