2006/09/02 Running the Juan de Fuca Trail

When they say the west coast of Vancouver Island is beautiful, they aren't lying!

I was fortunate enough to join some CFA folks on a run of the Juan de Fuca trail this past weekend and, without much prior knowledge of the trail, I didn't really know what to expect.
The day offered up perfect weather, stunning views, steep ups and downs, some classic ridge running, rock hopping, cliff scrambling and (unsuccessful) wave dodging.  There was more bear scat then kilometer markers (but thankfully no bears), and the show put on by the pod of whales at Sombrio Point was amazing!

It was a tough 47km but I'd do it again in a heartbeat!  Same time next year - who's keen???

Thanks Carlos for the ride back to my car and thanks Ean for pushing me the last few kilometers and making sure I was okay.  You guys are great!

Congrats to you, Berg.  First for putting up with my motivational rambling and second and most importantly, for toughing it out and becoming what I think is the first woman to run the Juan de Fuca trail nonstop.  Even if you are not the first woman to run the trail, I'll bet you are the first to run it in 9:35!  You rock!!

Berglinds first blog post...

Heya Berglind,

Do you know how many emails I get asking how to upload photos?  You are the living proof that it is possible without even as much as an email ;-) You rock!

Congrats on keeping up with the boys and keeping them out of trouble.  At first I thought the rocks scrambling photo was you pulling up Ean, but now I realize it's Ean getting Carlos out of waves reach. Ever heard of rogue waves you guys? Sounds like you had an amazing adventure.

I'll never aspire to run the JFT (if it takes you 9:30h...I wouldn't make it before the bears come out and eat me up at night time anyway) but I am plotting to hike it one day in the not to distant future.

Cheers

Sibylle

The rock scramble...

That was great when after two attempt to get up that wet rockface, Ean finally grabbed my Camelbak and hauled me in, we used the same technique to get you up and over, I held onto Eans pack and you grabbed his arm.Great pictures, Miss Halfpint's Daughter.
Hahahahaha!
