Report: What a fantastic day we had!
We all thought that the weather was going to be colder than we thought (see starter photo) and over dressed! There were a couple of fast bunnies that were dressed in only shorts and long sleeve shirts. We had 21 starters and almost everyone finished, I think Glenn is still out there somewhere.... We heard a rumor that he got injured on the trail but could not track him down.
We had about an even three way split of people doing either the 27km route, the 12km route or a 'custom' route. The trail was in great shape and we didn't see any signs of snow up at the Vancouver picnic area. However we were able to spot some 'garbage' up there and claim a few easy 'points'!
I had a blast blah blah blahing with Ean all they way up the climb to our highest point. Pushpa was within hearing distance but didn't catch us until we took a photo at the parking lot kiosk.
Marc came sailing by and wondered where everyone was because he started at 9:00 instead of 8:30, oops! But he made up for it with a speedy ascent and then subsequent descent. My buddy Mike F was ahead of me and sure to clock the best 27k time of the day. Well he didn't get lost and he's a good runner, go figure!
Some people peeled off and did the short route and I was content to hang out and do the long route. Had a great chat and catch up with friends.
However with only about 30 minutes to go (to get in under 3 hours) I felt we had to turn on the 'jets' so Suzanne, Spencer and myself started picking it up just as we headed to Bridle path. The pace only got faster as we traded leads culminating in a sprint finish over the last 2 blocks! My legs are still sore!
In true FA fashion Craig, Carolyn and Neil did their own 'custom' route and had a blast out there. We had some new FA'rs out and i hope they had a great time!
Thanks for making this a fantastic event and a good time to be out and running the North shore trails! See you at Pure Satisfaction in less than 2 weeks?
See you next year!!
Cheers, your host

Starter Photo - 26 November 2011 - 24 Starters
Report: What a day we had! This was a record for me in two ways: 1) we had 3 new members sign-up on the spot! 2) I ran a personal best at this years run (which was totally unexpected).
We had 24 starters and 24 finishers this year. Not bad considering the forcast for Saturday was calling for 50mm of RAIN! Well needless to say the weather didn't disappoint. We started out in sprinkling rain about 5 deg C which abated for a good part of an hour. Snow greeted us as we topped out at the high point at the Vancouver Picnic area.
I could go on how Ran and Mike P led the charge up Old Buck making the steep incline look non-existent or the fact that my buddy Mike F doing his first FA was giving me a fun run for my money!
Congrats to the two gals who came out and did they're very first FA event, and have NEVER ran on the North shore Trails! They navigated flawlessly through the maze of trails with only their instructions in hand (very cold hands I might add!).
I was lucky enough to end my run as the second 'deluge' started. My friends at the back weren't so lucky as they had to endure quite a bit of extra wetness!
We handed out a running hat, Montrail water bottle, and ladies T shirt all from Kintec. We also gave out 4 trail runner subscriptions! Wahoo!
Thank you so much to all of you who came out and braved the weather to enjoy our north Shore trails!
The 10th annual Seymour Super Fun Run was a complete success!
Cheers, your host

Report: We had a small but enthusiastic crowd of 12 FA's toe the line this morning and some pretty fast times laid down today! I can speak for myself that this was one of the most competitive 'fun runs' that I have ever done. We started off way to fast up Old Buck and were anaerobic (I was anyway) as we crossed Mt. Seymour road. Mike F, Jeff, Marc and myself were all pretty close together for most of the climb. Jeff was looking way too comfortable telling us about his running goals, Marc was asking me questions about my life which I could not reply due to my extremely heavy breathing!
We hit the picnic area around 37 minutes Marc picked up some garbage (Sibylle please give him a point for that!). We all headed down to Neds to rip it up! My plan was not to hammer too hard and enjoy the downhill! Well suffice it to say I had my own problems with a couple of little spills trying to avoid being caught by my buddies chasing me down! We arrived at the bottom of Bottle Top to cross Twin Bridge around 59 minutes, right on time! As expected Mike caught me on the flat section and passed me, Jeff caught up to me and ran ahead to keep Mike company. Then Marc caught up to me and being the great sport he is decided to keep me company, although I know he could have run faster.
We climbed up to Figure Eight, then headed to the LSCR, reaching the gazebo around 1:26.
Mike and Jeff are pretty far ahead and running strong at this point. I'm struggling, but Marc is keeping me company, what a guy!
We start Bridle path around 1:56, still on time for a 2:30 finish. Followed Bridle path and ran horribly with no real 'snap', struggled through this section until the last downhill stretch to the finish. There was no hope of catching Mike and Jeff, Marc was great keeping me motivated to the finish.
Jeff finished just ahead of Mike. Jeff thought he was setting the course record well in hand (2:31:43), but unfortunately he tied it! Mike F followed shortly after and set a PB of about 7 minutes with a time of 2:31:54, way to go Mike!
Third spot went to Marc and myself with a time of 2:34:30, which wasn't a PB for me, but Marc set a PB (it helped he stayed on course this time!).
Samir got of course and got lots of assistance from people on the course finishing in 3:03. James also pulled in at 3:03, not sure if he ran with Samir or not.
Jackie, Chloe and Glenn cruised to a comfy 3:04 all the while taking pictures and having too much fun, well it is the Seymour Super Fun Run after all!
Desmond did the smart thing by taking it easy after his recent knee surgery! Nicely done Des!
FrankieDocs had a really nice run and I'm sure he enjoyed the cold yet clear day. Frankie Docs also has the coolest shorts!
Last but not least is Doris who ran solo the whole run (I think) and finished in a very respectable 3:37.
Thanks all that came out it was great to have you all attend the 12th edition of the Seymour Super Fun Run!
Happy trails!

Report: Mike will post his report soon. In the meantime here are the highlights of today:
The day started unexpectedly dry and the 60% chance of rain did not materialize. Nevertheless, the trails were challenging and in parts very slippery. Were there was no slush, there was cold mud and puddles. Perfect conditions for a trail run. We had a record field of close to 50 starters, many of them Club Fat Ass virgins. Most did take the challenge and completed the 27km course, which by the way is part of the original Dirty Duo course from way back when Mike was the race director. A small group finished the short course and clocked in 14km, with the remaining crowd doing various custom distances.
Dario provided some excitement, first by bonking, then being AWOL, then, as I was just debating to initiate a search, found weaving across the parking lot at Parkgate. Not quite coherent and very cold, he happily slurped down the hot, sugared tea, a cookie and a bowl of chili we forced upon him. He did resist us ripping off his wet clothes (and putting dry stuff on him) and really didn't like Ran's hat....but it had to be done...sorry Dario.
A few folks walked away with prizes, thanks to Kintec, Trailrunner Magazine and Sugoi.
Thank you to all who came out today! It turned out to be a fantastic day to run around in the woods. The turn out was absolutely amazing! I can't wait to rip up Craig's Pure Satisfaction in two weeks.
Thanks again and we'll see you next year!
Cheers, Mike

Report: It was a heinous morning when a sturdy group of die hard trail runners assembled at the Bean Around The World Cafe in Parkgate Village. Nobody really wanted to brave the cold, driving rain, but off we went. The field featured a handful of virgin Fat Asses, including 4 participants from south of the border. Huffing and puffing up Old Buck we quickly fell in a few pace groups. The rains didn't stop during the long, steep ascent to the Vancouver Lookout, nor on the technical downhill on Neds Atomic Dustbin and Bottle Cap. Seymour River was roaring as the runners made their way up Fishermen's Trail, eventuallly looping back across the river across the Pipeline Bridge and on to Bridle Path. Everybody was happy to have a warm place at Bean Around the World for a coffee and sweet baked goods.

My wife, Lauren, works on the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday – every year. It’s a bit of a bummer, but that’s the way it goes. This year, like usual, I was faced with deciding what to do with my 4-day weekend. It’s typically a choice of: (A) driving from my home in St. Louis, MO to visit my mother in Arkansas, or (B) staying in the St. Louis area to spend the holiday with my Dad & his side of the family.
This year I created option (C) – fly to Vancouver to spend some time with friends and participate in the Club Fat Ass Seymour Super Fun Run! “Super Fun” is not a misnomer, although it’s a little less that fully descript in terms of this year’s event. It was rainy & very wet. This is exactly what I expected so I wasn’t surprised or disappointed in the least bit!
A whole host of characters (and believe me, CFA events are always FULL of characters) showed up for the run. 2009 featured a relatively large contingent of U.S. participants. In fact, 4 of the 15 runners were from the States: Me, from Kirkwood, MO and 3 others from Seattle, WA. Canadians and States folks alike, We all met at Bean Around the World Coffee near the base of Seymour Mountain in North Vancouver to start the run at about 8:30am.
Event host, Mike Wardas, explained the course and the format: 27k beginning with a long climb up “Old Buck” trail. As we jogged off from Bean Around the World Coffee runners were immediately met by this “hill”. According to my GPS watch we started at 323ft of elevation. In the subsequent 3 miles of SSFR we gained over 1,600ft! It was a well-groomed trail and run-able for the front-runners. I ran most of it, but there were some sections where I was just too out of breath to run, so I shuffled up the steepest parts.
Since this is a loop course there would inevitably be a downhill to offset the climb up Old Buck. SSFR chooses “Ned’s Atomic Dust Bin” as the route back down. Ned’s is a supremely crazy & highly technical downhill mountain bike course. It was practically a river due to the rain that “blessed us” all morning during SSFR this year. To say that I “ran” down Ned’s would be misleading. I think it’s more accurate to say I was in a controlled fall! Fortunately for me, fellow runners Wayne Guest & Desmond Mott were ahead of me on the way down to show me how it’s done. To my own surprise I didn’t fall once on Ned’s or any other portion of SSFR yesterday.
After Ned’s the course leveled out a bit, but that’s only by North Shore/North Vancouver standards. By Missouri standards this course was a monster all the way! The “rolling hills” coming in were between 100ft & 850ft in elevation – AMAZING. Sections of the last half of SSFR share portions of the famed Knee Knackering North Shore Trail Run (the Knee Knacker, as it’s best known) on the Baden-Powell trail. It’s beautiful.
For the last 30% of the race I ran along with Ean “Action” Jackson & Desmond Mott. It was a good thing I did because these fellas know the trail! There is such an abundance of trails on Seymour mountain that there’s no way I would have found my way, even with the handy instructions so kindly provided to me by Sibylle Tinsel (thank you Sibylle!).
After 3 ½ hours (happily) soaking in the rain, mud & general slop we had made our way back to Bean Around the World. I did feel as though I had been around the world by that point. Some impressive times were thrown down by some of the local participants, most notably Ran Katzman’s 2hr 45min dash around the course, and Wayne Guest’s highly respectable 2hr 52min effort. Well done to them, and to all of the participants. In fact, my new friend Reagan White complete his first run of this distance. Wow, Reagan, tough run to pick for your first run over 25k – good job!
I think all had good fun and I enjoyed catching up with CFA’er Craig Moore & others at the finisher celebration over a cup of joe.
Thanks Mike & CFA for hosting the event! Great to see you all out there, and I hope to be back soon for another run through the woods with you.
Cheers everyone,
Jason Eads
out and about the misty Seymour mountains.
2 of us turtlepacers stuck together,
We bounced down Ned’s and over the Bottle Top
2 became 1 when a calf cried stop!
3 times alone I thought I might quit,
My legs and lungs felt like s***
1 PB&J, 2 Clif bars, and 85oz of Gatorade kept me grooving,
1 foot in front of the other kept me moving
Then 2 dudes on bikes told me, “We just saw a running pack, up on Bridle.”
With a new surge of energy, I would not idle.
Up the trail, only 5K to go!
2 gals on bikes now = instant go go go!
… and to boot, they knew the way to Horse Loop!
Old Buck we’re here! Thank you mountain biking hotties,
So stoked, I shed a tear - I kid you nottie.
280 minutes after we all set out,
I crossed the goal and let out a shout!
27K on a day like today was something else,
and when my 2 eyes saw the other Club Fat Asses
I let out another shout!
Cool people and good times means…
…we’ll do this again.
How convenient - only 15 days until Pure Satisfaction begins!
I should be able to feel my legs again by then…
Photo bonus: a Texas-sized puddle I dodged today
Congratulations to all that came out for a wonderful day of camaraderie and running!
36 starters today plyed the treacherous trails of the North shore, some on route some not! The 'official' route is ~27km with 3,200 ft (975m) of elevation gained and lost. The weather was wet most of the time with temperatures around 5-7 deg C and puddles-o-plenty on the trail. We encountered 2 hiking entourages with 20+ members that made zigging and zagging through moving obstacles all the more challenging!
I ran with Jeremy who ran extremely well which enabled us to challenge each other duelling it out down Ned's! Of course Nevee the wonder dog accompanied me the whole way having a blast! Chris and Ran ended up ahead of me when I hit Bridle path and was surpised to see them in front of me. I accused them of going the wrong way and they looked at me puzzled. After the run we compared notes and it was me who went wrong! I went up Mystery creek and should have gone up the Hyannis connector access trail! There were many stories like that. We run so many events in those woods that we get them all confused!
The Bean Around the world venue worked out well as we seemed to have enough room for everyone as people filtered in and out. We had two draws for prizes to enable as many FA members as possible to get a prize regardless of when they came in. If you missed the draws we gave away - 6 pairs of Newbalance socks, 2 Newbalance touques from our sponsors at Kintec Footlabs, Kinesys products and two subscriptions to Trail Runner magazine.
Thank you to our sponsors who supplied the prizes. Thanks to everyone for making this event so fantastic every year. I'd like to say a special thank you to Daniel Probst who drove up from Bellingham to bring me my 'pulk' and run with us today.
After this run I had a chance to chat with Gail and George Foreshaw about putting on a 100 miler in the Manning Park area the second weekend in September. This is how it all happens folks, the maps come out, the distances start to be calculated, aid station locations, add a few demented former race directors and find a few runners who want the challenge and Voila! you have a new event! Keep looking on this website for details as it will run as a FA event first.
Cheers,
Mike

Note: Teri Bridgen, a new CFA member, had an unforeseen conflict arise which left her unable to attend the actual run on Saturday. She ventured out earlier this morning and here is what she had to say: "Well, it rained and it poured, but the route was fantastic. A little slick and full of large puddles but a great route that offers something for everyone. No snow, even at the parking lot and top of Ned's but some very cold, slightly frozen rain. Thanks for planning the run. I wish I could have done it with the group. Sibylle, my time was 3:24. Not a fast day but an enjoyable one. Good luck tomorrow and try to stay warm, it was a chilly morning. Teri". I received her note Friday evening before the start of the MM Run ... first results up on the website...gotta be a record ;-)

Event Report
I think we had 19 people meet out front of Bean Around the World coffee shop just before we started the run. We have a photo to be posted soon in which we can count everyone! I kept saying to Melissa as we drove to the start that it was a 'grey day' but she thought I was saying it was a GREAT day with a quizical look on her face. As it turned out it was in fact a Great day and a Grey day!
The usual suspects toed the line and suffice it to say I only saw most of them at the start and at the finish! I have a quick story to tell about our friend Karl who only a short time ago was off for 5 months with a serious back injury. We has always been a great ultra runner but now he seems to have a very 'lively' spark in him. As if Karl wasn't positive enough about life already he's back and running at full force. I'm afraid he will not only be finishing the long 100 milers but I predict he will be finishing them very competitively. Keep up the good work Karl!
Nevee the wonderdog was back running her 2nd M&M in her life and had a fantastic time out there. She truly loves playing with all the people on the trail and is at this moment lying spread out on the floor exhausted from the run Saturday and subsequent hike today!
The rain held off and there were rays of sunshine at times on the course. The temps were in the 3-4 C range and quite enjoyable for running. Personally I was happy to be out running and enjoying the commraderie that these FA runs embody. Even though i haven't run with our friends for a while seeing them seemed like we haven't missed a beat.
Thanks for all who came out to do the Mike and Melissa's fun run. We really appreciate you coming year after year. Thanks to Sibylle and Trail runner for the 2 free yearly subscriptions that we have away as draw prizes. They were very well received!
Till neext year take care and we'll see you at the next Fat Ass event.

Colin tracked the route on his GPS checkout the link: http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/invitation/dashboard.mb?episodePk.pkValue=4499158#
Sadly Colin recorded 24km where I was sure it was closer to 27km. I measured the whole route with my mountain bike 2 weeks before and got 27. So if there is anyone out there that can make a case for either one I'd love to hear it! If there are any errors with the times posted please let me know and I'll correct them.
