West Highland Way Race, Scotland, June 20th, 2009

Just to let fellow Fat Assers know that Neil Ambrose, Carolyn King and David Crerar successfully completed the West Highland Way Race this past weekend.  David had a great performance and so did we with Carolyn completing her first "almost 100 miler"!  It was a fantastic experience set amongest stunning scenery - yes, I am biased because I am Scottish!  Please see Carolyn's blog for full gritty details!  It should be noted that the course record holder for West Highland Way, Jez Bragg, is competing this weekend at Western States so that should be a good story to follow!

What everyone really wants to know....

Did they serve Scotch at the aid stations?

Congrats to all of you....hoping to spend some miles on the trails with you so I can hear all of the details first hand!

Single Malt

No aid stations for 95 miles!  Scottish Ultra Runners are a tough breed!  We were welcomed at the finish by the RD offerring finishers a drink of single malt Glengoyne from a quiach (traditional Scottish cup of friendship).  Glengoyne Distillery was one of the race sponsors.  Carolyn, a non whiskey drinker managed to gulp down my share too......but I did get a taste!  The finishers award is a very nice engraved crystal goblet which provides yet another suitable receptacle for drinking!  Do you see the theme?

Cheers,

Neil & Carolyn

Sounds like a nice compliment...

....to your Tahoe Rim bottle opener medal!

I gotta get me one of those goblets!

You rock newbie, Carolyn!!

Your first 100 completed, what maybe a year after stress fractures? That's nothing but amazing.  Neil and David, you did great too.  Sounds like a wonderful race.  What's next?

Heartily recommended

This is one of the world's great ultra races, and heartily recommended to all, whether your Fat Ass is genetically girded in a kilt or not.

95 miles of ancient gorgeous scenery, speckled with highland cows and black-faced sheep. Meticulously organised, with a friendly local buzz.
