Just wanted to say thanks to all the Club Fat Asser's who were either in the race or on the sidelines cheering us on. It definitely helped push me into a personal best of 3:36:29! Now let's see if this translates to better trail race times....A report may be in the works, compared to my epic ultrarace stories, there's not much that happens in 3.5 hours.

Congrats Baldwin, Didn't see you again after mile 5 or 6.
Hi Baldwin,
It was nice seeing you during the race. I thought I could keep up with your pace, but obviously was hard for me to run that fast. However, I pleased with my time too 3:56. It was a nice race. Weather was perfect. I still think the Burrard bridge is too much for mile 25... that seemed endless. good for you keep up the good pace. see you soon, Claudia
CONGRATULATIONS
Wow, Baldwin - that is an AWESOME time! Congratulations! You looked really good out there while I was trying to hunt Mike down (he finished with a PB of 3:19:56) Was it the water???
Well done (HOW did you do it?) And Carolyn is right - no more lawn chairs for you!
The secret is Super Stacking!
Back in January, I was really pudgy from Triple Century and Xmas holidays and was watching this late night infomercial by a guy named Tony Horton from Beachbody. Y'know the makers of P90X, well, they had this new product called 10 minute trainer. I was looking for a change and wanted to be motivated again so I went and bought the DVD workout at the fitness depot with the goal to be in the best shape to run the marathon.
Basically there are 5 workouts: Cardio, Total body, lower body, abs and yoga, each 10 minutes long. They give you a 3 week plan with 1-3 workouts every day except Wed. You could do 1 workout a day and see some results or you could go gonzo and do 3 workouts a day for faster results. Guess which way I chose? There's also a nutrition plan as well, but I didn't really follow it faithfully so I could've had a better time.
These workouts are TOUGH, the cardio is really the base workout so every day you're doing 10 minutes of cardio which by itself doesnt seem like a lot, but add two more workouts on top of that....
And that was it, I worked out every day for 90 days. Tues, Thursday, Sunday were marathon training days, but I did the three workouts on those days too. Two, if I was really sore. As you can tell, I'm a big believer in this product and will be incorporating this in KK training. But that's next week as I need some recovery and reward time.
Well, I didn't shave my head...
So I can't use that reason for my fast time.
I had a game plan: two pace bands 3:45 and 3:30. Carried 1200 calories in Gu and Clif bloks, 12 Saltstick caps, 3 Aleve and no water. Ate 100 cal every 20 min, salt pill every 30 min.
At the halfway mark I ripped off my 3:45 band because I was at 1:45:07 and I didnt want to run 2 hours for the second half. The weather helped a lot, could've been a little cooler, but I'll take that.
Cramped both calves at 36k, worked through it. Saw the 3:30 pace bunny at the 37k mark, my time was 3:08. The bunny said "only 5k to go, we can make it." I privately thought "Good luck with that. You're gonna run 3.1 miles in 22 minutes and you're going to be walking for two of those minutes. You'll need to run sub 6:30s"
Going over Burrard Bridge was a special joy, the climb leading up to it, not so much. Grabbed a sponge and cooled my neck/cartoid artery down and it did wonders. Found the strength to run,my arms are really out now, gotta learn to tuck in those elbows!
At 41.1km I spy Suhki in his Pacific Roadrunners singlet and here I am representing Runners Den (sorry CFA, I gotta go with the one that brought me to the dance). He seems to be looking over his shoulder and walking for a few steps and jogging a little bit. Should I say something to him or just pass him and leave him in his own little world? I decide to offer some encouragement and say Hey. The guy decides that he's not going to lose to me no matter how crappy he feels and outkicks me to the finish! Dammit! (I find out later that I beat him by 7 seconds due to Chip time. Boo-rah.)
I cross the finish line like I did at Diez Vista last year, laughing my fat ass off at a 27 minute PR, my best time at Vancouver was 4:03 in 2003.
That is Fast!
Congratulations Baldwin! Wow...that is fast! You won't be winning any Lawn Chair awards if you keep that up!
Cheers,
Carolyn
