FAQ - 100 Mile Races

A couple of questions I frequently get asked related to 100 mile races: what's the easiest 100 mile race and what's the hardest 100 mile race?

In answer to the first question: they are all 100 miles; and to the second: the one you didn't train properly for.  These are probably not quite the answers people are looking for.  However, ultrarunner Gary Wang has a website: <http://www.realendurance.com/> which is devoted to ultrarunning.

Gary has created a comparision of relative finish times for various races using the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run as the benchmark race.  This list will probably give more satisfying answers to those posing the "which is the eastiest/hardest" questions.

The comparison is at:  <http://realendurance.com/index.php?FinishTimeList&s=ul>

It's an interesting site.  Look yourself up.  We know what you've been up to.

My knees agree

with your assertion (and Gary's) that it is stupid to run a 100-miler without realistic training.  I'm still beat-up after running the STORMY 100 last August.  In a cruel kind of way, I'm glad there's only one loop at STORMY this year... that way I won't be tempted to blow my brains out again.  (It's certainly a lot easier to fake 50-miles.)

I don't know how you have run so many 100-milers and can still crank them out.  Must be nice to be blessed with Forrest Gump genes!
