*********************************************************

Here is a GPX and a KMZ file for your use FOR THE OLD DIRECTIONS.

We really don't want you to get lost, but we guarantee you might if you don't print off these instructions! If you're not familiar with the Baden Powell Trail, consider hooking up with a buddy. Please give us your feedback so we can improve.

Time Description km
8:30 Meet at Panorama Park, Deep Cove, North Vancouver
8:31 Sign waivers
8:55 Welcome, final briefing, group photo
9:00 All the signs you want to see along the way look like this one: 6” square with a high quality silver and blue BP Sign indicating the Baden Powell Trail direction and at times including distances. Also watch for the orange BP Triangles nailed to the trees regularly along the way. Follow the Baden Powell Trail the entire way to Deep Cove. Distance is about 12.5 Km each way, 25 Km round trip. 0
Feel free to turn around at any point to make the run as short as you want.

Lynn Canyon start

NOTE: FOLLOW THE ROUTE INSTRUCTIONS FOR DEEP COVE START BELOW.

The trail begins at the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge. Cross the bridge, take the stairs up and to the right on the boardwalk. Turn right at the sign "Twin Falls, 20 minutes"

*** BE VERY CAREFUL ON ALL WOODEN STRUCTURES AND ROCKS, STAIRS, BOARDWALKS, STEPS, ROOTS, ETC - THEY ARE EXTREMELY SLIPPERY AT THIS TIME OF YEAR. ***
After several minutes you will be running along the boardwalk beside Lynn Creek. At the end of this is are several sets of stairs and uphill trail. Head to the top where there is an intersection with a signpost "Lillooet Road 0.5km". Turn left.
At the paved road, cross to the right and go up the trail. This is Lillooet Road. See the large sign "Baden Powell Trail" with a Scouts Canada logo. Follow the small sign "Baden Powell Trail to Riverside Drive". You will go under the Power Line.
Take note: There is only one "T" in Lillooet but several L's and O's.
After the Power Line the trail crosses a pipeline and heads down down down to a long set of steep stairs that land on a bridge crossing a deep gorge. Head up the hill and stay to the left. Sign to the left reads "No Angling Area". Go through the wooden gates and uphill for a short trip to a fork in the trail. Take the right fork to Hyannis Drive.
Arrive at Hyannis Road, go straight across, read the sign that tells you when the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides built the trail. You're on your way to Seymour Road.
Heading uphill you eventually cross a bridge and go a few minutes to the large boulders and stay straight. Go across a narrow wooden walkway. Arrive at a T-intersection. Turn left. Do not follow Bridle Path. Stay on the BP Trail.
You are now heading toward the Seymour Grind. The next section has EXTREMELY SLIPPERY BOARDWALKS. YOU MAY WANT TO WALK BESIDE SOME OF THEM.
Up up up, zig zagging to the top. Stay on the BP Trail. At the top arrive at a T-intersection, turn right and go downhill toward Seymour Road. DO NOT TAKE "Bridal Path via Good Samaritan Trail".
At the bottom of the hill there is an intersection where you will first go over a small bridge, then stay left on Old Buck Trail, go uphill for a few paces to a right turn. Follow the "Baden Powell" sign with the big arrow, to the right.
Cross Seymour Road to the small parking lot with outhouses nearby. WATCH FOR TRAFFIC!!! Two vehicles were recently impounded here for racing at 200km/hour uphill.
Continue to the left down the BP Trail, nicely groomed and fast. All the way to Indian River Road. The sign says "The Baden Powell Trail continues 0.5km East on the road." Turn left and follow the road to the Power Line.
Immediately after the Power Line, turn right on the trail, do not go down the gravel road. The sign says "Indian Arm Lookout 0.7km"
At the Power Line once again, turn right and go straight. There are two trails here, take the left trail that is basically straight ahead of you under the Power Line.
You will veer to the left and downhill and fairly soon come to a sharp right turn. If you go straight here you will be on the Quarry Rock viewpoint. Stop and look if you like because the view of Deep Cove is very nice here.
The trail to Deep Cove is now winding and rolling and easy to follow except for one spot near the very end: do not go right, stay straight. Say hello to all the other trail people and dogs.
At the bottom of the final stairs come out to the road. Turn right and follow the sidewalk all the way to the parking lot and the fire hydrant. This is your turn-around point. Take pictures, note your time, be thankful you are half way done. Turn around and go back to Lynn Canyon. 12.5km
Deep Cove Start: In Deep Cove, the trail begins about 200 meters North down the road on the left hand side. Look for a steep little driveway and a BP Sign. Take the stairs up, way up. This section takes you up over 9 bridges, 1 long set of stairs and to the power lines.
BP Sign: Turn left (right turn is the Indian Arm Lookout)
Run under the power lines and then take the immediate left turn and go UP. If you end up taking the service road under the power lines this will come out at the same spot but is slightly shorter. If you end up going down a trail after the power lines, turn around.
BP Sign: Arrive at Indian River Road: Turn left and follow the road straight for 5 minutes to the water tanks on the right. Along the way, notice the nice house in the middle of nowhere. Take note of the address "4488". There is a BP Sign here at the water tanks so pay attention, go straight and do NOT take the trail behind you to the right up the mountain (it’s very steep eventually).
The BP Trail rolls nicely and is very easy to follow over 12 bridges. But it’s all up.
Arrive at Seymour Road and the Centennial Baden Powell Trail Sign. There are toilets here and a garbage can. Please watch carefully for FAST CARS as you cross the road back on to the nice rolling trail.
Come across another bridge just before a trail intersection. Be careful here. Turn left then turn right immediately.
Another trail intersection. Right is Old Buck. Left plus 60 paces is yet another BP Trail intersection. Go over the bridge, straight, and UP over another bridge. There are signs here so please read them and pay attention. You ultimately want to be going up in roughly the same direction you were going before all this intersection stuff. Do not go through any “gates”. Stick to the well worn BP Trail.
BP Sign: You’ve reached the top! (so far) This is where the BP takes a definitive left turn down through what we call the Seymour Grind. This section is generally rough AND SLIPPERY. After a few minutes there is a sign with a sharp left turn just before you start to head down again. BUT CONTINUE STRAIGHT and start to go down.
There will be a vague left turn after traversing back and forth down the hill where you need to watch for loose and slippery rocks. All these “vague left turn” trails meet up. And then there are new bridges and mud on both sides and maybe in front of you too. Most of the great big metal spikes in the SLIPPERY old broken down wooden bridges are gone. Lots of fun! But watch your step and admire the handiwork of the new walkways that many of us have had a hand in building.
BP Sign: Important Intersection!!! Turn right. You don’t want to miss this one but it is fairly obvious. You then quickly reach a small creek with a bridge. Do NOT go over the bridge. Go straight. To Hyannis Road is another 0.7 Km. Lynn Canyon is only 4.6 Km from here.
BP Sign: Now you want to go over the creek … turn right. There is a new bridge. The Knee Knacker Trail Work Party was here in June 2003.
BP Sign: You’ve arrived at Hyannis Drive. Cross the road and keep going down the stairs and the boardwalk. Lots of slippery steps on the boardwalk, watch out. Danger: on the way to Seymour River, there are lots of slippery logs and stuff to slip on and the terrain is quite varied. Please take your time and arrive in one piece.
Distances From Hyannis Road: Seymour River 1.0Km, Lillooet Road 1.Km, Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge 3.9 Km. And the elevation gain/loss to the Suspension Bridge is –150m/+145m. But that just doesn’t describe the trip very well … have fun going down, up, down, and up again ...
BP Sign: Important Intersection … turn left and go down the gravel trail toward Riverside Drive.
Riverside Drive intersection with a big sign. Do not go straight out to the road. Turn 90 degrees right and go down to the bridge and Seymour River. You will see the foot bridge right away. Look at the nice fast flowing cold river. Then go up the super really steep steps.
After winding UP UP UP the trail, step over the big water pipe laying across the ground. Go straight under the power lines, do not turn on to any other trails.
BP Sign: You’ve arrived at Lillooet Road! Only 2Km to go. Turn right-ish and immediately go across the road. Turn left and get back on the trail.
BP Sign: Important Intersection … take a sharp right and go steeply down to Lynn Creek. Near the bottom there are some steps and a very big Douglas-fir tree. In fact, it might be a Grand Fir. Admire it and move on toward more steps and the slippery boardwalk. If you want to check out Lynn Creek take the small ramp down off the boardwalk to the sandy area and have a look.
BP Sign: Twin Falls Bridge on the left. The BP sign is on the right and in the direction you want to go. Take a look at the creek again if you like. But go back and UP the stairs on the same side you’ve arrived. These are very nice stairs so be sure to enjoy them.
Big White Sign: Turn left to the Suspension Bridge and stay left on the boardwalk and steps.
Cross the Suspension Bridge and check out the awesome view. Be mindful of the tourists and locals.
Continue across the bridge and UP the stairs to the Lynn Canyon Café. At the right of the building are some washrooms.
Finish! You made it! Arrive back at the parking lot. Head to Delaney's Coffee House at Mountain Highway and Lynn Valley Road. 25km

2012 - Pure Satisfaction Results - Year 10

Starter Photo - 9 December 2012 (29 Starters)

Report:

It was drizzling at the start in Deep Cove, our favourite starting point, sorry Craig! There were 28 starters and one retriever, Dynasty, who was working the crowd for pats like a professional. Mind you once she got on the trail her nose went into overtime and poor Craig had to slow down, you cannot rush a sniffing dog. We were chased on the first section by Gottfried's dog desperately tracking him down, what a reunion it was. The group soon spread out and as we climbed the slopes of Seymour the snow began. Luckily it wasn't really sticking, so we only had to contend with lots of mud and a little ice on some of the wood walk ways on the top of Seymour. Even the Lynn boardwalks were not icy after having been warned they might be.

Randy was doing the loop twice for 50kms, so we saw him three times, crazy man. In the process he set a new course record of 6:05, well done Randy. Of course we now have an up and a down route, so what's it going to be next year? By the time we came back over Seymour it was really getting it's winter wonderland look with the trees drooping under the snow, what a treat. Deep Cove was soon reached and Honeys beckoned for eggs benedict and coffee. there were still a few runners finishing off lunch so there were two lucky winners of Trail Runner magazine subscriptions, thank you Sibylle and Club Fatass.

The only oops moment of the run for us was when we got back to Vancouver and realized we had left the sign in clipboard on the rear wheel of the car, so back we went to Deep Cove to retrieve it, we didn't want to disappoint everyone by losing their results. Luckily for us it was lying forlornly in the parking lot, safe in it's plastic bag.

Thanks for coming out everyone, it was fun and maybe next year we can do a dual start to satisfy everyone. See you at the Fatass 50.

2013 - Pure Satisfaction Results - Year 11

Starter Photo - 15 December 2013

Report:  As usual it was drizzling in Deep Cove but it didn't last long and was relatively warm and dry for the whole run! There were 18 starters and Bella representing the canine Fatass contingent. The climb out of Deep Cove rapidly spread the group out and, apart from a few mountain bikers, the trails were pretty quiet. The stretch up Seymour was mud central and the trail maintenance folk were having a hard time keeping everyone on the 'green carpet'. As I turned off the main Seymour trail one of the mountain bikers landed on their head, two feet are better than two wheels sometimes! At least there was no snow and ice this year, just mud! I bumped into Phil just before Hyannis Drive and we caught up on life, the universe and everything. He started early as he wanted to be off the trail before 1:30.

The section past Hyannis Drive was in Winter Wonderland mode, definitely worth a walk when the snow comes. Apart from a patch of ice after the one bridge before the turnaround things were pretty normal, thanks for the warning Erik and I hope the 'wolf' pack of dogs didn't bug Bella? On the return trip over Seymour I spent a fair bit talking to Denis, a dedicated North Shore trail walker, always great to get different perspectives on what we do for fun.

All in all a fun Pure Satisfaction run, thanks everyone for coming out and I hope it prepares you for whatever adventures you're planning for 2014.

Thanks, Keith

2011 - Pure Satisfaction Results - Year 9

Starter Photo - 11 December 2011 (missing a few late comers,  a couple of dogs and their owners and Craig, our host)

Report:

Year number 9!  And the weather was perfect. It was our second start from the Lynn Canyon end and I'm thinking I like it better that way although Pure Satisfaction stalwart Keith Nichol and his running companion Corinne preferred the traditional Deep Cove start along with some others. Thankfully the Event Host doesn't have to have a reason but at least one of them is that it took me less than 4 minutes to drive to the Lynn Canyon start ... guess I coulda walked I suppose. But then I wouldn't have had a place to store piggy while we all went for a stroll.

Karl and Chad showed up well on time after starting in Deep Cove earlier on their planned 50km event. Karl squeezed it out in the end and Chad was done after 30km. We had a couple of stragglers and a couple of newbies and about the finest weather you could have hoped for. Crisp, clear, cool, almost no ice and slippery bits except for the boardwalks here and there.

Prizes were given out at the beginning although a bunch of us floculated at Delany's after the run for coffee (two members of Bagger Team Dodgy were in attendance along with piggy).

After coffee and treats we slowly departed and began thinking of our next Vancouver event ... the Fat Ass 50 run and dip. Hope to see you there on January 1 and thanks for attending Pure Satisfaction once again.

Craig

2010 - Pure Satisfaction Results - Year 8

Starter Photo - 12 December 2010 - 38 Starters

Report: It was wet, it was mild, it was wonderful! The overwhelming feeling of the run this year from feedback received so far is that the temperature and the water combined to make this event totally fun and enjoyable. In past years I've had runners shivering at the start line hoping the run would start very quickly. This year we were cool but mostly wet and the rain didn't even come down that hard once the run began.

It was a great turnout of 38 starters and lots of variety with custom runs and dogs leading runners astray. The speedsters were out and the newbies were in full force. I'm sorry if you got lost - I updated the course instructions though so I'm not too sorry. I'm sorry if you got wet - I put in a special call for sunshine but all we got was the liquid kind. And I'm sorry if you missed out on the warmth of Delany's Coffee House at the end, along with a few prizes for those lucky enough to turn up there for a run review and previews of what each of us has in store for the next one.

A shout out to all those that stayed in bed under the covers ... you missed a fun one. A reminder to sign up for the New Year's Day Fat Ass 50 and Freeze Some Crazy Parts of Your Sore Body Swim. And thanks very much to everyone, especially the multi-year participants of Pure Satisfaction, for coming to join us for a swim on the trails today.

By the way, was that a new 25km course record by Mike Palichuk??? In fact, I think the first three finishers scored big time over the previous record of 2:47 by Ryan Conroy. Nice!

Thanks to Kintec, Sugoi, TrailRunner Mag and Gottfried Grosser for the draw prizes

2009 - Pure Satisfaction Results - Year 7

What a great day it was.  Near perfect conditions for this time of the year - not counting the black ice, of course ;-)  If you haven't submitted your times yet, please send us an email or post a comment below.

Event Report:

Pure Satisfaction has always been a popular run: right from day one seven years ago. I’ve enjoyed every year of it even in the slippery cold and sometimes rainy and the sometimes dark starts. And I figure people keep coming back year after year so others must like it too. Like our dedicated Chief Fat Ass, Sibylle, who has participated more than anyone else now (6 times).

And there are enough finishers since 2003 to enable me to collect some pretty serious statistics. We’ve had 213 finishers, an average of 30 finishers each year, and we’ve max’d out at 52 starters (2008) before we changed a few rules about getting CFA points. This year we had 33 starters matching the 2007 total of 33 as well.  And it’s nice to see so many people running the distance they want to do. Everything from a gentle hour or two custom length to one leg of 12.5km and up to 50km.

We’ve also had all kinds of weather over the years but a few of us agree this was the best year yet. At the start line I didn’t even hear teeth chattering, like last year. And on the course, even though there was a bit too much ice in spots (Lynn Canyon board walks in particular and outrageously brutal I might add), it wasn’t wet and it did snow just enough to cover everything in a couple centimeters of white stuff to keep a bit of traction in some difficult places.

And let’s talk about records for a minute … this year we had Ryan Conroy setting the second fastest time ever for 25km at 2:47. And along with two other 50km runners doing a very notable 8:44 on a tough course, (Karl Jensen and Kirsten Ramage, woohoo!), David Crerar now holds the course record at this distance in a speedy 6:48! Wow!!!. Nice run David. And I know that Pushpa Chandra was going for 50km as well; but, as wonderful a runner as she is, this is not an easy course. Pushpa gets to settle for a very respectable 37.5km.

Thanks to the first time Pure Satisfaction runners for coming out I hope you had as much fun as I did being out there. I stuck near the back with Reagan and had a great time. We kept finding all kinds of reasons to stop and take pictures and visit with other runners. We even saw one of my good friends Randy on his horse in Lynn Canyon.

I didn’t hear of anyone getting severely lost this year by the way. But I did catch wind of a major elbow injury from Ray and some hand gashing by Heather … slippage was a problem for all I’m sure. In fact, if you made it through without any scrapes in those conditions then you did very well. I myself drew a drop ‘o blood on my hand. And there were some lengthy patches of ice both hidden and in plain view. The granular snowfall helped to conceal many of them unfortunately.

But now another Pure Satisfaction is done and I’m looking at a change for next year … a good one I hope. Yes, the event will go on, with me … but I’m going to change the starting point. Starting in December, 2010, I will have us all begin in Lynn Canyon and (probably) run to Deep Cove, then back to get 25km … or back again and again if you’re a Fool (you know who you are). The 50k’rs like starting in Lynn Canyon anyway so I say we might as well join ‘em. I’m looking forward to it and I hope you are too.

Pure Satisfaction 2008 - Saturday StartEvent Report: Thanks to everyone that came out on a chilly day for the run. We had a record 64 people sign up and about 34 people showed up for the official start on Sunday morning in Deep Cove. All the others either ran on Saturday or earlier Sunday morning from Lynn Canyon and we had 2 people running up in Vernon. Of course, there were the expected no-shows but for today it was understandable as many of them were Snow-ins. There was a light dusting of snow on the trail but I know there were several areas around the Lower Mainland that got a whole bunch more snow.

It was quite chilly at the start but with our 9:04 am beginning time the sky was bright and everyone was ready and anxious to go. We had a few first timers and, as always, a small number that weren't familiar with the good ol' Baden Powell Trail. I asked the newbies to stick with someone experienced and not just bunch up so they could get lost together, if you know what I mean.

Unfortunately we missed the double loopers that started in Lynn Canyon earlier. I thought we would see them at Deep Cove for our start time. I hope they were all okay and I'm sure they were. No shortage of experience in that group. And I received some words from Karl about trees being down on the trail:

Pure Satisfaction 2008"The trees came down across the BP trail a few hundred metres up from where the "new" bridge crosses Canyon Creek above Riverside.  It's on the section where new gravel has been laid down recently.  Those trees were standing when Gilles and I were heading out on our first loop.  They were down when we came back.  It looks like a very large tree snapped and took out a couple of others on its way down.  Glad we weren't in the area at the time."

I must say, with this being the sixth running of Pure Satisfaction, I am so happy that lots and lots of you feel fit enough in December to join us. And for those of you that think you have to be able to run forever just to be part of a Club Fat Ass event, forget that. Walkers and hikers are welcome as well. In fact, I spent the morning walking with Ethelyn on the Trail in the Deep Cove area and we had a great time.

By the way, you'll see that some distances are set at 25km. This is because we're updating the official length of the course now that all the GPS'rs are reporting in and some convincing has been done for the event host. So if you included the section between the Deep Cove parking lot and the trailhead in your run then you can call it 25km from now on.

I'm sure you all had fun, thanks for participating. I hope to see you at my other CFA event in June, the Vancouver 100.

Craig

p.s.   I got an e-mail from our Vernon friends, Lorie and Barry, with a nice little report:

"Well we froze are fatasses off. It never warmed up at all and the wind picked up. We ran in the park [Kal Park] for 20k in knee deep snow for 3:20. It was beautiful but that was only 20k so we hit the back roads around the park with our yak tracks on and did 30K more in 3:30. Frozen and very tired we hit the hot tub to melt. We did have a blast even the insides of our gators froze. Glad to hear you guys had an easy run. Man I used muscles I forgot I had today. Put us in for 50k in 6:50. sad!!!
Back to the hot tub.
Lorie
ps We did eat candied smoked salmon each loop. Yum! Yum!"

2007 - Pure Satisfaction Results - Year 5

Starter Photo - 9 December 2007

What a wonderful day it was. There were lots of new faces. Welcome all! The trails were beautiful and frosted with a layer of ice crystals, the boardwalks were treacherous and the black ice deceiving... Congrats to all who finished todays run.

The post event survey is posted here and will close 13 December. We appreciate your participation.

More than ever … Pure Satisfaction 2007

A record 33 runners took to the trail on Sunday. This was the fifth running of Club Fat Ass Pure Satisfaction on the Baden Powell Trail of North Vancouver. Most of us started in Deep Cove as usual but there were 4 hardier souls that lined themselves up to complete 48km for the first time in this event.

The four big distance people were Gilles, Karl, Chad and John. They started 2 hours ahead of the group sharp at 0700h plus the full time from the 5-minute rule. Beginning in Lynn Canyon at the traditional turn around point, they headed across the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge and made it to Deep Cove right at 9:00 am after slipping and sliding their way over the first 12km of their run. All four are experienced and capable long distance runners. Most notable though are Karl and Gilles. Karl is recently back running (and ultra training) after being off several months with a nagging back problem that has magically disappeared. And Gilles finished the Birch Bay marathon on Saturday the day before our run. Along with Gilles, Chad is training for Western States 100 mile race, and, of course, John is always in training for the next big one (and the next big conversation).

As for the rest of us, we gathered in the chilly zero degree December air to get our run briefing and have our picture taken against the backdrop of Mount Seymour. I was adamant that we watch out for one another, especially the newbies, and that we all take great care on the slippery patches. When Karl and the others arrived as I was speaking, they told us of how dangerous the route was for them. So we took their advice seriously and set off to have a whole bunch of fun.

It had ever so lightly snowed and the ground was hard. But all I heard was lots of chatter. It continued snowing the whole time but you could almost count the number of flakes falling there were so few. I was hoping for a bit more snow because it is a very pretty route with 10 or 20 cm of the fresh stuff around.

I followed along near the back and was running with Sibylle and then John for a bit. Once I got to the top of the trail where it turns down to the Seymour Grind, I chatted with Arthur to help keep him on course. As I got ready to turn around, I strongly suggested he stick with John who was close behind because this was Arthur’s first time on the course. For those of us that are familiar with the area, we know how easy it is to go astray. As it turned out, John ended his run when he got to Lynn Canyon after 24km and Arthur decided to call it a day as well. I understand that he took a cab back to Deep Cove.

For the rest of the runners, eventually they all made it back to Deep Cove before 5-1/2 hours was up. The fastest coming in was Patricia with Colin, Mel and Carolyn hot on her heels. When Patricia arrived it certainly seemed as though someone or something had been chasing her! And it seems like 3 hours is the still the time to beat. Hardly anyone has done this run in less than 3 hours. In fact the course record still stands with Casey Charleson from the first year in 2003. His time was about 2:45.

When mostly everyone was back, about a dozen of us went to the Lazy Bay Café at Parkgate and had some yummy treats and coffees. It was warm and we chatted for a nice long time while thinking of the others still on the trail.

I was happy to see a few repeaters to the event. But I was sad to see the Keith didn’t make it out due to technical difficulties with his house keys. And I’m very happy that Pure Satisfaction has been so popular. Oh and thanks very much to Colin for doing the GPS thing so we can see better what we've done.

I hope you’ll all join me again next year.

Thanks everybody for coming out and making this 4th running of the Pure Satisfaction a great success.  21 runners toed the start line ready to brave the elements. In the end the rain and wind fore casted didn't materialize, the snow had almost completely disappeared and the blow downs were manageable.

Thank you to Berglind for weathering the cold and handing out Craig's Zone Bar's at the turnaround.

Thanks to North Shore Athletics, TrailRunner, Kinesys and Body World 3 everybody who showed up at the Lazy Cafe got away with a draw prize.

I listed preliminary results below.  If your time is missing, be sure to email them to us. Please also feel free to add your perspective of the run as a comment below.

Craig will post the starter photo and his report soon.

2005 - Pure Satisfaction Results - Year 3

30 Starters

Pure Satisfaction December 11, 2005 Run Report

Brrrr it was chilly! … and wow it was fantastic!

We had sunshine and blue sky and remnants of the last snow fall still in place up on Mt. Seymour. And even better, we had enough people do a custom route to make sure that Pure Satisfaction was a classic Club Fat Ass event.

It was also nice to hear so many people say what a great route the Baden Powell Trail is between Deep Cove and Lynn Canyon. I’ve known that for a long time, along with lots of other people. And we’re all glad to share it with the newer club runners.

Our quickest participants today were Danilo Caron, Chris Benn and Bill Dagg, all coming in at 3:05h. They were still a fair way off the course record set by Casey Charleston a couple years back (2:45h) but 3:05h is a very respectable time for a rough and slippery 24Km course.

At our pre-run chat Sibylle singled me out for being such a big Fat Ass and winning the points series this year. I was very happy to be given a complimentary CFA membership for 2006 along with a gift from our new sponsor, North Shore Athletics. They sent along a nice and comfy NSA sweatshirt that I gladly put on after the run to stay warm. I must mention that Bill Dagg and Cheryl Johnson were pretty big Fat Asses as well in 2005, trailing me for several months in the point standings and being sure to keep me honest. We each came out for 12 events but since I hosted two and picked up garbage for extra points along the way I held the lead. I knew I had to show up for every event possible or slip behind them quite easily. Of course they were both at the event today.

I have to say it was all fun and all worth it as we got to participate in so many great and challenging events this year. Of course, the most notable and memorable has to be The Double in June. In fact, three of The Double runners came out today to participate in Pure Satisfaction (Karl Jensen and Gilles Barbeau and me). Next year you can try your hands (and feet) in the Vancouver 100 since The Double has been put to rest. Same great course but now 4 extra kilometers! I think that’s even better value for your low membership fee, is it not?

After the run today a few of us stopped in at Lazy Bay Café for lunch and prizes. Just about everyone won something, including water bottles and hats from North Shore Athletics, a subscription to Trail Runner magazine, a cool book on trail running, some gels and also a pair of tickets to the upcoming CFA sponsored event in March for Jesper Olsen on his World Run.

Lastly, thanks again to our one-person crew, Ethelyn, for braving the cold at Lynn Canyon (on the far side of that awesomely slippery suspension bridge) so that we could have a moment of rest and a Zoneperfect bar to help get us back to Deep Cove. I hope to see you all next year and also at the next CFA event on New Years Day.

Pure Satisfaction -blog post

Three years ago, during the first Pure Satisfaction Run, we jokingly called it "Pure Aggravation"...It poured for the entire run. We are not talking rain, we are talking West Coast monsoons. The trails were hidden under knee deep mud and it never really got light.

Not this year. The morning dawned bright and beautiful. There was some fog hanging over Deep Cove, but as soon as we ascended towards the Indian Arm lookout, the sun rays started to trickle through the thick tree canopy. Event Host, Craig Moore, was out in his shorts. The trails were in great condition, considering that it was mid December.

For my group of turtle paced friends this was supposed to be the second last long training run before the New Year's Day 50 in three weeks. I needed proof that a 5h run would not trash me, like it did at Mike and Melissa's Fun Run in November. After finishing half of the course last year in 2:42h, I figured, we'd take between 5-5.5h this time around for the full course. Making my way up to Indian River Road together with Craig, Michelle and Cheryl, it occurred to me that my math was somewhat faulty ;-) I can't remember the last time I had a negative split!

We all felt great, the sparking sunshine from a deep blue winter sky made us almost giddy. Carl's Jensen's now famous line "this is runnable" became our motivator. The gossip meandered from "how gossip starts" to "how to stay away from gossip" to examples of why you don't won't to end up as the subject of gossip (no more details, sorry). A more constructive topic were our athletic New Year's Resolutions and the "New Year's Resolution Contest" hosted on this site. Cheryl wants to qualify for Boston and crew at either Badwater or Western States 100. Michelle is thinking about throwing her hat into the KneeKnacker Lottery. Craig conveniently disappeared when it was his turn to share his 2006 goals.

We reached the half way point and Ethelyn's one woman feel good aidstation after crossing a very slippery Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge in 2:34. Eight minutes faster than last year - not that I keep record or anything. After refueling and a pit stop we left at 2:42h.

Thankfully, our endomorphin high lasted through all of the return trip. Crawling up the Seymour Grind just does not get easier, but the downhill from there is exhilarating. We cut 5 min of my normal time from Seymour Mtn Road to Deep Cove. We were flying and even those nasty little climbs out of the gullies near the end couldn't dampen our spirits. Minus the time spent at the aidstation, we took 2:23h for the return trip, a negative split by 11 min. Yippee! And yes, I do realize that we lost altitude on the return trip...

Next week will see us do the second half of the Vancouver New Year's Fifty. Want to join us? Send me an email.

Run Report for 11 December 2004

The second installment of the Club Fat Ass Pure Satisfaction run is now complete. There were many firsts on this crisp and calm day, not the least of which was a record turnout of 25 runners and 1 happy dog. And first let me say that this is no ordinary running group. We all chose to get out of our nice warm beds on a chilly December 12th Sunday and brave the rough, hard trails of the Baden Powell for an 8:30 am start. The sky was clear, the temperature low and the car windshields were covered in heavy frost this morning.

We got started in good time right after the run briefing and group photo. My first order of business of course was to remind everyone how important it is that they take care of themselves. I knew there would be lots of ice on the route along with slippery roots and rocks and sure enough there was. And since we had seen way too much rain the few days prior (up until Friday night), there was also lots of water and mud. Sounds like a typical late autumn North Shore running day to me.

We had several firsts today: Bill Dagg came first with a monster performance. I saw Bill on the return trip at the power lines just before Lillooet Road and knew he was having a good day as he was well ahead of the rest of the pack. We also had 19 first timers to the event with both veterans and newbies to the BP Trail. I’m sure that Ellie, Bob, Chris, Desmond, Ann and Gottfried were all chasing one another for the whole run as they finished very close together.

One of our more notable firsts for the run were the three “under 20 year olds? that showed up for some fresh air and credits to their Kinesiology class at UBC. Nineteen year olds Mike, Mark and Nicola all did an abbreviated route up to the area past Seymour Road and around Old Buck then returned to Deep Cove. The best comment I heard from them was, “I like trail running, it’s not boring!? You’re absolutely right. Welcome to the club guys and hope to see you out again sometime.

Another first was that we had six returning runners. Bill, Kathy, Keith, Cheryl, Sibylle, and Patricia were not daunted by the dark and dreary weather from last year’s run. In fact, they all improved on their times quite significantly.

Many thanks from each of us go to Ethelyn for hanging in there at the Lynn Canyon Café as our major volunteer. She handed out ZonePerfect bars and Hammer Gels. Her smiling face was a welcome site especially since aid stations are a luxury for Club Fat Ass runs. Of course, we also had Ean and his clan of youngsters running around Lynn Canyon to cheer us on and welcome a few of the short distance runners to their finish.

I know that everyone had a great day and I’m thankful there are no reported injuries nor lost souls. Lots of us even found our way without difficulty to Honey’s after for yummy treats and hot coffee.

Keep up the running and join us on Dec. 11, 2005, for the next heart pounding adventure called Pure Satisfaction.

2003 - Pure Satisfaction Results - Year 1

Run Report for December 14, 2003

How do you describe the dedication and tenacity of athletes that love running the steep trails of the North Shore in the deep throws of winter? With words like tough, persistent, desire, determination, and phrases like "I enjoy a good challenge" and "never say die!". For the 20 people and 1 dog that came out for the inaugural Pure Satisfaction Run these words and more are accurate descriptors. I put this event together to celebrate both the desire and the ability of like-minded people to run the rough Baden Powell Trail under tough winter conditions and also for those runners to revel in the pure satisfaction of their own desire and determination.

I was surprised to find the darkness pervading the parking lot as I pulled in to Panorama Park at 07:30h. Not to mention the rain pelting and hardly a soul in site. But before I knew it, the rain subsided (for a while) and the runners were beginning to trickle in. Waivers were signed under cover of my Sienna's trunk door and brightness of my tiny flashlight. People were steadying themselves in the drissling weather and dismayed by the washrooms being still locked. Only one dog showed up but "Toro" seemed completely indifferent to the whole matter and I'm sure just wanted to get going with Cheryl.

The run briefing at 8:04 was necessarily brief due to the once again pelting precip. With instructions to the newbies about the BP signposts and some intense warning about the slippery roots, especially on the Hyannis to Riverside section, I sent the runners off into the somewhat lighter, but still wet, hills. The plan was to run from Deep Cove to the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge and the Lynn Canyon Café where our volunteers, Anne-Marie and Monty, would be with support and treats. Eventually, some would do just the trip to Lynn Canyon as planned and others would return to Deep Cove for the complete 24.2 Km trip. On the other hand, some would stumble and take alternate routes to make things more challenging for themselves. This was indeed one of the main risks on such a crooked trail but certainly rewarding if you could make it out under your own steam regardless. I know that Kathy and Mike never did see Lynn Canyon although they saw lots of other trails besides the BP. And Gord managed to slip into a taxi after emerging at the bottom of Lillooet Road. Thanks Gord for driving back to Lynn Canyon and letting me know what became of you.

There was apparently another, and much shorter, running event going on in the Seymour area as well as ours. There were some reports that their marshals were less than accommodating to our runners and for some reason felt they had exclusive use of the trails that day. Ahem.

At about 10:20h I sent our volunteers off on their own one way run to the Cove from Lynn Canyon and waited for a while with Ean and his 2 kids to see if more runners would show up. Ultimately Ean was able to meet up with his 3 jubilant 11.1 Km runners, Sibylle, Patricia, and Lesley. Along with Teryl who had arrived earlier, I then drove Lesley and myself back to the start line. And as we got out of my van there most of the other runners had either returned or were just coming in. Casey I think must have sprinted the whole way as he was patiently waiting in his car and thankfully the remaining wandering souls found their way back cold but in one piece.

Major congratulations to those that completed the full return trip on course, Casey, Bill, Scott, Laddie, Stewart, Debbie, Keith and Julie. They all knew the route very well or at least knew to hang out with other experienced BP types. Also big smiles for everyone else that did as they planned or simply came out for some great exercise one way or the other. I hope everyone brought some dry clothes to change into and was warmed up quickly ... I know it took some of you a while to warm up.

Après run, most of us squeezed into Honey Doughnuts for hot beverages and some well deserved food and reaffirmed why we all come out that day ... for some excitement and friendship. And for the pure satisfaction.

see you next year!

Craig

Background

The Big Picture

"Pure Satisfaction" was born in 2003. This trail run has been designed to challenge elite athletes who enjoy running long distances on technical trails as well as aspiring trail runners who want to play in the outdoors.

Why sit on the couch or lie in bed when you can be making valuable space for more seasonal food and drink? Impress your friends with your fitness tenacity and feel the pure satisfaction of logging those miles in mid December on a great trail!

Pure Satisfaction is held on the gentlest section of the Baden Powell trail in the north shore mountains above Vancouver. The Baden Powell Trail is one of the most popular and challenging trails in the greater Vancouver area and home to the infamous Knee Knackering North Shore Trail Run. But make no mistake, gentle or not, this route is rocky, rooty, hilly, and slippery at the best of times. It is your responsibility to be well prepared for cold and wet weather and to stick with people that know the route well.

Route

Pure Satisfaction has been designed to test your running skills on a fairly technical course. Conditions on race day could amplify the difficulty of the route. Participants should be confident in their uphill and downhill running abilities on rocky, rooty, muddy trails.

For those of you familiar with the Knee Knackering North Shore Trail Run, you’ll get to see this last leg of the route with relatively fresh legs. It is picturesque with rolling sections of ups and downs. If you’ve not done this run before, you’re in for a treat.

The Differences

This event follows the guidelines provided by Club Fat Ass for safe and successful, informal endurance sports "parties":

  • It is free for Club members
  • It is hosted by a Club member
  • It is small and informal.
  • Guests should come well prepared for cold and wet weather and the challenging terrain and not expect aid or course marking. They should expect to follow detailed written course instructions
  • Make sure to bring good trail shoes, gloves, hats, layers of clothing, and money (credit card and cash) for emergencies.
  • It is environmentally friendly. We aim to leave our route in better shape than it was before we passed though. Extra points are given for picking up garbage.
  • It is as much about the camaraderie as the competition.

Guests at the event download from the Internet directions based on natural and physical landmarks. As with orienteering, those who aren't familiar with the course will pause frequently to consult the written directions, giving a slight competitive advantage to those who have trained on it. Course directions are available year 'round on the agenda page of this website and we encourage everyone to enjoy the route as often as they please throughout the year.

Detailed questions and clarifications specific to this event are provided in the Pure Satisfaction FAQ.

Thanks!

FAQ

Q:   I've never done a trail run before. Is this a good place to start?
A:  It depends. Are you realistic about the distance you are thinking about running, well-prepared to run it and totally self-sufficient? Will you run with someone else if you don't know the route?  If so, go for it! If in doubt, pick a shorter distance or a route that is easier to follow so you don't get lost and kill yourself, and come back to set the course record next year.

Q:   Where is the start of the run?
A:  In Panorama Park at Deep Cove, North Vancouver, BC, Canada

Q:   How tough is the course?
A:  Tough question to answer! How far are you running? How fast? How well are you trained? There are lots of ups and downs and slippery sections on this course but it is very runnable.  If you can do a 3 to 4 hour run on rugged terrain you'll have no problem. And keep in mind it gets quite chilly in the Lynn Canyon section no matter the weather.

Q:   Is it easy to navigate the trail?
A:  No.  Bring the course directions but be prepared to stick closely to someone that knows the route. If you have not done much trail running in the Deep Cove and Lynn Canyon areas you will very easily get lost.

Q:   This event is free, but for Club Fat Ass members only. How do I get into the club?
A:   Runners, walkers, hikers, triathletes, adventure racers, mountain bikers and anyone else interested in having fun in the great outdoors is welcome and can register online for a nominal fee.

Q:  Can I wait until the last minute and join at the start?
A:  Yes.  But, last minute registration makes it very difficult to organize and coordinate the event. You will not be allowed to take out an annual Club Fat Ass membership on the day-of-event, so you won't get a cool t-shirt.

Q:  It's a free world. What's to stop me from just running the course.
A:  Nothing... in fact, we strongly encourage you to run the course often in training! Furthermore, you won't be allowed into future events until you come clean with past membership dues.

Q: What is the 'Rule of the Trail'?
A: If you pack it in, you can pack it out. (That means don't you dare litter!) Leave nothing but your footprints on the course. We strongly encourage you to pick up any trash you find along the trail and to present it to the Event Host at the end of the run.

Q: What if I have to heed the call of nature.
A: There are washrooms at the start in Panorama Park and also at the point where we cross Seymour Road.  There are some at the turn around in Lynn Canyon Park on the other side of the suspension bridge and then of course you will eventually reach the first two on your return trip.  If you have to go en-route please make sure to step to the side and bury anything that needs burying.

Q:  What should I bring on the run?
A:  Whatever you figure you will need given the weather, the distance you propose to run, your physical fitness on the day and your plans for after the run.

Weather. Click here for a local forecast

Distance. Since you are an experienced trail runner, you should know what you need. Water and food is an issue, so we recommend you carry at least 2 large bottles of fluid and plenty of trail chow.

Fitness. Since you are an experienced trail runner, you should know what you are capable of. If in doubt, take it easy and run a shorter distance.

Good Luck!
