2009 November - Foolish Gerbil 100 Mile Trail Run - Results
A determined group of 8 runners started out at 9:00 am to run a loop or two ...or 16 at the Foolish Gerbil 100 Mile Run. The air was crisp but the skies were dry for a moment and at least for the first three loops it never rained hard. By the 3rd loop the eight runners had picked up 5 more Foolish Gerbils.
Claudia went AWOL after two laps. Pushpa's friend Harold who had never run more than 10km was seen on his 2nd loop and Wendy Montgomery, Caroline King, Neil Ambrose and Sibylle Tinsel called it a day after 3 loops or 30km - just in time before the forecasted heavy downpours hit. Lorie, Karl, Kirsten, Barry, Tim, Pushpa and John pressed on.
While we started in pretty decent running weather, the conditions deteriorated as the day wore on and by late afternoon it had become wet, cold, miserable, nasty and generally unpleasant.
Tim was experimenting with nutrition and discovered that he can run 50 K on just water. Hopefully giving him some insight to solving the stomach issues that plague him as he gets up into the 80 K range.
Lorie ran 50 miles in a great time of 9:23 as she racked up another 50 miler in her quest to complete 50 - 50 mile runs in her 50th year. She added an extra 5 K just...well, just because. Not bad for an old chick.
I had the pleasure of running with Pushpa and Kirsten for most of the first 60 K. Pushpa entertained us with some of her adventures which made the miles fly by.
Kirsten had not officially declared that she was going to do 100 mile event, but came all prepared anyway. We were running well until the 7th loop when the Piriformis/hip injury she sustained at Hundred in the Hood flared up again. Stretching couldn't resolve the issue so she wisely decided to call it a day before doing more long-term damage. Thanks for the company Kirsten.
Gilles was waiting for me with a Big Mac and three donuts at the end of my 8th loop. I love you man! Thanks for coming out in such appalling conditions. The food helped, but by this time the wet and cold had done it's damage. Many of the puddles on the course had turned into small lakes and it was impossible to go around them without bushwhacking. The dry gloves I had put on were soaked before the end of one loop. Even with four layers of clothes and running the hills I couldn't get warm. At 110 K I became concerned I was heading into hypothermia territory and decided that was enough. It was very disappointing. Our pace was good and I had 8 1/2 hours to do the last 51 K to get in under 24 hours. I guess I have some unfinished business with that trail.
Thanks to everyone who came out. It seems that you don't have to be a Fool to be a fool. Did I mention that the weather was somewhat unpleasant?

2009 January - Foolish Gerbil Twenty-Four Hour Trail Run - Results
January 17/18 - 17 starters
The biggest difference between gerbils and fools is that gerbils have enough sense to get off the wheel when it gets tedious.
Thirteen would-be gerbils toed the line at Pacific Spirit Park on Saturday morning. Four more started at various other times. All had their goals; some ambitious, others more sensible. Most reached their goals; a few came away somewhat humbled.
The course presented something of a challenge. The open areas, especially the Imperial and Heron trails, were covered in snow that was always difficult and sometimes impossible to run on. It was soft and slippery in the relative warmth of the day. During the night the footprints created earlier froze and became holes that made extremely uneven footing. Day-time temperatures were relatively mild and comfortable for running. However, during the night it was quite variable: cold when the sky was clear and bone chilling when the fog rolled in. At 6 AM it was –1C.
Shawn and Tony came from south of Seattle to join us, leaving there at 4 AM. Both are training for the McNaughton 150 Mile Race in April. They kept up a strong, steady pace and lapped the two Fools in the middle of the night. Eventually the cold took its toll, however, and they retreated to their car to warm up. But hey, this is Canada -- it gets cold eh! Tony recovered and did a lap by himself. Shawn joined him for the next lap, but even two caffeine pills couldn’t keep her awake so she went back to the car to sleep. Gentleman Tony couldn’t let a young lady sleep alone in the wilds of Vancouver and joined her.
Lorie and Barry took a 2 PM start because Lorie had to teach a morning Pilates class in Kelowna. They ran very strong, but also succumbed to the cold. They did get out again, but the last time the Fools saw them they were fast asleep in their car.
Kirsten, Wendy joined the Fools and others for the early loops, but had to leave for other, more interesting, commitments. Kirsten came back in the afternoon for another couple of loops. Wendy returned in the late evening with donuts and ran another loop. Kirsten returned again at around 6 AM bringing more donuts. We love you ladies!
During the cold, dark hours the Fools’ pace was pretty much reduced to a death march, but with Kirsten’s arrival and her gentle but insistent “encouragement” the pace quickened. Lap 15 ended at about 23 ½ hours. That was good enough for the Fools, but Kirsten would have none of that so they grudgingly followed her out for an out-and-back to get them to the 24-hour mark. They returned a bit early, but no amount of “encouragement” on Kirsten’s part could get them to go out again.
Thanks to all who came out. We wish we could have spent some time with each of you, but some were too fast. Others, perhaps, just avoided the Fools.

2009 January - Foolish Gerbil 50km Run - Results
January 25 - 10 starters
It was a great day weather-wise for this run, cold but sunny in the morning, warming to a comfortable temperature in the afternoon. The only disappointment was the amount of snow still on the Imperial and Heron trails, although there was certainly less than the previous week. Thanks to Kirsten for dragging along a couple of Fools again. And to Chad for the donuts. This is getting to be a bad habit we like.

2008 December - Foolish Gerbil Twelve Hour Trail Run - Results
December 6 - 14 starters
There were not as many participants as in the six hour version of this run. I'm don't know if that was because of the ridiculously early start time, the weather or perhaps some of the runners in the previous version have simply concluded that running with Fools is not really an experience that they want to repeat.
It was a treat to have some out-of-town friends join us.
Van "Pigtails" Phan drove up in the morning from Maple Valley, south of Seattle. For those of you who don't know Van, she is a phenomenally prolific marathon and ultra runner. In 2006 she ran 53 marathons/ultras and won the 2006 Trail Runner Magazine Ultra Runner Series with 1462 points. That was 561 points more than her nearest female competitor and 888 more than the nearest male. In 2006 she also kicked my butt at the Lost Soles 100 Mile Race, taking first place in the women's division and fifth place overall. She finished 33 minutes ahead of me, a humbling experience.
Lorie Alexander and Barry Hopkins drove from Kelowna, risking their lives on the Coquihalla Highway to join us. Both of their names appear frequently in Ultra race results. Lorie recently completed two 100 miler races on consecutive weekends.
Claudia Bullington did 43 K and qualified to become a Marathon Maniacs member. She joins at least one other CFA member, Gilles Barbeau, in that distinction. Being a Maniac beats being a Fool I suppose, although Gilles seems to be hedging his bets.
Kirsten Ramage came out and ran 30 K in the morning and returned in the late afternoon to drag one Fool along for the last 20.5 K if his run. Thanks Kirstin, I really appreciate your help.
Thanks to all who braved the mud and somewhat cold and miserable weather. Stay tuned for details of the next event in the Foolish Gerbil series, a 24 hour run on the weekend of January 17/18.

2008 November - Foolish Gerbil Six Hour Trail Run - Results
23 November 2008 - 22 Starters
It was great to see so many new faces at the start of the run. I regret that I wasn’t able to run and chat with all of you. It was especially nice to see an “old” face that has recently been missing in action. Gilles has been out with sciatica and made his CFA comeback in style, running five big loops and one small one for a total of 51.5 K in 5:53. Welcome back Gilles. Kirsten came out intending to run just one or two loops, but did a bit of bonus distance on the first loop and then got connected with a couple of Fools. She did a total of 52 K in 5:53.
Gilles and myself decided to do the second loop in reverse because we got tired of only seeing the backsides of the speedy kids: Chad, Ran and Rick. The scenery didn't improve. However, this was a learning experience because we discovered that doing the big loop counter-clockwise was more enjoyable.
It seems that quite a number of people put in some bonus distance. That was in most cases a result of the foolproof directions being somewhat vague for the section between the Camoson and the intersection of the Salish and Clinton trails. We will fix that for the Twelve Hour version. Our apologies to all. Please read the motto. As an accountant I insist on accuracy, so I’ve added an extra 1 K to those who indicated that they did a bit extra but didn’t know the distance.
I hope to see all of you again in a couple of weeks for the twelve hour version.

Foolish Gerbil 6 Hour Run
Running in circles is not necessarily my kind of thing, but when the motley Fools posted the Flash Foolish Gerbil 6 Hour run, proposing a 10km loop 6h run in Pacific Spirit Park, it fit nicely into my plans to run a longish stretch on the Vancouver New Year's Day 50 course. Others seemed to think along the same line, as pre-event saw a flurry of online activity: Rick posted a map, old timers mused about the opportunity and newbies committed to join us for a loop or two.
The morning dawned crisp and clear, with amazing views of orange glowing Mount Baker on the eastern horizon as I was making my way over Lions Gate Bridge to the start in Pacific Spirit Park. Surprisingly, I was met by a large group of keener's already assembling at the park center... and I thought I could snooze a bit in the warm car before setting out. It was great to see so many new faces brave enough to join some more or less serious gerbils.
After greeting everybody and making sure we all had maps and course descriptions, Karl sent us off on the trails, with Gilles bringing in the rear, offering to stay with the slowest runner to make sure nobody got lost on the first loop. This was a kind offer, but not many took the opportunity and soon the group stretched out, everybody falling into their own pace in several little groups.
I headed out with Lorraine and Claudia, soon realizing that the pace was to brisk for me to maintain on a long run. But the conversation and company was good and I hung on until the quasi turnaround on Marine Drive and Camosun St. where Arthur caught up to us and I decided to slow down a bit. The last time I ran that route was during the Vancouver New Year's Day Fat Ass 50, when utterly undertrained, the slight incline up Salish trail seemed like Mount Everest. I was pleasantly surprised, how gentle the ascent appeared during the Foolish Gerbil. Connecting back to Salish trail proved difficult for the majority of runners unfamiliar with the route and not having taken up Gilles' kind offer, a number of them put in some extra distance. Arthur kept me on track, though, and after a little stretch running with Karl and John, we finished the first loop in just over an hour.
The second loop started at the same - way to fast for me - pace with Claudia and Jennifer, one of the new Fat Asses. After not getting lost the first time around, we somehow managed to include a little detour together with John. No harm done, though, and we soon were able to pick up the correct trail again. Approaching the powerline, I had to say good bye to my running buddies and knew that I wouldn't head out for a third loop, as my quads and calves were starting to tighten up.
I finished the the second loop in 2:16. Happy with my run and pace, I saw the Fools leaving for their 3rd loop and waited for Lorraine, Cynnimon, Rhonda et al to finish their run.
Hoping for a repeat plus one on December 6th during the Foolish Gerbil 12 hour run. See you there.
