Shirt Tales - chronicles of a Club Fat Ass shirt

Following my last outing (New Years Day CFA-50) I figured I might be shelved forever or worse, tossed into a bag for a local charity to pick up. Luckily, I was simply laundered and shelved. I felt like a benched athlete. Hey… it wasn’t my fault the Fat Ass 50 hadn’t gone as planned, don’t take it out on me buddy. Then, things started to look up. 10 short days later I was pulled off the shelf and tossed into a big bag. This wasn’t a small gym bag it was a big rolling tote bag. We were going on a road trip! Yahoo, where we going, where we going??

The next I new I was being unloaded in a hotel room somewhere. My running buddy Garmin told me that he had checked with the satellites and we were now in southern California. Cool. I had only been down here once before and that was a couple of years ago. Oh man, was it ever good to see some sunshine after 25 or so days of rain back at home. Also, being a short sleeved shirt in Vancouver is a huge disadvantage. Cooler temps and lots of rain mean less play time. I seem to get shelved a lot. Wouldn’t it be nice to live down here all the time…

I heard the humans talking about the upcoming race. Seems we were down here to run the Carlsbad Marathon! It was their mid winter escape to a sunny place, with an excuse to go run. Who needs an excuse to go run?? Carlsbad is located about 30 miles north of San Diego and man is it nice down here! I know why I was picked over all those other long sleeve shirts he has at home… it is plus or minus 3 degrees from 20 degrees Celsius 12 months a year down here, and I think they get like 250 plus days of sunshine per year too. Must be nice.

I was more than a little disappointed when my guy went to the run expo on Friday and came home with a long sleeve technical shirt. He even tried in on in front of me. Sure it was a nice red and grey, and yeah it was cheap, but come on man, it wasn’t a Club Fat Ass shirt! What did he want me to say? That I liked it??

Race day approached quickly. Luckily my guy took the Saturday off and really didn’t do too much. A bit of reading out by the pool in the sun, lots of sitting on the couch in our hotel room and watching Speed Vision. Oh, that is always fun. He even ate well and drank about 2 gallons of Gatorade. I think he was nervous about our blow-up and bonking session less than 2 short weeks ago. Don’t sweat it buddy, we are ready. That was just one weird day, I’m not sure what happened, but we won’t repeat it down here. Especially since we made the road trip all the way down here to do this run. Let’s go have some fun tomorrow!!

Race day dawned and my guy and his wife were up early. Breakfast and small shot of coffee and final decisions on clothing. WAIT a minute, what is the deal with pulling on that new long sleeve shirt and not me?? Whazup with that? That thing has not done his training yet. If you are going to wear long sleeves, at least use one of us that has put in our time. Seems he had looked out the window and saw a few overcast clouds and heard there was a chance at some showers and that it would “be a little cooler today

A Greenie

Hey red,

Whazzup?  I'm a greenie....one of only 20 ever created in the entire universe wayyyy back when in 2003.  Since a good 1/2 of my brethern have probably been used for bike rags by now, I'll bet that there are only 10 like me.  Eat your heart out....and maybe see you at the reunion!

Sun Deprived Shirt

This is torture...I am at least as deserving of a vacation in the sunshine than Pete's red CFA shirt. I have served my owner well, she wore me to all of the CFA events she participated in. But lately, I am rotting in the closet. It's getting damp in here too. I hear my owner muttering something about 5 weeks of rain...I think she might be loosing it. For sure her motivation for training has suffered gravely in this weather. From my dank vantage point right above the sock drawer it appers to me that everything is covered in green mouldy slime out there. Maybe I should just stay put until the sun comes out again.

Reply back from Pete's red Club Fat Ass shirt...

I hear your pain. Our owners seem to go batty when there is lack of sun or too much rain. Hey, don't they realize that it is still fun out there, even if it is raining. Don't park US because YOU don't want to get out and wet... I hear they have all been waterproofed anyway, they only get wet down to the skin, why are they worrying about a little rain?

I heard him talking about an upcoming 1/2 marathon in Vancouver in a few weeks. I'm going to start hoping to be "starter" in that fun too. I'm hoping he had so much fun that he remembers ME instead of one of his other shirts.

OK shirts, we all must unite. Lets see how many of us can get together for a photo session sometime soon. It will be like a great family reuniun. The last time we were all together was that time we were delivered from the printer after that silkscreening. We can chat about the many trips and events we have all been too, and some of the fun training runs.

Someday us CFA shirts may rule the world and be telling our humans when WE want to go out for a run, not the other way around. Think of the possibilities.

Signed "Pete's Club Fat Ass red shirt".

Ps  Did you know I have a twin (not identical) light blue brother??  I see him once in a while too. We had a bit of a spat last time we were together as he called me a red-neck.
