Flash event: A loosely-organized, one-time group run This is a 48km trail run on the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail (JDF Trail). The JDF trail is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island and stretches between Botanical Beach near Port Renfrew in the west to China Beach near Jordan River in the east. The start is about an hour from downtown Victoria, British Columbia. If you are able to run 47km on rocky rooty trails, are not afraid of suspension bridges and exposed rocky outcrops, are self sufficient and can keep the group of runners entertained with stories for 6 to 10 hours, please express your interest with a comment below.
This weekend there is a group of runners from Sooke and Victoria planning to tackle the distance:
These are my plans for this week-end's assault....
1) Figure on it being between 8:00 and 10:00 hours.
2) Bring enough fluid for at least 8 hours.(4lts. minimum.)*
3) Strong shoes.(ie.trail runners.)
4) Expect to get them ankle deep in mud.(This is the dry season!.)
5) Try to get a DD/water boy.
6) Bring camera.(take pictures, but check 'em out at home.)
7) Keep moving at all times.
8) Do not stop to talk to the "Hippies" on the beaches.(we have all been there and done that.)
9) Run with someone, even if they are slower than you!
10) Be prepaired for 10-12 mins/kilometre(average pace)
*Creek water can be drunk at your own risk (recommended to use a filter or filter tablets) For the Sooke Basin(China beach end of trail) 2006-09-09 6:43 AM PDT Sunrise 2006-09-09 10:17 AM PDT 3.41 feet Low Tide 2006-09-09 4:06 PM PDT 8.23 feet High Tide 2006-09-09 7:39 PM PDT Sunset.
Meeting at Six Mile house at 7:00.
The only really tide sensitive beach is Bear Beach, so if we start @ 8:00 am from the China Beach trail head parking lot,(Day use access, not the first China Beach entrance, which is the camping).
Ideally, we need someone to drive a car to Parkinson Creek for 1:00 pm, for refueling for the last two hours, then drive on to Renfrew to bring us back (this person would not necessarily have to be at the start but he or she would have to be at the end of the trail for us around 3:00 pm, that would be 8 hours after the start, I'm planning to do it in 9 hous flat. It would be great to see him at 1:00 at Parkinson Creek though) If this person wanted to run, there are two options: Run towards us from either Parkinson creek or Botanical beach, or both.
Maximum number for two cars would be four for the full run (more with a Minivan, which I don't have this weekend) Other running option could also be worked out using my skeleton plan as a base.
You don't need to be a Club Fat Ass member to join Carlos on this run, but don't expect any babysitting and be completely self sufficent! To express your interest please contact Carlos
