It was a perfect day weather-wise for a run, except that it was just cold enough to create a bit of black ice on the pavement leaving the start area. The two Fools at the front went down almost simultaneously, followed immediately by a number of other people. The first Fool landed flat on his back, his head hitting the pavement with the sound of "a pumpkin smashing" as someone commented. Wonder what was meant by that? The second Fool landed partly on his side, bruising his hip and knocking the wind out of him. He managed to stand up, stagger a few feet, say "I can't breath" and pass out in a small stream of water. Someone yelled "call 911". As people were rushing to get out their cell phones the Fool suddenly sat bolt upright with vacant eyes wide open and shouted "I'm OK". After a brief delay to make sure there were no more injuries the group started again, this time avoiding the pavement. The Fool who passed out wisely decided to call it a day...probably the shortest run he's ever participated in. The rest of the day was uneventful, everyone enjoying the beautiful trails of Pacific Spirit Park.Now for a Mea Culpa: The event host, being long on years, but short on memory forgot his own course description. The run should have gone out the back of the parking lot and returned the same way. The unfortunate human bowling pin event at the parking lot entrance was totally unnecessary. Sorry!
