Despite the detailed description and warnings (e.g. If in doubt, read the directions!!), people will get lost on the course. Consider it a rite of passage.
This is an informal, environmentally-friendly event. Be sure to print this agenda and the course description and bring them with you on event day as there are no flags, marshals or other directions. (I recommend you put them in a plastic baggie, as they will otherwise surely turn to mush.) Better yet, train on the course and bring the directions.

Saturday Course Description |
Start at Brennan Park Recreation Centre. Run north out of parking lot on the gravel trail that runs along the east side, merge left onto Centennial Way and go through the underpass. Follow the sidewalk to Government Rd, turn right and go over the bridge. Immediately after the bridge turn right onto the dike, and then right again down to the river and on to a trail that will take you back toward Hwy 99. Veer right to cross over a foot bridge. |
|
3.0k |
After passing under Hwy 99 continue until the open gravel area under the power lines. Turn left, go over a small bridge, and proceed onto the Rotary trail which parallels Hwy 99. Carefully cross Mamquam Road and continue on the trail in front of shopping centre. After passing under a pedestrian overpass, turn right (with a hotel on your left), and up Diamond Rd. |
Go left on Garibaldi Way, then take the next right (Parkway Rd). In about 200m you will see a trail between houses marked Coho Park. Follow the trail for a short distance and take a right turn to cross a small bridge. Then go left and start climbing. The trail goes up and down some small bridges and then becomes more technical. |
|
7.2k |
Stay left to follow a creek for a ways. Cross the creek beside the broken log bridge on Trestle trail, then continue up into open scrub veering left. Ignore a couple of major intersections and then turn right off the main trail onto Lumberjacks trail (about 20m before a major gravel road intersection). Follow it until you come to Perth Drive. Turn left and go up the paved road. Water is available at the top of the street. |
11.5k |
Go through the yellow gate. At the first fork in about 100m, go left along a crest trail. (If it's clear, enjoy views of the Tantalus mountain range!) Take care on steep stony downhill. Continue straight. There will be a couple of short hills. Ignore the two turn-offs to the left. As you approach trees, the main trail bends right, but ignore this and fork left onto thinner trail into trees (Jack’s trail). Climb gradually for 2.5k to Alice Lake (water & washrooms available). |
Fork left and run to the west of Alice Lake. Pass behind the picnic tables, cross the small bridge near the washrooms and turn left onto the paved road. Continue towards Hwy 99. Just before a steep downhill, turn left onto single track. Descend a short, steep hill and then immediately turn right onto Wonderland. If you cross a bridge, you've gone too far. This trail will take you back out to the paved road. Climb back up Alice Lake Rd and past the campground entrance on your right. Fork right on the gravel road just before the paved road ends at the park office. |
|
18.6k |
Pass the yellow gate and climb gradually for ~3k staying on the main trail until the park sign for Fawn Lake. Go left and left again on to a broad trail which narrows to become the Bob McIntosh trail. There is an outhouse just after the turn. |
22.4k |
As you come into a recently cleared area, go left at a mini crossroads to run the Dead End Loop. Follow this loop until the first fork in the trail near the river, then go left. This will bring you back to the power lines. At the clearing, ignore the old, steep Rock & Roll hill on the left, and instead take the new trail on the right that comes out to a point just beyond the top of Rock & Roll. |
25.0k |
A long gradual downhill section starts here, alternating between the broader Mashiter Trail and several single tracks to the right. Powerlines mark the general route in this section. After about 400m pick up the winding Rob’s Corners to right of main trail which brings you out by a shelter near a yellow gate. Turn right and immediately left onto another winding trail: Cliff’s Corners. This brings you back onto the Mashiter trail. Turn right and proceed downhill for ~400m. The trail comes to a Y, with the left side becoming rocky and going downhill. Take the right side instead (Ray's Cafe trail), and then right back onto the main trail. |
Within 100m, make a sharp right up a wooden ramp onto Tracks from Hell trail (marshy, but on boardwalks). Follow for 700m to Edith Lake. At the four-way junction, take the trail farthest on the left onto Mike's Loop, climbing gradually through the trees for about 1k, and then more steeply for another 1k. At the T-junction, go right onto a flatter narrow trail for about 1k. Veer left onto Entrail. Just past a small lake cross a small pond to the left on a wiggly bridge. Go uphill on switchbacks and then left onto Marc my Word trail, then down steep, technical trail to a T-junction (take care in this section). Turn left onto Border Patrol which leads eventually to the Mashiter trail. |
|
31.7k |
Turn right on Mashiter and proceed to a four-way junction. Take the middle fork for 200m, and then turn right by an upright pipe onto Roller Coaster, a single track with great views of the Chief and Howe Sound. Stay left at the first junction and downhill on narrow trail. As trees get bigger, the trail turns dusty/rocky and forks right. Go carefully down the hill and out onto the paved road of Perth Drive (water available). |
34.0k |
Turn left and continue down Perth Drive to the stop sign at The Boulevard. Turn left and cross the bridge, then immediately right and on to a dirt road. Stay on this for ~1k, including a springy wood chip section, until you reach a wide gravel road (Mamquam Road). |
Here we turn right and home instead of left and up to the University, as we would on race day. Proceed down Mamquam Rd to the golf course, then left onto the trail that follows the dike between the river and the golf course. This eventually leads back out to the gravel section which we crossed earlier. Go left and back into the woods until the Hwy 99 bridge. Climb up to the bridge, cross it, and follow the path that leads down to Centennial Way on your left. Finish at Brennan. |
Warning: There are many minor junctions where you could go off course. As a general rule, stay on the major route. If you can, try to run with someone who knows the course. If you get lost... no whining! Good luck and have fun!

Sunday Course Description |
|
|
3.4k |
Start at Brennan. Run north out of the parking lot on the gravel trail that runs along the east side and toward the Centennial Way underpass. Take the path to the right of the underpass that leads up to the bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge take a sharp right and then left on the trail below. Continue straight on this trail through the open gravel area, and stay close to the river. The trail will wind around to the left and come out at the golf course clubhouse. |
15.0k |
Turn right and take the road uphill. There's a short section of paved road at the university but all in all, about 5k of gravel road. Go left onto Ring Creek North Forest Service Rd (large sign). This will climb gradually through some slightly overgrown clear cuts for about 2.5k. Do not take any of the roads to the left. Just before the SORCA bike kiosk go left and down Pseudo Tsuga trail. At the gravel road go left for a few metres and right on to trail again. At the end of this trail, take the trail on your right over the creek and down the steep, rocky Phil and Cam's. This will take you down to the gravel road just above the university. Go back down Mamquam Rd to the intersection at the parking lot where we turned right yesterday, and turn left. |
17.4k |
The trail goes steeply down and crosses the Ring Creek Falls bridge. Continue straight on fairly flat trail for about 1k (ignore right turn). At top of small hill, fork right and steeply down. (Water is available in this section at a kiosk on your left). After a short hill, continue on main trail and then down a steep black-stoned road. Cross Powerhouse Bridge and up the slope through a yellow gate. At the next intersection go sharply right. |
21.7k |
Follow the trail downhill. After about 75m, go left off the main trail and after a short climb, dip down to a clearing where you pick up the Far Side trail on the left as you enter Crumpit Woods (a new metal sign actually labels it Farther Side). After climbing for approximately 800m, turn left up the Farther Side trail. This area is a roller coaster of single track with many side trails. Stay on the main trail. At a 4-way trail crossing, ignore the closed wider trail to the left (boggy S&M connector) and instead go straight across onto a narrower marked loop trail. This trail comes back onto S&M before forking right to another similar loop back to the main S&M trail…a fast, gentle downslope. On emerging from the trees, turn right. |
|
Continue along the hydro corridor uphill on the gravel trail. Go right onto the short 3 Virgins spur trail, which leads back to the main trail. At the top of the ridge (with a good view of the finish area), go left onto 7 Stitches trail. Caution...there are many distracting side trails! Keep right and uphill for the next 1k. At the next T intersection, turn right onto Summer's Eve trail. After climbing gradually for another 1k turn right on reaching a wooden staircase. In the next 800m, you will pass several rock climbing walls. Watch for climbers. Go left back into the woods, up a short set of stairs, down some switchbacks, then down a large wooden staircase. |
At the junction with the wide Smoke Bluff Trail turn right. Follow this for 1k and then turn right at a T intersection and down to the Climber’s Parking Lot. Cross over Logger’s Lane (paved road) and enter wooded trail. Cross the new wide trail and at the next fork, go right. Proceed straight, crossing over Finch Drive, towards the soccer field lights. The finish line will be to the left (West) of the Rec Centre. Congratulations. You are done! |

Report: There was much activity at Brennan Rec Centre in Squamish on Saturday: The Test of Metal bike race, the BC Highland Gathering, and of course the Back-to-Back training runs for the Stormy trail ultra. Seven of us ran the Saturday route, which included the first 45% of the Stormy course. Some were training for Stormy. Tom and Duncan were also getting ready for Transrockies this summer. Jason Eads took his training seriously enough to fly out from St Louis, Missouri and train on the course. Timing this morning was perfect as we ran down Perth drive just in time to watch the first few hundred of the 1000 bike racers go by. Another highlight was hearing all the bagpipers of the Highland Gathering practice as we finished the run.
Sunday we picked up where we left off and did the rest of the Stormy course except for Nine Mile Hill. Imre and Wendy Montgomery (Stormy race director) came out and made sure that everyone ran with someone who knew how to navigate the many trails that make up the course. A big thanks to both of you! And thanks to everyone else who came out for either or both days.

Report:
We couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather for the second year of the Back to Back STORMY training run. We had a great group of participants show up from as far away as Ottawa, Bellingham and Victoria. Some were training for the STORMY 50 or 100, some for other events like the Mont Blanc 100 and pacing at Badwater, and some showed up just to enjoy running the great trails Squamish has to offer. (I was there just to see if I could still run after five weeks of a femur injury). Most did the prescribed course, which totaled 68 km for the weekend. A couple added extra mileage: Ward ran back to the start after the first km or two to retrieve his new Garmin from on top of his car, and Thierry (an alternate for the recent 100k world championships) ran at least an extra 5k by running back and forth between the two groups of runners. Participants spotted one bear cub and I came across one large black bear. But alas, no cougar sighting (I’ve seen lots of bears on the trails, but no big cats). However there was one animal attack: Imre’s dog got a little too excited, jumped up on him, and drew blood! Thanks for coming out everyone. And thank you Imre for stashing water along the course and guiding the "chase pack". And thanks also to our sponsors (Trail Runner, Kinesys, Kintec) who provided the prizes to hand out after the event.

Sunday Runners (Left to Right): Rick, Steve, Carlos, Tim, Rea, Bill and Dave
Saturday Runners (Left to Right): Melody, Jamie, JP, Rea, Carlos, Baldwin, Julie, Sukhi, Bill, Dave and Steve.
Well, I volunteered to host my first CFA event, and got off to a great start by not showing up! An inflamed tendon, (probably something to do with completing two 100 km races last month) meant I was happy to accept Bill Dagg’s offer to lead the Stormy training run Saturday. Thanks Bill! Eleven showed up including Carlos from Victoria, and Julie all the way from Seattle. Julie ended her run a bit early after a fall required her to visit a clinic for some stitches. Baldwin and Carlos decided to run a bit extra, after missing a couple of key turnoffs, and managed to find other parts of the course to deviate from. They ran 6:33. The rest ran 38 km, with the first runner coming in at 4:11.
I showed up Sunday for part two of the Brick, a 28 km run taking in the rest of the Stormy course minus the Nine Mile Hill loop. Bill Dagg and Rick Arikado finished first at 3:23, with the rest of us not too far behind. I ran about half this with the six runners who did the run, missing out on the bear sighting. The tendon flared up and I discovered that hopping on one leg down technical trails doesn’t work too well. Rea, a nurse, was kind enough to provide an ice pack at the finish which was greatly appreciated. By the end, the sun had come out, which made for a pleasant drive back to Vancouver after the usual post-event party at the Howe Sound Brew Pub.
Please add photos of the day to Flickr and the CFA Flickr group, then tag with TheBrick and The Brick2008 and ClubFatAssEvents.
Here is Carlos' video of the weekend:
This past week-end Ms.J and I, went to Squamish to take part in a training camp over two days. This kind of back-to-back session is know as a "Brick". A group of "fatassers" had planned to run. The first part one day , and the second part the next. This would be on a 50 mile course of an up coming race , the "Stormy 50 mile and 100 mile Ultra marathon". I am registered to run the 100 miler so I figured that it would be an ideal chance to familiarise myself with the terrain. That it was! I ended up running my 10 hours per week of running in two days. ILTS!
23 June 2007 - 7 Starter (Wendy, Tracy and Ryan are missing on the starter photo)
In 2007 the Stormy Brick was not yet established as a scheduled event. Please find below the results of the Beyond Nine Mile event, which morphed into The Brick in 2008.
Firstly, thanks to everyone who came out and participated in the first running of “Beyond 9-Mile”.
We were lucky as the rain held off for most of the run with the exception of a few sprinkles here and there.
Congratulations to Tracy Garneau who not only ran 18 km of the CFA event, but headed up to Whistler and won the women’s division of Comfortably Numb on Sunday.
Tim, Rick and Gilles showed how tough they truly are by completing the entire route including the long pull up 9-mile hill. All three men and Tracy are signed up to compete in the STORMY 100 mile solo in August.
Ryan Conroy, who was suffering from a bit of an injury managed to finish more than 18km of the course. I believe Ryan has signed up for the Canadian Death Race August 4-7 in
I managed to convince Maureen to join me on the 15km course. We had a great time as we chatted and enjoyed the sites and sounds of the trail.
Both Maureen and Ryan received bonus points for their collection of garbage along the route. Maureen found some shell casings and Ryan found an array of items during his run.
We finished off the day with a lunch at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub.

Leading up to the first Stormy 100 mile race in 2007, race director Wendy Montgomery went to an extraordinary amount of work in organizing a series of training runs on the course--complete with course markings. To help share the load it was decided that the CFA would organize a few training runs. Since Baldwin has his "Bonkfest" which consists of repeats of the Nine Mile Hill loop, I decided that on this weekend we would do everything else on the course except that section.
Please contact us if you would like to support the "Beyond Nine Miles" run in any way.
Our hope is to make this event totally self-supporting. In other words, do all of the organization beforehand and also participate. This would be an impossible dream without a lot of behind the scenes help. Many thanks to:
Paul Cubbon and Ean Jackson for their help with the coure descriptions
Rick Arikado and Tim Wiens for their help with measuring and mapping the course when it was still the Beyond Nine Mile
Kintec Footlabs Thank you for the awesome recognition prizes. |
|
TrailRunner: Thank you for the 2 gift subscriptions to your popular magazine as draw prize. Also for offering members of Club Fat Ass a special discounted subscription price
KINeSYS: Thanks for the assortment of body and sun care products to keep all participants protected from the elements.

Want to help next year? Please send a short email note with your thoughts. |
Q: | I don't want to run, but I'd like to help. What might I do? |
A: | You're a hero! If you can make the time, we can find you something to do as part of the event crew. Some thoughts at crew tasks. |
Q: | It's the weekend. Responsibility or work of any ilk does not appeal to me any more than having a root canal would. Is there any other reason why I would want to participate in this event? |
A: | Sure. The whole objective of the day is to make it to the pub. You can always start there. |
Q: | If I decide to run, what should I bring? |
A: | Whatever you'd normally wear for a run of the distance you select to run given the conditions of the day. Don't forget to print out the run route directions, directions to the start and to bring a bathing suit if you plan to use the rec center |
Q: | Are there aid stations? Can I have a beer en route? |
A: | We recommend you come prepared to run without external aid. There may be aid stations, but only if your family and friends step forward and offer to organize them. (See aid.) Since this is an 'unofficial' event, there are no rules as to what you may or may not eat or drink en route. |
Q: | What can I win? |
A: | Nothin. Fastest man and woman TO FINISH THE COURSE get bragging rights. All participants and times go up on the web for posterity sake. |
Q: | How tough is the course? |
A: | Tough question to answer! How fast? How well are you trained? It's not a KneeKnacker, but there are hills and technical terrain... |
Q: | Do I really need to print off the course instructions and bring them with me? |
A: | Yes. Without the detailed instructions or an intimate familiarity with the route, you're almost certain to get lost |
Q: | This event is free, but for Club Fat Ass members only. How do I get into the club? |
A: | There is no hazing ceremony like the Hash House Harriers! Runners, walkers, hikers, triathletes, adventure racers, mountain bikers and anyone else interested in having fun in the great outdoors is welcome and can register online for a nominal fee. |
Q: | Can I wait until the last minute and join at the start? |
A: | Yes, but we prefer you don't. Last minute registration makes it very difficult to organize and coordinate the event. Besides, we only take day-of-event registrants on run day which means you'll have to spend more $ if you want the cool Club Fat Ass t-shirt. |
Q: | It's a free world. What's to stop me from just running the course. |
A: | Nothing...in fact, we encourage you to run the course often in training! We prefer that you do not 'bandit' the course on event day, however. If you insist, please don't take any of the aid intended for members. You will not get recognition in the results or be eligible for any draw prizes and you'll have to wear a black patch over one eye at the pub. Furthermore, you won't be allowed into future events until you come clean with past membership dues. |
Q: | What if I get lost? |
A: | You shouldn't get lost, but bring a cell phone, just in case or ask a mountain biker |
Q: | Do I get credit for any time I spend off-course? |
A: | Are you kidding? If you do find an obvious mistake in the course directions, point it out to Wendy at the party for a free beer! |
Q: | Couldn't you mark the course like just about every other running race I've ever been in? It's a pain to pause and read instructions. |
A: | Our aim is to be different than every other running race you've ever been in! We don't want to put chalk/flour on the ground, hang surveyor tape in the trees, paint rocks, put up signs or glow sticks or do anything that might leave a trace of the race. Besides, it slows down the faster runners. |
Q: | What is the 'Rule of the Trail'? |
A: | If you pack it in, you can pack it out. (That means don't you dare litter!) Leave nothing but your footprints on the trail. We strongly encourage you to pick up any trash you find along the trail and to present it to Wendy at the party. There may be a recognition award for the person who packs out more than they packed in. |
Q: | What should I bring on run day? |
A: | Whatever you figure you will need given the weather, the route description, your physical fitness on the day and your plans for after the run. |
Fitness. Since you are an experienced trail runner, you should know what you are capable of. If in doubt, take it easy and do run with someone else
Après run. Bring a change of clothes so you'll have something dry.
Q: | I am supposed to be self-sufficient because there is no aid provided. Can I get a friend to come out and give me food and drink along the route? |
A: | Absolutely! In fact, it would be nice if your friend were to help everyone. Please have your friends and family members contact us and we will do all we can to insure that they have fun, as well. |
Q: | Can I bring my friends and family to the post event party even if they didn't run or volunteer? Do they have to be Club Fat Ass members? |
A: | Friends and family are absolutely welcome and no, they do not have to be Club Fat Ass members. Please be sure to specify how many guests you will bring with you on your registration form. |
Q: | Are there any trophies, prizes or other hardware or freebies? |
A: | If you assume there's no aid, no course marking, no t-shirt, no enthusiastic spectators and no prizes or freebies of any sort, you might be pleasantly surprised. Best you plan to show up at the pub! |
Q: | How accurate are the course meaurings? |
A: | Pretty close. The route follows the Stormy Trail Race course. |
Q: | When will the 'official' results be available? |
A: | We hope to have the results up on the website within 24 hours of the finisher banquet. We will also distribute the results to major local and national ultrarunning communities. |
