Cool UBC ultra running study/ free race/run: August 20th & August 21st 7am

UBC Cardiovascular Physiology and Rehabilitation Lab is conducting an interesting study of long distance runners by holding a free 75K run/race through Pacific Spirit Park/ UBC Endowment lands.

I've volunteered to be a guinea pig and you should too!

Bonuses:

1. free VO2 max test (usually costs a few hundred bucks)

2. you can choose whether to run on Saturday (August 20th) or Sunday (August 21st) morning at 7am

3. mandatory half-hour stop in middle to do series of mental tests, check pulse, etc.

4. aid stations

5. gentle and green trails

6. results and (rumoured) prizes at end

The baseline testing and VO2 max test ideally take place at UBC between now and the race.  I just came back: it is about 1 hour long and fun and easy.

More info, from the study:

The Cardiovascular Physiology and Rehabilitation Lab at UBC (http://educ.ubc.ca/faculty/warburtoncardio/) needs runners to participate in a 75km trail run on August 20 and 21. This will take place at the Pacific Spirit Park and UBC Endowment Lands. There is no entry fee for this race but you must be capable of running the entire race.

The race involves five laps on a pre-set 15km course. Runners will be tested at the end of lap 3 for cognitive and cardiovascular measures, as well as after the race at three separate intervals (race finish, 60 minutes post race, 90 minutes post race). On course water, sports drinks, granola bars and energy gels will be supplied.

Prior to the race, runners will be invited to the lab for a free baseline health and fitness assessment, including a VO2max test.

This research may have applications for the health and training practices of ultra-marathon runners, and is the first study of its kind. If you are interested but cannot make the August 20/21 weekend, the lab would still like to hear from you.

For more details, contact the lab at cprlab@gmail.com or call 604.822.6881.

Pulled the plug at 171 BPM

Thanks for posting this David.  I did the pre-test last Thursday.  They pulled the plug on the treadmill when I hit 171 BPM.  I guess they figure a dead testee is bad for business.

I would encourage other CFA members to sign up.  Anything that contributes to the scientific knowledge of our sport is a good thing.  Remember when the prevailing wisdom was that running a marathon would cause a woman's uterus to collapse?

I'm doing the test this week

I'm doing the test this week and the run on Saturday. 75k is pushing it for me, but they seem interested by that kind of datapoint as well.

Thanks David, I would never have found out about it otherwise.

see you both there!
