Great Walk 2007

The flight back from Tahsis to Gold River

This years race was won by Steve Hanna from Comox.
300+ set off from Gold River B.C. on the 40 mile trek to Tahsis. Some new guys in the mix this time.
They took off from the get-go and I hardly saw them again.
Good three horse race up front, they worked hard at it and I think they all had the lead at one time or another.
I hovered around between 5th. and 8th. all morning, finishing 40 minutes behind my last time pace...
I didn't really need 2lts. of gatorade strapped to my back, but as I am used to training with that extra weight, I knew that I wasn't going to crap-out, mind you I MIGHT have been 30 minutes quicker without it!
Saw all my old buddies, some of them were still talking about the EB Ultras.
Elaine did really good, she PR'd by 52 minutes!
She has been training hard and attributes most of her success to the longer runs she has been doing with the Harriers plus her, 8 summits of Mount Douglas, training runs.
Highlight of the W/E was flying back by float plane from Tahsis to Gold River!
What a view, I never liked that two hour bus ride, from the finish back to Gold River.
ILTS!

The Return Trip From Thasis to Gold River

Hey Jackal,

Did you hear the one about the nutbar who won the race, ate a sandwich in the gym, ran back to his car, hopped in and drove back to Thasis just as they started to hand out the awards?

True story.  That was me!

Must be nice to fly!

Flying - Cool

I've been wondering about those arial photos on Flickr...Very cool.  Thanks for the update on the Great Walk.  I briefly considered making a trip out for this one, but I am just not trained for any distance right now.  Maybe next year.  The Great Walk is such a wonderful event.  The enthusiasm of the towns people was just out of this world (it's been a few years that we did the run/walk).
