Stuff I Have Found on My Runs

Today, while out running, I found a YakTrak.  Did you lose one, by chance?

Last week I found one, too.  (Dho!  Different make and different size.)  A few weeks before that, Colin found one, as well!  How can you lose one of these and not notice?

Anyway, as I continued my run with this thing stuffed partially down my shorts, it got me to thinking about all of the stuff I have found over the years while running.

In North Vancouver were I live, the gob of snow we had over Christmas is finally melting.  It's kind of like the glaciers from the last ice age are receding.  All kinds of things are appearing on the surface of the melting ice blobs and next to the curbs where I've been running a lot since the sidewalks have not been runnable.

When I picked up Paul about half-way through my run, I spoke to his daughter.  She found a frozen squirrel the other day partially poking out of a melting snowdrift.

I have been amazed at how much dog poop is being exposed on the trails.  Do people really think they don't have to scoop when there is snow on the ground?

I often see single gloves and the occasional hat.  How can you lose a single glove?

One time I found a $5 bill blown up against a fence. (Any chance you lost one?  Ha ha. Finders keepers.)  Another time I found a fiver while running with my pal Greg.  We both saw it at the same time.  Though I claimed it first by stomping on it, we agreed to split it.  That was 12 years ago.  I still have half a $5 bill in my wallet even though Greg only lives 10 blocks from me!

Last year to celebrate Canada Day (1 July), I hiked up Cypress Mountain with my skis and got in a few turns just so I could say I did.  I found all kids of neat things on the grassy parts of the ski runs where the snow had melted.

All this to say that from now on I am going to:

  • do my level best to clean up whatever trash I find (even if it's not a Club Fat Ass event and even if I don't get Club points)
  • take photos of the cool stuff I find and share them here

Let the treasure hunt begin!

My Finds!

Ear ring, watch, Columbia fleecy headband, lululemon headband, dog doo, dog leash, dog collar, dog tag, kids gloves, kids socks, hairbands, driver license, gel flask, dog (remember, Pat?), knapsack with break and enter supplies (I called the police to report a found knapsack, as I though it probably was stolen from somebody - amazingly, an officer came by and identified the tools as things thiefs use to break locks).  I only have a vague memory of most of the items, as I usually drop them of at the nearest gym, public building etc.

I now also can add a winter

I now also can add a winter trax antislip thingie and a whistle to my collection of finds...Wintertrax was found in Capilano Canyon near the west side of the dam.  Contact me if you are missing one... looked like it's been there a while?

Bandannas

I now have eleven bandanas, which I wear constantly.* Most of these I have found on my runs. I suspect they were donated to my wardrobe by the niegbourhood dogs. Hahahahaha! * following strict colour co-coordination rules.

Recycled Bandana

Hey Jackal... you are probably the only guy on the planet to have more bandanas than me.

I'll bet you don't have one like one of mine, though.

My Mom's dog ate it.  But I found it in the back yard in the spring and, uh, rescued it.  Would mine be called a "filtered" bandana or a "recycled" one?

Lost and Found

Single gloves, single socks(?), hats, toques, underwear (male & female), empty backpack, long sleeved shirts (knots comes undone?), single running shoe size 10 mens near new, water bottles (of the re-useable varity) various denominations of money, gold bracelet, running jacket - bit moldy LOL I seem to have a good eye for what doesn't belong, I think in the time of snow melt we could each carry a large garbage bag out with us after a run of a couple of hours or more.

As to the dog deposits, I ran into a Sun reporter at the dog beach by the Maritime Museum and they were going to do an article on how bad it was this year. I had thought it was just more visible in the snow but nope, people thought that by the time the snow melted the deposits would compost. NOT. I'll start taking pictures of my end-of-run treasures

Blazing Saddles

One year during Knee Knacker race there was a bike helmut stuck in one of the mud holes atop Black Mountain.  That much was true, but over the years I have "stretched" the story to say when I kicked it I heard a muffled "Hey! Stop that!" When I asked the apparently disembodied head if it was OK, it replied "Yes, I have a good bike under me."

Many don't get it, I guess they don't remember that part of the movie.  Maybe it's the lousy delivery.

 Yes I lost a yak! - Size

Yes I lost a yak! - Size small while running last Saturday. It was flung off my shoe like a catapult when I snagged it on a small log. Myself & 3 others tried to find it in the bush but no luck. I have no idea where I was at the time, other than North Vancouver trails somewhere within 10k's of Jaycee House.

Guess I should have left those little straps on my yaks but I took them off to streamline application.....

We have a winner!

Hey Helen,

You must have had that elastic thaing really tight.  I found your Yak on the Mosquito Creek trail... about 8 kilometers away from where it went "boing!"

Send me a note and I'll get the Yak to you today.
