Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay

Well...I did it....I signed up for the 24 hour Relay at Swangard Stadium this coming June 14th & 15th. With a little help from 95 Crave FM, I managed to secure an entry into this event for a great cause. I've always wondered about running in a 24 hour event, but the thought of circling the same 400m track like a hamster has always been the proverbial "line-in-the-sand" as far as protecting my (limited) sanity went. This event gives a bit more variety in that it covers a 4.5km stretch of pathway, track, & trail...it's also pretty darn close to home.

The most alluring ideal was the fact that the event is a fundraiser for a great cause...essentially I could put my love of running to good use & raise some money for the Easter Seals Camps. The money raised goes towards giving children with disabilities the chance to go to summer camp where they can discover their own abilities, & develop new skills & friendships.

As Club Fat Ass members, I know that we all enjoy the outdoors...perhaps more than most others. I feel that it's important that everyone get the same chance to experience the fresh air, views, & camaraderie that spending time under the sky affords.

It is my belief that one person can make a difference.

I also believe that a series of individuals with a common committment can have an impact that is exponential.

It is my objective to raise money that benefits children with disabilities in order for them to attend the Easter Seals Camps. To do so, I need your help. Typically, the 24 hour Relay...as the name implies...is run in relay fashion by a team of runners. This team sets out to raise funds...on average, there are 20 individuals to raise funds & take turns running. It is my personal goal to complete the 24 hours on my own steam...in one continuous push....that is, I will continue moving forward from 10:00am Saturday morning June 14th until 10:00am the following Sunday morning (Father's Day). By the time all is said & done, I will hope to have covered the distance of 100 miles (160km).

Although I will be the one doing all of the "running", it is still a team effort. As I won't have a team of 19 others to rely on to raise funds, I need your help. Donations are most welcome, & word of mouth is very much appreciated. Those of you who know me personally, know that I can be obstinate, passionate, & myopic in reaching my goals. Even though I have run a couple of 100 mile races, I have never covered the distance in less than 24 hours. I find inspiration & drive in this cause & this is what will keep me moving forward for 24 hours. At the same time, I hope to inspire people to look beyond the boundaries that we set upon ourselves.

I am not only relying on your support, but also that of my crew. My crew will consist of my lovely & supportive wife, as well as my two young children....all of whom are anticipating spending 24 hours at the event. If you are interested in coming out to lend your support, run a couple of laps, or just taunt me through the wee hours of the night, please contact me...I have a limited number of access bracelets that will allow you on site.

Relentless Forward Motion.

What better way to spend Father's Day & my birthday?

Way to Go

Hey Glenn - what an amazing goal! I will be there running a few laps (depending on how I feel after the Van100....) (and if I show up late enough I might even be able to keep up with you, hee, hee :)) as my work is participating also. Will donate in the next few days (travelling light these days due to my runs to/from work :)) Sylvie

Should be fun

Sending positive vibes your way Glenn. This should be fun. I might see you there as my former employer wants me to join their team. Apparently I'm remembered as a "runner". The last time I ran everyone was amazed that I did 3 laps in a row and then I was forced to stop and drink beer. I think it took the full 3 laps to get warmed up.

So what are you looking at something like 34 or 35 laps? I'll get my donation in tonight.

Yesterday was a fun snow run by the way. 2:35 up from Cleveland Dam to Cypress and 1:15 back down. Finding the BP markers from Hollyburn to Cypress wasn't too bad.

Vancouver Island 24 Hour Relay

Hey Glenn, Rob Mackay passed along this blog post, and thought I should connect with you. I'm running the VI 24 Hour Relay as a solo this year with the same goal as you, trying to get in 100+ Miles. I've got just less then a week to go now so not much I can do about the training, right now I'm trying to get the last minute organizing done for my support team and prepare a fluid and fuel plan. I keep a blog too if you're interested in checking it out: http://www.trainharder.com/blogs/jarhead/

$$done deal

No whimping out now, donation is made :-) Did this take a lot of convincing to get them to accept a team of 1? I pretty sure some tried years ago (around '92-'94) and were told No!

Woohoo!

Thanks Rick! Not much convincing was needed. I won the entry from Crave 95.3, I just signed up, sent the organizers an email with my intentions & a bit of background. The only caveat is that I will need approval from my doctor. I also promised them that I would raise the same funds as a team of 20. Also, the event isn't set up with your typical ultra aidstation with electroltes, food, etc.. so I pretty much have to provide my own aid. Thank you Club Fat Ass for preparing me for this sort of thing!!! The organizers have been extremely accomodating in allowing me a special place to set up a table along the track where I can grab my own food & se my crew (the typical team has to get a space in the stands!!) as well as a camping spot nearby (for crew).

There has been a team of 1 for a while now

At least in the last two years, it was the same guy whose name i don't recall.

Looking at the registered teams right now, there is another solo runner, Barb Owen.

It's true...the fellow goes

It's true...the fellow goes by the name "The Lone Wolf". This is his third year. I don't know if he's a runner or walker but he is a soloist. According to Easter Seals, this is the first year they've had interest from "ultrarunners"....meaning Barb & I.

You rock!

I will definitely sponser you. Helping kids is the greatest goal ever. Go Mudrunner!

Put me down for a few laps

I wouldnt mind getting some night training runs in. That 2:00am-6:00am stretch is a killer.
