Galbraith Mountain Tour - 2009 Results

19 December 2009 - Starter Photo

The promised views were shrouded in fog, but the rains held off for the 14 runners who participated in the Galbraith Mountain Tour.  Fueled by donuts provided by Daniel's mom the "slow" group was only 45min behind the fasties.  Daniel's Event Report will be posted soon.

Event Report: What an amazing day to run in the snow with a great group of new and old friends. Even with the weather threatening to turn us all into popsicles seven Fat ass's braved the cold ( -11c ) to come out and enjoy an incredible run with an equally incredible view on Galbraith. Timing couldn't have been any better as I look out the window now and see cloudy sky's and another 4 inches of snow on the ground and it's still snowing.

One of my Good running friends Chuck Snyder came out to lead the faster group and help guide the Gang though the maze of snow covered trails as he has done the last 3 years. Thanks Chuck!

I enjoyed the day running with Jess and Claudia and was grateful for the lead group breaking trail in the 12 inches of snow blanketing the ground.

I can say with certainty that the fat ass gang covered the most ground on the mtn that day. Since the only other food prints were all on the lower Part of the Mtn. Thanks everyone for coming out. and to the ones who missed out please feel free to get a hold of me and we will go for a run on a better day -  though I don't think there could have been a better day of snow running. Check out Members in Action to see my photos. I know there's some more photo's out there please add them to flickr and the club fatass group or email them to me. GPS info http://connect.garmin.com/activity/1574842 Thanks Mike

Even with weather predictions calling for snow and freezing rain the eleven people that braved the border were in for a great surprise. Over night the clouds had moved on and the sun had come out to join us for the day. Amazingly everyone made it on time even with a few border problems and a miscommunication with the five minute rule. In fact most were early and made for a good chance to chat in the sun before the start. We were running right on time for the start and after getting the starter photo we were off.

Thankfully two of the local runners Ron and Chuck showed up to help guide us up down and through the mountain. We all tried to stay together as we made our way over down fall of the first half of the course. It was still cold in the woods and each time I caught up with the group I would see Dom standing around shivering good thing it wasn’t raining too. At the top we were greeted with the view I had hoped for and some sun to keep the could at bay. It was here that we decided that we would brake up into groups permanently for the second half of the run. Ron lead the first group Chuck lead the second and I followed up in the rear to catch and one who may have fallen behind.

We then all made our way down the twisty single track which at times meant that you could see runners from more than a half a mile away. This made for some good photo opportunities. The rout took us past a little log cabin and through the clump of trees named Arsenio after the 90’s talk show host with the spiked hair. The whole time I was wandering if the groups in front of us were staying on course. But that was laid to rest when at about three quarter mark some mountain bikers stopped us and asked if there was and ultra going on. This was good news as it meant the other groups were right on course. Not knowing where we were I heard a few “are we there yet“. But once we came out onto the main road we all knew that it was just a few miles back through the park and to the finish. The day had been long but the weather was perfect and when the last of us crossed the finish the other groups where there to cheer us in.

After the run a bunch of us headed down to stuff our face with some Mexican food and recap the day. I think at this point everyone saw that is was a good Idea that we had all stayed together in groups as the blow down and the numerous hidden turns would have surly made for a long lost day on the mountain for the solo runner.

Thank you all for showing up for the first running of the Galbraith Mountain Tour. I had a great time showing off the amazing trail system out my back door.

Daniel Probst

PS.: If you were in the first or second group and know who you were running with would you please email me the names and your time.  Thank you

The Galbraith Mountain Tour was created to showcase some of Bellingham Washington’s best trails. After running Vancouver BC’s rugged North Shore trails over the past few seasons I decided it was time for a club run in my back yard. I’ve had the great opportunity to get to know some good athletes and make some new friends and would like to repay that with new trails and stories. I would also like this to be a group run so that everyone can have time to share there stories from this past season. And mostly so no one gets lost on the mountain.

FAQ - Galbraith Mountain Tour

Event Home | Registration |Agenda |Course | Results
Backgrounder | Thanks! | FAQContact

Q: If I decide to run, what should I bring?
A: Bring whatever you'd normally wear for a run of the distance you select to run given the conditions of the day. Water and food for the trail. Money for showers and change of clothes. if coming from Canada you need your travel documents and out of country insurance.

Q: Are there aid stations?
A: We recommend you come prepared to run without external aid.

Q: What can I win?
A: Sorry, this isn't a run for glory.  This run is meant to be a group event to appreciate club members and a good year of running.

Q: I've never done a trail run before. Is this a good place to start?
A: If you can run 15 miles then you will be fine.

Q: How tough is the course?
A: It's not the Northshore of Vancouver, but it does have a fair amount of elevation and medium trail difficulty.

Q: This event is free, but for Club Fat Ass members only. How do I get into the club?
A: There is no hazing ceremony like the Hash House Harriers! Runners, walkers, hikers, triathletes, adventure racers, mountain bikers and anyone else interested in having fun in the great outdoors is welcome and can register online for a nominal fee.

Q: Can I wait until the last minute and join at the start?
A: Yes, but we prefer you don't. Last minute registration makes it very difficult to organize and coordinate the event. Besides, we only take day-of-event registrants on run day which means you'll have to spend more $ if you want the cool Club Fat Ass t-shirt.

Q: It's a free world. What's to stop me from just running the course.
A: Nothing...in fact, we encourage you to run the course often in training! We prefer that you do not 'bandit' the course on event day, however. If you insist, please don't take any of the aid intended for members. You will not get recognition in the results or be eligible for any draw prizes and you'll have to wear a black patch over one eye at the pub. Furthermore, you won't be allowed into future events until you come clean with past membership dues.

Q: What if I get lost?
A: You shouldn't get lost, but bring a cell phone, just in case or ask a mountain biker

Q: Couldn't you mark the course like just about every other running race I've ever been in? It's a pain to pause and read instructions.
A: Who said it was a race?  It's a fun run, just follow the group

Q: What is the 'Rule of the Trail'?
A: If you pack it in, you can pack it out. (That means don't you dare litter!) Leave nothing but your footprints on the trail. We strongly encourage you to pick up any trash you see. There may be a recognition award for the person who packs out more than they packed in.

Q: What if I have to heed the call of nature.
A: There are washrooms at the start/finish just head to the end of the parking lot and take the trail down to the restrooms.

Q: Can I bring my friends and family to the post event party even if they didn't run or volunteer? Do they have to be Club Fat Ass members?
A: Friends and family are absolutely welcome and no, they do not have to be Club Fat Ass members. Please be sure to specify how many guests you will bring with you on your registration form.

Q: Are there any trophies, prizes or other hardware or freebies?
A: If you assume there's no aid, no course marking, no t-shirt, no enthusiastic spectators and no prizes or freebies of any sort, you might be pleasantly surprised. Best you plan to show up at the pub!

Q: When will the 'official' results be available?
A: We hope to have the results up within 24 hours of the finisher banquet. We will also distribute the results to major local and national ultrarunning communities.

Our hope is to make this event totally self-supporting. In other words, do all of the organization beforehand and also participate. This would be an impossible dream without a lot of behind the scenes help. Thank you Sibylle.

Thank you to everyone that braved the elements to come down and participate and making the first running of the Galbraith Mountain Tour a success.

I would also like to thank Fairhaven runners for donating the draw prizes and being a great part of the local running community.
