What a club! If you’ve been fortunate enough to make it to an event you’ve probably taken home a prize or two from one of there many generous sponsors. Well I believe I just hit the jack pot. “But you might think otherwise”

I’ll start out with the prize and then tell you the story. How’s this for a prize, a free entry into the Rock and Ice ultra worth $2,500!! What is the rock and Ice ultra? It’s a 300k six day stage race over the frozen landscape of the Northwest Territories. Starting March 17th in the town of Yellowknife.

This all came about when Dom Repta hosted the Go home or Go deep event in August. Dom received this entry from the race director Scott Smith to be given away at his event and little did he know there was someone already making plans to do just such a race.

It just happens that at this time during the Summer I was burnt out on Vancouver’s North Shore and wasn’t even looking at the clubs calendar. And since this was my first year as a club member I seemed to have been jumping the border every weekend for a club event or race. So it was in that time frame that I missed getting in on this entry the first time.

After a few weeks I check back to the club site and what do I read about. A Free entry into the Rock and Ice ultra! What had I missed. I had looked into this race but with an entry free so high and the race so far away I had put it out of my mind. Instead I had entered into another winter race in Minnesota. Time went by and I kept thinking about how I could have missed such a prize. In fact at the Baker lake 50k I spent a hour on the trail talking with Mr. Mud about how I could find a way to snag another entry.

More time went by and I was once again looking at the club calendar for an event up north. And what do you know the next event is Dom’s Go home. Though I had not put it together yet that Dom had also hosted the Go deep or Go home back in August and it didn’t even cross my mind to find out who got the entry.

So I hopped the border and made it up for the run. It was there after the run that my fate would change. As every one sat around stuffing there faces with food I over heard Wade and Dom talking about what to do with the entry to the Rock and Ice. Well this got my attention right away and I had to speak up. “ So no one took that entry for the Rock and Ice” I had not known who had got the entry and it turned out that Wade had won it in the draw but had since decided not to go. I just had to see if I could find a way to persuade Wade to pass the entry along to me. Then after a few emails later that week I had done it. I was now going to be competing in the Rock and Ice ultra 300k Holy %$#@.

So now to the present as I sit here thinking of all the last minute things to get done before I leave this next Monday. I have an entire room full of stuff that needs to get packed and loaded for the journey north. Not only will I be running 50k a day but we are also required to pull a sled with all we will need for the entire six days. Sounding fun yet? You can ask all you want but I have no good answer to why I love these types of events.  It’s just some thing you have to experience to appreciate. Kind of like being a member of club fatass. Once you get past the name and see what an amazing group of people make up this club you just can’t help but want to be a part. So I realy want to thank everyone for all the hard work that has gone into this club and for this chance to show off some club colors.

You’ll be able to follow my progress throughout the race at www.rockandiceultra.com

My brain is really starting to fry but go ahead and shoot me any questions you may have.

Why not do a speaker event?

Go, Daniel, go!

I recall I was drinking beer next to you when Wader offered the ticket.  You could have been living the event vicariously through me rather than vice versa. Good thing I'm a suck when it comes to the cold, roving packs of wolves, polar bears, musk oxen...

Be sure and take lots of photos.  I'd sure love to hear about your adventure first hand as I'm sure many others in the Club would, as well.  Why don't you do a speaker evening?

Good luck!

PS  You are welcome to borrow my "peter heater".  I found it came in quite handy when I did the 160K Canadian Ski Marathon back east.  'May be a bit big for you (ha ha ha).  A plastic shopping bag to break the wind and an old wool sock will do in a pinch.

For sure

sounds like a plan.  I'b be happy to tell my story that is if I survive and return to tell about it.  good thing I don't drink beer so I can get in all the good deals.  Yes I know I'm crazy  Have you seen the weather up there lately it's been getting down to -30 a night.  May be I'll put some pants on.  you can keep you peter heater I wouldn't want to catch anything.
