With reference to the reasons why I love the Bagger Challenge, a key consideration for me is the reward of a panoramic view from the peak and the exhilarating feeling of being on top of the world.
To that end, if the top of the mountain doesn't offer a decent view, it's really hard to get excited about gutting-out a run to the top of it.
What breaks my heart, however, is getting to the top of an otherwise spectacular peak in the fog or rain and not getting the view I worked so hard to earn.
Despite the best-laid plans for weekend baggage expeditions, rain happens in this part of the world.
This musing refers specifically to a personal dilemma regarding the 2010 North Shore Bagger Challenge. The weather forecast for this weekend is for rain. Yet, competition for the quaich is intense and I need to knock off a few peaks this weekend if I hope to remain in contention.
Which peaks should I consider? As a fellow participant in the Bagger Challenge, I trust you will have to ask yourself the same question from time to time.
What follows is my quick and dirty assessment of the best Bagger Challenge peaks to bag on a rainy or foggy day.
Assumptions
- you *want* to bag a peak in the rain
- you want to save the best views for good days
- you don't want to be wet for too long (e.g. no peaks that would require a 6-hour+ run to complete)
- you don't want to bag a potentially dangerous peak (e.g. slip on a wet rock and you die)
Note: this list is clearly open to interpretation so please feel free to share your comments and criticism.
Howe Sound Islands: LID, KIL, BCO
Liddell is a bushwhack with minimal views on the best of days. (See "Shitbag") Killam offers no view, but decent partial views of Bowen Island about 100m below the summit. The obscure knob that is Collins has no view and is a classic shitbag.
Cypress Group: BLA
Black Mountain does offer a view, but it's not spectacular.
Grouse Area: FRO, LIL
Fromme offers a decent view. LIL is another tree-covered knob with few redeeming features other than it's easy to knock-off when you're in the neighborhood.
Cathedral Range: LYN
The true peak of Lynn is a knob in the woods and a shitbag. Decent views of Seymour, however, from a viewpoint about 200m from the peak.
