To help raise some money toward Wendy Montgomery's airfare and to get Wendy jazzed about her upcoming World Championship 100K run, some friends are organizing a special weeknight kickoff party. Here's the agenda:
5:30 - meet at the Griffin Rec Center in North Vancouver (Queens Avenue just west of Delbrook)
5:45 - join the Capilano Eagles running club for an organized workout of approximately 60 minutes
7:00 - meet at Mosquito Creek Grill (Westview Mall)
- mix, mingle, enjoy a free pint
7:30 - some background on the 100K National Team by former team manager Ean Jackson
7:40 - war stories by several past team members (Andy Nicol and others TBD)
7:50 - a few words from Wendy and a draw for valuable prizes
9:30?- home to bed
Who is Wendy Montgomery?
Wendy is a Brackendale, BC resident, (also North Vancouver for several years), full-time worker, a mother of 2 children, and Canada's top female performer at the 100 kilometer ultramarathon distance. She has been training and racing over the past year to prepare for the upcoming IAU 100 km World Cup on the island of Hokkaido, Japan (June 26, 2005).
Unfortunately, the ACU (Association of Canadian Ultramarathoners ) has very minimal funding available. What little funding they do have has
been allocated to cover accommodation and meals for all members of Team Canada during the stay in Japan. Wendy needs direct financial help (approximately $3000) to cover flight costs, ground transportation, and other basic incidentals.
The World Cup is just weeks away. Wendy has trained hard and is physically and mentally prepared to set a new Canadian woman's record for 100K. Right now, it's looking as if she won't be able to compete.
