Ean Jackson's 2006 Fitness Resolutions

This is bizarre for a last-minute, non-committal kind of guy to actually plan out a year in advance! Here goes:

Running events:

  • Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50 (Since I host it, I kind of have to run it, don't I?)
  • Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run
  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run
  • Mountain Highway Madness (at least 2X)
  • North Shore Enduro
  • XTC
  • Knee Knacker (assuming I get in)
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent
  • STORMY
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Nite Night Run
  • Forbidden Forest Run
  • Mountain Highway Madness
  • Silvertip
  • Go Deep or Go Home
  • 2 hash house harriers runs (dates TBD)

Apart from the running events, I aim to:

  • go to at least 50% of the Capilano Eagles Tuesday workouts (yes, rain or shine!)
  • stretch more...to the point where I can touch my toes
  • get in the pool once a week (on average)
  • get on the bike once a week (on average)
  • get into the gym twice a week (on average)
  • get on the snowshoes once a week (on average while there is snow)
  • get in at least 10 days of downhill skiing at Grouse and 5 at Whistler
  • not get injured any worse than I already am!
  • share some of my experience with a few up-and-coming runners and race directors
  • drink more water and less beer

That's 25 resolutions. Yikes!

Ean Jackson's 2006 Fitness Resolutions - Final Assessment

It's Sunday 31 December 2006.  Time to assess last year's goals and set new ones for '07.  I went totally nuts and listed 25 fitness resolutions last year, some very specific and some more general.  Here's how I did:

Organized Runs

I listed 15 by name.  I completed 12 of the 15.  Silvertip was canceled, so I'll remove that one from the count.  I couldn't do Bill's or the Enduro due to scheduling conflicts and I only did 1 hash run, so I figure I get 12.5/15.  However, I participated in the Dirty Duo, the Run to the Clouds, the Marathon Shuffle, Fluffy Bunny, Wendy's, Go Home and the Juan de Fuca Trail run that weren't on the list.  I think I should give myself bonus points but the rules of the contest say that I've got to measure what I said I would do.  Lesson learned:  Next year I will say "do 10 of the following 20 runs and add a few wild cards for good measure."  83%

Personal stuff

  • I came out to the Capilano Eagles more, but not 50% of the time.  I'd say I made 35% of the weekly training runs.  70%
  • I stretched, but still can't touch my toes.  I don't think I ever will be able to, so won't get too optimistic with this goal in '07.  75%
  • found I have a chlorine allergy, so only went in the indoor pools 5 times in '06, but made up for that in Kits pool (an open water pool) so I think I can fairly say I went swimming 21 times, or every other week, on average, in '06.  50%
  • my goal to return to biking was a failure.  I was only out on my road bike 6 times or so. 10%
  • there were peaks and valleys, but I'd say I was in the gym 52 times.  100%
  • assuming it was possible to snowshoe for 20 weeks and I went 15 times, that's not bad.  75%
  • my knees are still knackered, but have no new injuries.  100%
  • I did a lot of volunteering (Club Fat Ass, Capilano Eagles, etc.) this past year.  100%
  • Well, I could still drink less beer and more water, but I think my ratio is OK.  90%
All in all, I'd say I did not bad.  I'll give myself a 75% achievement score, take myself out of the competition, and to make sure I stand a better chance of achieving them, I'll update my 2007 resolutions!
