New Year's Resolution Contest

Club Fat Ass New Years Resolution Contest

Do you remember what your sports and fitness-related New Years resolutions were for last year? How well did you do relative to your goals? If you are like most, your answers are "No" and "No clue".

Plenty of studies show a common trait of overachievers is that they write their goals down. By sharing those goals with peers, the odds of them being achieved goes up even more.

The Club Fat Ass website makes it possible for us to keep track of our fitness-related goals and resolutions... right up there where the world can see them.

As a gift to anyone, from anywhere in the world, the Club has offered this service for free.  Instructions on how to share your fitness-related resolutions follow.

To spice things up a bit, and keep those who use the service honest to themselves, I propose a little contest.  Contest is open to anyone.  Guidelines follow.   Even have a prize!

Happy New Year

Host of Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50 & Freeze Your Fat Ass Swim

2013 New Years Resolution Contest

It's never too early to think about New Year's Resolutions...

As the annual odometer gets closer to rolling-over, I've been thinking about what I can still do to achieve the fitness goals I set out for myself at the start of this year. This got me thinking about what I'll do to keep my sorry ass moving forward in 2013.

Given that I plan to once again host a little resolution run on New Years day, I figured I'd also once again offer my guests, and anyone else who is interested, a place where they can log their 2013 fitness resolutions.

You can look at this as a goal-setting tool, as a way to keep yourself honest or as a contest to see how close you come to meeting your goals. More information at New Years Resolution Contest Rules.

May you achieve all of the goals you set for yourself!

Ean Jackson,
Host of Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50 & Freeze Your Fat Ass Swim

PS Anyone who is signed up to the online clubhouse (Club Fat Ass member or not) can log their goals and/or enter the contest.

PS If you resolve to start the new year with a run, please join me on New Years Day!

Ean Jackson's 2013 Fitness Resolutions

My students tell me I am a tough, but fair grader.  I tried to use the principles of tough love when assessing how I did relative to my personal athletic goals for 2012, I believe the reason why I scored higher  than in previous years was simply because I dialed-down the accountability.  In other words, I cut myself a bit more slack than in the past.  As a result, I scored higher, but may have accomplished less.

For 2013, my overarching athletic goals are to have fun, use the year to get back into fighting form, and aim for balance with family and career.

Hoping to maintain a variety of running, peak-bagging, cycling, swimming, downhill and backcountry skiing and snowshoe running in 2013.  Here are the specifics of how I propose to measure my athletic success in the new year:

Running and related events

  • finish in the top 3 of the CFA Club points competition
  • participate in at least 10 scheduled CFA events:  Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50K, Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run, Capilano Canyon Night Run - MardiGras, Mountain Highway Madness - Spring, The Marathon Shuffle in Powell River, North Shore Enduro, XTC, Bill's Great Peak Ascent, Capilano Canyon Night Run - Midsummer, Mountain Highway Madness - fall, Ann's, Go Deep, Seymour Super and Pure Satisfaction (or some combo thereof)
  • participate in 3+ CFA Flash events
  • finish top 20 in the Bagger Challenge and retain my status as a Compleatist (done them all!)
  • run the Trans-Canada Trail.  Ideally, parts from Maple Ridge to the Coquihalla Summit that I've never been on
  • complete Knee Knacker (#21, assuming I get in)
  • have a big athletic adventure of some kind: road trip, stage run, bag some peaks outside of the lower mainland of BC or something like that
  • 2 hash house harriers runs

Notes and Upside (resolution contest judges take note!)

  • I figure volunteering is as good as participating when it comes to measuring success for a wounded warrior.  When it comes time to take score, I assume volunteering counts as participation and it's OK to substitute one event for another in case of injury.
  • I'll give myself double points for completing a road marathon and/or a 1/2 Ironman triathlon

Apart from the running events, I aim to:

  • put the remnants of past injuries behind me and start a 20-year streak of injury-free running
  • go to at least 20% of the Capilano Eagles Tuesday speed workouts (yes, rain or shine, so that makes 10+ times)
  • stretch more... to the point where I can touch my toes with my palm
  • get in the pool once every other week (21+ times) and survive the Duel at the Pool 5K
  • get on the bike once every other week (21+ times, stationery bike and bike commuting included) and participate in at least one Gran Fondo or Fat Ass Fondo road bike ride
  • get into the gym or do equivalent lifting of rocks in the back yard twice a week when I'm not running outside (50+ times)
  • get on the snowshoes at least every other week (while there is snow, or 7+ times)
  • get in at least 5 days of downhill and/or backcountry skiing (including at least 1 at Whistler)
  • share some of my experience with a few up-and-coming runners and race directors
  • volunteer (help with Club Fat Ass as a Steering Committee member)
  • organize a successful trail running evening for the VIMFF
  • drink more water

By the way, if you get ambitious, you can also post your New Years resolutions on this page.

Andy's 2013 Resolutions.

Here I sit on the eve of the eve of another New Year, and I’ve decided to put down my Fat Ass goals for the year for the whole wide world to see. As a firmly entrenched Type B underachiever, my goals are neither lofty nor unattainable, yet I believe aiming for them over the course of the coming calendar year should serve me well.

I’ve never been much of a resolutionist, in fact last year I had only one thing on my list. I had resolved to be more social in my running life and meet some new people. I joined Club Fat Ass and in no time achieved my goal. I’ve had an awesome year running around on the trails of the North Shore and beyond and if next year is even half of what this one was, I’ll be a happy man. That said, here’s my list of resolutions for 2013...

I’m starting big here. In a quest to push myself more than I ever have before, I hereby resolve to complete the Vancouver 100 in 2013. There, I said it. Last year I paced Kyndra to her course record 32 hour, 28 minute finish and after witnessing her perseverance, commitment and pure guts, I knew I had to give this sucker a shot.

I loved my first year in the Bagger Challenge. I was able to bag 18 peaks last season, landing me in the top ten of Fat Ass Baggers. For the upcoming season of peak baggery, I may not end up being as ambitious, but I wanted to have a Bagger Challenge themed resolution. I hereby resolve to get up at least five new-to-me peaks in 2013. I also want to see more of the Howe Sound Crest Trail Area as well as delve more into the depths of the Fannin Range. And finally, I resolve to beat the canine. This year I was edged out, to the tune of a single star-bag, by Tundra the Ultra Dog, so next year my eyes are on the hound (this may prove to be my most difficult resolution of the lot...).

To my surprise, I ended up in the top ten for the 2012 point series. So I figure the same should be on the list for next year as well. If I’ve taken any lessons from this year’s point series, it’s that Garbage Points are to the CFA Point Series as two letter words are to the game of Scrabble. Small, easily achievable steps that can be the difference between winning and losing. I hereby resolve to snag a trash point at every event that I attend in 2013.

For more of a health related resolution, I hereby resolve to get down to my fightin’ weight in time for the Vancouver 100 and stay there until at least the Squamish 50 in August. This shouldn’t be too tough, it’s not like I’m talking “Biggest Loser” type weight loss, just getting rid of the off-season beer/pie gut.

Here’s one to purely pad the stats. I will cycle commute all year. If I don’t ride my bike, I will walk or run... my commute must be 100% human powered in 2013. This should be easy, I don’t remember the last time I took a car or bus to work.

A couple things that I’ve been meaning to do, but have never really gotten around to, are night running and snow activities. So in 2013 I hereby resolve to do more night running than I did in 2012 (should be easy, I got out for a total of one night run this year) and to get out snowshoeing or skiing or in some other way traipsing through the snow at least 7 times (kind of an arbitrary number, but 5 didn’t seem like it was enough and 10 felt like it might be setting my admittedly low bar a bit too high).

I have too many pairs of running shoes. In 2013, I hereby resolve to spend $0 on running shoes. That said, I reserve the right to spend my hard earned, formerly-allocated-for-shoes-cash on as many bottles, packs, bags, gadgets and other superfluous items as I see fit (just because I have acknowledged my shoe addiction, there’s no reason to leave all those fine CFA Business Members unsupported all year long).

I won’t be in the country at Kneeknacker time next year and therefore won’t have any mandatory volunteer obligations, but I still want to do my part and give something back to this community. Therefore I hereby resolve to do some form of race or trail maintenance volunteerism in 2013. I’ve already put my name out there a couple times, so this one should be easily resolvable.

And finally, I would like to try something new so I will take at least one fitness related class. This can be yoga, swimming, line dancing, power lifting... whatever (maybe Marc will offer up his boot camp again?).

There you have it, let’s talk again in a year and see how I did.

Muddy's 2013 Fitness Goals

Somehow...somwhere, I plan to get back to running ultras this year.

Work & illness got in the way of 2012's best laid plans, so I'm hoping to get something epic, something memorable, &/or something of note done by the time the year's up. Besides the vaguery of saying that I'll "train more"...here's what's up....

-Participate in NY Fat Ass

-Judo at least twice a week

-Fastpack something more than 2 days long

-Explore a new trail...maybe in the Chilcotins, Stein, Pitt Valley, Shangri-La

-Pace KateMD at Western Sates 100

-Pace or crew Meredith at Badwater if she'll have me again

-Get back to Peak Baggin' & complete that original list of peaks

-Re-convince Mrs Mud that crewing is the best form of vacation fun on the planet

-Weights twice a week (gotta balance running & judo somehow)

-Continue to volunteer with Knee Knacker, & if the stars align, I may get to run in it this year.

-Make up for having to forfeit my entry into Orcas Island 50km (judo tournament on the same day!!!!)

-Do a race of 100km or more.

-Explore the world of micro bewery IPA's

OK...that  should be a decent start to the year.

Happy new year's all!!

New Year's Resolutions 2013 - Marc Schmitz

1. My first goal is to improve my 10k, 1/2 Marathon, Marathon and 50k time by an average of 15%

This project I already started by running a faster 10k in October at one of the MEC Fall Classic races.

I ran a total of 1 Marathon, 2 1/2 Marathons and 1 50k in total so far (I guess I race a little less than most). The First two are a while back and the 50k included a big elevation change, so I need a big improvement for that distance to reach my overall goal.

Previous 10k best: 48:41 New best: 43:35 Improvement: 10.48%

Previous 1/2 Marathon best: 1:49:21 (2003)

Previous Marathon best: 3:52:41 (2007)

Previous 50k best: 6:52:45 (Frosty 2012  - Good luck to me in the New Years Day 50k - like I said I need a big percentage improvement here to reach my average of 15%)

Oh, by the way. I am so not excited to be running two road races in 2013, but I feel I should post decent times for Marathon and Half so I don't need to do it again anytime soon and can stick to the trails :-)

2. Complete 2 out of town Club events - I am hoping for Squamish Scrambler and Spaghetti Trees (or maybe maybe Marathon Shuffle again if the other two don't work out)

3. Volunteer or collect garbage while participating in CFA events on 5 occasions throughout the year (Contemplating to volunteer at Diez Vista - I am really sad I missed the sign up for that one)

4. Continue to meet great people through the Club - to make it measurable I will say: Bag at least 10 peaks with a total of 10 different Bagging buddies - So you guys better let me know if you are heading out for bagging adventures

5. Finally try cross country skiing this season - at least two times ( I keep wanting to, but I fail to do so) and have a total of 6 snow adventures (up from 4 in 2012)

6. Host 10 Seymour Sunday (or Saturday) Flash Events  throughout the year, mainly during Winter and Spring, host a successful North Shore Enduro and help out on the steering committee

7. Maintain a clean vegetarian diet without having to struggle to do so (very little refined foods, gmo-foods , alcohol, white sugar and flour; no coffee) resulting in getting my weight down by the time my birthday rolls around (End of April) - This is the one I failed to accomplish in 2012, so this year it's personal

Plus my long term goals remain (nearly) unchanged:

1. Run a Boston qualifying Marathon time before I turn 40 (this one keeps getting tougher as they drive down the times, better get on with the speedwork)

2. Finish bagging 50 different peaks (that's an average of 5 a year) by the time I turn 45 ... what the heck ... let's aim at completing them all even though new ones keep being added

3. Complete the West Coast Trail in a single day by the time I am 50  - or alternatively do it in multiple days with my family (I might get it done way sooner, but as a guy with a young family I'd rather pace myself)

My goals might be less ambitious than others, but on the other hand I believe them to be attainable. Therefore I will consider EVERYTHING UNDER 100% ACCOMPLISHMENT of my resolutions A FAILURE, which in turn will hinge on the last resolution of staying injury free.

Happy, healthy, active 2013 to everyone.

Reagan's 2013 Fitness Resolutions

Goals for 2013 Running/Bagging Events:

* Finish in Top 10 in club point series, participating in at least 8 club events
* Finish in Top 20 in bagger challenge point standings, bag at least 8 peaks
* Build on 2011 and 2012 ultra participation by completing 3 ultras in 2013 - Chuckanut, Diez Vista, and Tenderfoot Boogie (or equivalent)

Apart from the running/hiking, I aim to:

* contribute to a team effort to update the ActivePorker iPhone app for 2013, including a showcase for the Bagger Challenge

* Host my event, Sweet Go Deep, again

* generally achieve better heath in 2013 compared to 2012 by sleeping more, eating better, keeping stress in check.

* continue bike commuting daily, a habit started in 2011 that is now part of my daily culture, rain, snow, or shine.

* provide volunteer and/or pacing support for at least one trail race

* start my graduate studies successfully in July and run the trails of Ithaca, NY and Kingston, ON at least once that same month!

Sibylle's 2013 Fitness Goals

Despite feeling more like a cyclist than a runner these days, my athletic goals for 2013 centre around running.  Together with pals Wendy and Pat, I signed up for the Berlin Marathon, September 29.  Ever since the Berlin wall came down, I wanted to run the Berlin marathon and run through the Brandenburg Gate.  Growing up in postwar Germany, running under the Brandenburg Gate was not a realistic thing to have on your bucket list ;-)  Well, it is on my list for this year and planning for our trip is slowly kicking into gear, as is the training.

Goal #1: Complete the 2013 Berlin Marathon

Goal #2:  Establish a training routine for the marathon

  • find time to add 2 weekday runs to my 3 bike commute workouts (this is going to be the most difficult part for me)
  • consistently run at least 1 day on the weekend, with increasing length according to training plan
  • pending a 10km road pace run, obtain training plan from dad (marathon runner, coach and mentor extraordinaire)
  • follow training plan
  • increase pace  (do not skip the interval/speed training)
  • do not get injured
  • lose weight to (as the skinny boys participating in the Resolution Contest call it) get into fighting shape cheeky

Goal #3: Participating in the Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass - custom course of at least 10km

Goal # 4: Participating in at least the following other events/races:

  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run
  • Mountain Highway Madness
  • XTC 25K
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Nite Night Run
  • Go Deep or Go Home
  • Go Deep
  • Seymour Super Fun Run
  • Pure Satisfaction

Goal #5: run the Trans-Canada Trail.  Ideally, parts from Coquitlam to the Coquihalla Summit that I've never been on

Goal # 6: 1 peak in the Peak Bagger Challenge  (anticipating being on the road for my marathon training, so keep this one low key)

Goal # 7: ride my bike to work 3x week - weather permitting (I've been averaging 3.5 per week rain or shine in 2012, but will need to adjust to accommodate my marathon training).

Goal #8: add a weight/strength routine to my schedule (2x a week at home with free weights and balance ball)

Goal # 9: stretch at least 5 timse a week (focus on calfs, hips and hamstrings)

Goal #10: Add some other sports to the mix occasionally, ie. skiing , snowshoing, inline skating, badminton, kayaking, swimming, Ultimate. Realistically, I won't have time to add this into a weekly routine, but doing something different every once in a while would be nice.

Goal #11: volunteer for Kneeknacker again (aidstation captain at Cleveland Dam)

Goal #12: swim in the ocean at least once a week in the warmer month

Goal # 13: have a big athletic adventure of some kind: overnight hiking/snowshoe/bike/kayak trip (or something along those lines)

New Years Resolution Contest - 2012

And the winner is... Marc Schmitz!  He achieved 90% of his resolutions for 2012.

All of the submissions related to 2012 resolutions are below.  Congrats to Marc and to all of the other overachievers in the Club!

2012 New Year's Resolution Evaluation - Marc Schmitz

1. Complete (my first) 2 Ultras (maybe the Kneeknacker route plus one additional one)

I completed the Knee Knacker and Frosty Mountain (both were awesome races, but I think I liked Frosty even slightly better, due to the low key feel and the fact that I had never run any of the course) 10/10

2. Complete 6 CFA events plus 6 flash events (days of peak bagging would count as a flash event since it serves a club related purpose)

The point series statistics say I did 8 events and I have 12 points as an event host so I must have hosted 12 flash events (plus I attended some additional ones and did some peak bagging) 10/10

3. Volunteer or collect garbage while participating in CFA events on 3 occasions throughout the year

Did some volunteer trail work with  the Knee Knacker folks and collected garbage on several occasions either during CFA events or during training runs. 10/10

4. Get to know my fellow CFA members (potentially being able to recognize at least 20 of you on the street by the end of the year, know your names and remember at least one detail about you)

I tallied that one up in my head and I am confident, that I accomplished that one. 10/10

5. Collect a total of 4 snow adventures throughout the year (snowboarding, snowshoeing or XC skiing)

That one is a tight one, but I managed 3 Snowshoe and 1 Snowboard outings throughout the year (1 Tobogganing as a bonus, but still no xc skiing). 10/10

6. Turn "Seymour Sunday" into a regular off season CFA flash event staple

I hosted 12 Flash event Seymour Sundays and I managed to never having to run by myself. I am hoping to grow the number of people who are coming out to each event a little bit this winter. 8/10

7. Maintain a clean vegetarian diet without having to struggle to do so (very little refined foods, gmo-foods , alcohol, white sugar and flour; no coffee) (maybe a good indicator of success would be attaining and maintaining a single digit body fat content by the time my birthday rolls around (end of April) without straining to do so / hey, the new fancy scale's gotta be good for something)

That one did not really work out for me. I did stay of the coffee and meat and managed to practice moderation in most of the other departments. In the end of the day my weight stayed pretty even throughout the year, but never really went down to the mean and lean level where I would have liked it too be. 5/10

Total: 63/70 = 90%

Inittially I said I will not be satisfied with less than 100%. I cannot help, but feel accomplished about the way the year has gone though. I learned a lot about running longer and fueling, plus I met some great people in the process.

I guess overall I did set realistic goals for myself.

Jackson Gives Himself an A- ( 89% )

Can almost see the finish line of 2012...

Not a bad year from the personal athletic goal achievement perspective.  Could have done better with a new set of knees and lot fewer work hours every week, but I figure I earn a cookie for doing not bad at all with what I had to work with, especially because my list of goals was as long as my arm:

  • made the top 3 in the CFA standings, completed more than 10 CFA scheduled events and more than 3 flash events.  Slightly edged-out of top 10 in Bagger Challenge, just about did the stretch of the TCT I'd hoped to, did complete my 20th KneeKnacker but it was my only 50K due to knackered knees, had many running adventures but they didn't include MOMAR or any of the Hash runs.
  • did volunteer on the back end of several running events and the CFA Steering Committee.  Didn't do a marathon or tri, but did complete the Whistler Gran Fondo, so bagged those bonus points!
  • still semi-injured, so off the 100-mile (run) diet, but not complaining because I'm running 4-6X/week
  • with 4 weeks to go, close to hitting my goal for Tuesday night intervals with Capilano Eagles.  Off on the swim objectives, good on the bike goals, lifted a lot of rocks this year, did a fair bit of snowshoeing and some backcountry touring.  Bonus points for maintaining my Canadian Ski Instructor (CSIA) and ski coach (CSCF) certifications.
  • drank enough water and lots of beer

Reagan's Year - How'd I do - I'd say 40%

The goals were a decent motivator this year. So how'd I do? Overall 12/30 = 40% attained! Woot!

* Finish in Top 3 in club point series, participating in at least 16 club events

Result: 1/5 Goal - missed this goal badly, was just too busy or sick to join many events.

* Finish in Top 10 in bagger challenge point standings, bag at least 12 peaks

Result: 2/3 Goal missed, finished in Top 20 by bagging 9 peaks.  Created many lasting memories by bagging with Eric Rannaud and Isaac White.

* Build on 2011's 1st three ultras and run 4 ultras in 2012

Result: 2/4 Goal missed + Completed March 17th Chuckanut 50k after a tough build-up health-wise that severely limited my training + Started the June 30th Tenderfoot Boogie 50k but dropped at 40k mark due to hypothermia-like symptoms + Ran Sept 15th Frosty Mt. 27k (scaled back from 50k due to poor training in lead-up!

Apart from the running events, I aimed to:

* serve another term on the steering committee, but do some heavy lifting this time around

Result: 1/3 Goal missed. Enjoyed serving on steering committee but fell short of expectations with regards to heavy lifting.

* update the ActivePorker iPhone app for 2012, include a showcase for the Bagger Challenge

Result: 1/5 Goal missed, though verified compatibility of ActivePorker with every new iOS release - it still works!   Will provide source code to a parter for updating in 2013 (hopefully)...

* volunteer at an aid station for at least one race

Result: 0/3 Goal missed. Maybe next year.

* volunteer to work on/build at least one trail

Result: 0/3 Goal missed. Maybe next year.

* bike commute daily for full year (building on daily bike commute habit formed 2010)
Result: 5/5 Goal attained! Biked to work 95+% of the time.

Bring on 2013!

Sibylle's Year - Looking Back On 2012 and How I Did With My New Year's Resolutions

Time to evaluate how I did on my goals for 2012.  I feel even less than a runner and more like a cyclist now, but since I signed up for the 2013 Berlin Marathon, I better find the runner in me again....

Goal #1: Healing the painful heelspur on my left foot.
Evaluation: Accomplished.  It took a while but I am running pain free these days. 10/10

Goal #2: Participating in the Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass - custom 10km course
Evaluation: Accomplished.  10/10

Goal # 3: Participating in at least the following other events/races: 8.6/10

  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run - 10/10
  • Mountain Highway Madness  - not sure what happened, perhaps the snow scared me off? 0/10
  • XTC 25K - (did a custom course) 8/10
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent 10/10
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Nite Night Run - wouldn't miss it. 10/10
  • Go Deep or Go Home - mini custom 10/10
  • Sunshine in September - cancelled n/a
  • Go Deep - 10/10
  • M&M's - 10/10
  • Pure Satisfaction 10/10

Goal # 5: 5 peaks in the Peak Bagger Challenge  - oops 1/5 = 0.5/10

Goal # 6: ride my bike to work - weather permitting (I've been averaging 3.5 per week rain or shine and am hoping to keep that up. - done 10/10

Goal #7: start going to the gym again at least 1x/week for core and upper body work Hm, started on this, but cancelled my membership.  Still doing weights at home, but could do better. Finding time is an issue 4/10

Goal # 8: get on a more consistence stretching program and become more flexible - easily reach toes!  Inconsistent effort. Finding time is an issue 5/10

Goal #9: Add some other sports to the mix occasionally, ie. Badminton, kayaking, Ultimate. Realistically, I won't have time to add this into a weekly routine, but doing something different every once in a while would be nice.  Ahem, I went kayaking once and swam once a week in the ocean over the summer month until it got to cold to peservere. 5/10

Total tally would be 6.6/10

Alli's new year resolutions

1. Run a sub 40 10k 2. Run a sub 3 marathon 3. Run at least 5 CFA events 4. Be able to do one chin up with baby on back 5. Stay uninjured!!

Ean Jackson's 2012 Fitness Resolutions

It's beginning to look like a trend:  Start the year with great expectations, injure myself, and hobble through the rest of the year.  Although I didn't set any world records, or even set any personal best athletic accomplishments in 2011, I'm please to say I'm ending the year in one piece and happy with how things turned out.

Hoping to maintain a variety of running, cycling, swimming, peak-bagging, skiing and snowshoe running in 2012.  Here are the specifics of how I propose to measure my athletic success in the new year:

Running and related events

  • finish in the top 3 of the CFA Club points competition
  • participate in at least 10 scheduled CFA events:  Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50K, Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run, Capilano Canyon Night Run - MardiGras, Mountain Highway Madness - Spring, The Marathon Shuffle in Powell River, North Shore Enduro, XTC, Bill's Great Peak Ascent, Capilano Canyon Night Run - Midsummer, Mountain Highway Madness - fall, Sunshine in September, Ann's, Go Deep, Seymour Super or Pure Satisfaction
  • participate in 3+ CFA Flash events
  • finish top 10 in the Bagger Challenge
  • run the Trans-Canada Trail from Horseshoe Bay at least to Maple Ridge
  • complete Knee Knacker (#20, assuming I get in)
  • complete the run that STORMY has morphed into:  the Squamish 50.  (I'm assuming since it is the same date and substantially the same course, I can count it as #11 rather than #1)
  • finish at least one of the following local ultras: Chuckanut 50K, Dirty Duo 50K, Frosty 50K, Walk in the Park 54K, Elk/Beaver 50K
  • have a couple of running adventures: Forbidden Forest Run, Stein Valley (the whole enchilada), the Waterfall Marathon
  • complete an adventure race: MOMAR

  • get on the bike once every other week (21+ times, stationery bike and bike commuting included) and participate in at least one Fat Ass Fondo
  • get into the gym or do equivalent lifting of rocks in the back yard twice a week when I'm not running outside (50+ times)
  • get on the snowshoes once a week (while there is snow, or 15+ times)
  • get in at least 5 days of downhill and/or backcountry skiing (including at least 1 at Whistler)
  • share some of my experience with a few up-and-coming runners and race directors
  • volunteer (help with Club Fat Ass as a Steering Committee member)
  • drink more water

By the way, if you get ambitious, you can also post your New Years resolutions on this page.

Eric's 2012 resolutions

  • Chuckanut
  • Vancouver 100 (strictly more than half the distance)
  • Kneeknackers
  • a 100k (Foolish run, maybe?)
  • Frosty 50k, faster than 2011 time of 7:50
  • Participate to 10 CFA events
  • Pick up garbage (!)
  • Bag all the peaks within reach of public transit, without a bike (list TBD, but it's a somewhat objective criteria). In other words, something like all the peaks below and including the line: Runner, The Needles, Crown, Harvey. (West Lion excluded.)
  • 3 waterbags out of the 4 I can think of: Cypress range, Grouse range, Seymour range, a peak up from Lions Bay.
  • Run the TCT from Horsehoe Bay to Langley, with the Boundary Road -> Langley section in one go. Run more of the TCT than Ean.
  • Run to/from work at least once a week.

My Fitness Resolutions

Though not generally inclined to air my hopes, dreams, failures, and shortcomings in public, as I sat in bed this morning rather hung-over, 3 doughnuts into my requested birthday breakfast of a plate of Tim's and a double-double, and having already missed my morning ski, I stumbled across the CFA Resolutions Contest and thought the threat of public humiliation might be my best option. In the spirit of getting my fitness back on track I resolve to do at minimum:

(1) one marathon

(2) one ultra

(3) 40+ days on skis

(4) 5 CFA events

(5) one Gran Fondo (or similar event)

(6) 5 races not noted above

(7) keep my back healthy

(8) renew my gym membership and go twice a week

(9) lose the "baby weight"

(10) enjoy running

Good luck, and may we all tie for first place in this contest!

New years resolutions - Marc Schmitz

1. Complete (my first) 2 Ultras (maybe the Kneeknacker route plus one additional one)

2. Complete 6 CFA events plus 6 flash events (days of peak bagging would count as a flash event since it serves a club related purpose)

3. Volunteer or collect garbage while participating in CFA events on 3 occasions throughout the year

4. Get to know my fellow CFA members (potentially being able to recognize at least 20 of you on the street by the end of the year, know your names and remember at least one detail about you)

5. Collect a total of 4 snow adventures throughout the year (snowboarding, snowshoeing or XC skiing)

6. Turn "Seymour Sunday" into a regular off season CFA flash event staple

7. Maintain a clean vegetarian diet without having to struggle to do so (very little refined foods, gmo-foods , alcohol, white sugar and flour; no coffee)

(maybe a good indicator of success would be attaining and maintaining a single digit body fat content by the time my birthday rolls around (end of April) without straining to do so / hey, the new fancy scale's gotta be good for something)

Plus my long term goals are:

1. Run a Boston qualifying Marathon time before I turn 40

2. Finish bagging 50 different peaks (that's an average of 5 a year) by the time I turn 45

3. Complete the West Coast Trail in a single day by the time I am 50

(or alternatively do it in multiple days with my whole family)

My goals might be less ambitious than others, but on the other hand I believe them to be attainable. Therefore I will consider EVERYTHING UNDER 100% ACCOMPLISHMENT of my resolutions A FAILURE, which in turn will hinge on the last resolution of staying injury free.

Happy, healthy, active new year to everyone.

Sibylle's 2012 Fitness Goals

I am feeling more like a cyclist these days then a runner....certainly haven't been able to put any mileage in since earlier in the year.  I guess my main goal this year is to get rid of the very painful heelspur that has been plaguing me and prevented me from consistently running:

Goal #1: Healing the painful heelspur on my left foot.

Goal #2: Participating in the Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass - custom 10km course

Goal # 4: Participating in at least the following other events/races:

  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run
  • Mountain Highway Madness
  • XTC 25K
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Nite Night Run
  • Go Deep or Go Home
  • Sunshine in September
  • Go Deep
  • M&M's
  • Pure Satisfaction

Goal # 5: 5 peaks in the Peak Bagger Challenge

Goal # 6: ride my bike to work - weather permitting (I've been averaging 3.5 per week rain or shine and am hoping to keep that up.

Goal #7: start going to the gym again at least 1x/week for core and upper body work

Goal # 8: get on a more consistence stretching program and become more flexible - easily reach toes!

Goal #9: Add some other sports to the mix occasionally, ie. Badminton, kayaking, Ultimate. Realistically, I won't have time to add this into a weekly routine, but doing something different every once in a while would be nice.

Tanis' New Year Resolutions

1. Run a full marathon.

2. Run my first ultra in October!! WAHOO!!

3. Run injury free!

4. Volunteer at at least two events.

5. Run for myself and health!

New Years Resolution Contest - 2011

And the winner is...Reagan White!  He achieved 56% of his resolutions for 2011.  For doing the best job of hitting his goals, he wins a pair of Solomon running shoes and a video gait analysis from Kintec Footlabs.

All of the submissions related to 2011 resolutions are below.  Congrats to Reagan and to all of the other overachievers in the Club!

Ean Jackson's 2011 Fitness Resolutions - How'd I Do?

Less than a week until the end of 2011.  With the finish line in sight, I suppose it's OK to take score and see how I did relative to my friends and peers who were bold enough to share their fitness resolutions about this time last year...

Hoping to run for fun and try to dial up the speed a bit in 2011.  Here are the specifics of how I propose to measure my athletic success in the new year:

Running and related events

  • participate in at least 10 scheduled CFA events:  Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50K, Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run, Capilano Canyon Night Run - MardiGras, Mountain Highway Madness - Spring (3 laps, so I can count it as an ultra), The Marathon Shuffle in Powell River, North Shore Enduro (aim for at least 50K), Squamish Brick, XTC, Bill's Great Peak Ascent, Capilano Canyon Night Run - Midsummer, Mountain Highway Madness - fall, Sunshine in September, Ann's, Go Deep) over 100% woo hoo!
  • participate in 3+ CFA Flash events.  over 100% woo hoo!
  • earn age group recognition in at least one of the following local ultras: Chuckanut 50K, Dirty Duo 50K, Diez Vista 50K, Frosty 50K, Walk in the Park 54K or Elk/Beaver 50K  100% no show
  • complete Knee Knacker (#19, assuming I get in) yes!
  • complete STORMY (#11 for me)  pass.  STORMY didn't happen.
  • have a couple of running adventures: Forbidden Forest Run, Stein Valley (the whole enchilada), the Waterfall Marathon pass. these didn't happen
  • complete an adventure run: MOMAR  nope.  Injured, so didn't send my ap in.
  • 2 hash house harriers runs   got 1 in, so 50%
  • finish top 10 in Bagger Challenge  nope. I was 26th, behind my arch rival, 10-year old Harry

Notes and Upside (resolution contest judges take note!)

  • I figure volunteering is as good as running when it comes to measuring success for a wounded warrior, and so is substituting one event for another in case of injury.  yes... helped at a couple of events and hosted several, too, so figure I'm good on Karma points
  • be in the top 3 of the CFA Club points competition.  yes!
  • I'll give myself double points for completing a road marathon and/or a 1/2 Ironman triathlon didn't attempt either in 2011, so moot point

Apart from the running events, I aim to:

  • put the remnants of past injuries behind me and start a 20-year streak of injury-free running   fail
  • go to at least 25% of the Capilano Eagles Tuesday speed workouts (yes, rain or shine, so that makes 10+ times) fail
  • stretch more... to the point where I can touch my toes with my palm fail
  • get in the pool once every other week (21+ times) and survive the Duel at the Pool 5K  survived the Duel, but got my ass handed to me
  • get on the bike once every other week (21+ times, stationery bike and bike commuting included)  fail, but did complete 2 Fat Ass Fondos and a Ride for the Haggis!
  • get into the gym or do equivalent lifting of rocks in the back yard twice a week when I'm not running outside (50+ times)  yes, based on equivalency
  • get on the snowshoes once a week (while there is snow, or 20+ times)  got out a fair but, but less than 20 times
  • get in at least 5 days of downhill and/or backcountry skiing (including at least 1 at Whistler)  100%
  • share some of my experience with a few up-and-coming runners and race directors  yes!
  • volunteer (help with Club Fat Ass as a Steering Committee member)  yes!
  • drink more water  yes, but can do better

Since my resolutions from 2011 were entered into the club New Years Resolution contest, I have to now provide a hard score for myself.  Yikes... this is a bit of a hairball given I had a lot of goals thrown-in with the resolutions.  Given that I accomplished most of what I wanted to, I'm going to give myself an A- with a ribbon for achievement. Since letter grades don't count, I'll give myself an 80%

By the way, if you get ambitious, you can post your 2012 New Years resolutions on this page.

Ean Jackson's 2011 Fitness Resolutions

Last year saw me with a ripped calf for the first couple of months, but otherwise, 2010 was a great year.  I completed my 100th ultra, finished a 100-miler and bagged 48 peaks in the Bagger Challenge.

Mike's New Year's resolutions

Ok ambitious I know but here is the plan...

Event goals

1) New Years Victoria 50k - Jan 1, 2011 - Complete!

2) Squamish Scrambler - Sat February 12, 2011 - missed this one ;-(

3) Dirty Duo 50k - Sat March 12, 2011 - Complete! 4:59:25!!

4) Diez Vista 50k - Saturday, Apr 9, 2011

5) Elk Beaver 50m - Sat May 7, 2011

6) Vancouver 100 - Saturday June 4, 2011

7) Peak bagger challenge - July 2011

8) Cascade Crest 100 mile - August 27-28, 2011 - Need new goal it's full!

9) Athletics for kids fitness challenge - November 2011 complete the 1000 reps in under 30 minutes with excellent form.

10) Yukon Arctic Ultra - Feb 2012 - I'd really like to go back and complete the 300 mile version.

Being specific with these Event goals is tough.  I really just want to complete them.  As for the Peak Bagger challenge I'd like to do the'Cirque de Grouse' again.  That consisted of doing the GG or BCMC heading to Grouse, Dam, Litlte goat, Crown, Goat and Fromme.  Then head back to the starting point.  All of this is in the name of 'training' for completing the CC100.

*********************************************************************************

Training goals:

T1) Bodyweight training 3x per week - Jan 3, 2011 to June 2011 - 6 month Turbulence training program

T2) Yoga 2x per week - Jan to Jan

T3) Walking 3x per week - Jan to Jan

T4) Snowshoe or play with the kids 1x per week outside - Jan to Jan

T5) Long run every weekend if no 'event - Jan to Jan from 2-8 hrs long.

Training goals is like life goals, how to keep it all together!

The plan above seems to be reasonable we will have to see.

Sibylle's 2011 Fitness Goals - How did I do?

Here is my assessment on how I have done with my New Years Resolutions for 2011.  In general, I ran much less than I hoped for, due to a naggin injury.  However, I was able to at least do custom runs at most CFA events.  My lofter Bagger Challenge goals did me in though...Only climbed 2 peaks...

Goal #1: Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 25km.  done 1/1

Goal #2: Healing my torn ankle ligament! done 1/1

Goal # 4: Participating in at least the following other events/races: 8/11

  • Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run x
  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run done
  • Mountain Highway Madness done
  • XTC 25K done
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent done
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Nite Night Run done
  • Go Deep or Go Home done
  • Sunshine in September x
  • Go Deep done
  • M&M's x
  • Pure Satisfaction done

Goal # 5: 10 peaks in the Peak Bagger Challenge 2/10

Goal # 6: ride my bike to work - weather permitting (I've been averaging 3x per week during the lousy late fall weeks, so hopfully I can maintain and improve on that) done = upped my average to between 3-4 times per week = 1/1

13/24 = 54.2 %

Sibylle's 2011 Fitness Goals

New Years Resolution Contest - 2010

It's never too early to think about New Year's Resolutions...

As the annual odometer gets closer to rolling-over, I've been thinking about what I can still do to achieve the fitness goals I set out for myself at the start of this year. This got me thinking about what I'll do to keep my sorry ass moving in 2010.

Given that I plan to once again host a little resolution run on New Years day, I figured I'd also once again offer my guests, and anyone else who is interested, a place where they can log their 2010 fitness resolutions.

You can look at this as a goal-setting tool, as a way to keep yourself honest or as a contest to see how close you come to meeting your goals. More information at New Years Resolution Contest Rules.

May you achieve all of the goals you set for yourself!

The winner of the 2010 New Year's Resolution Contest will receive a Sole Footcare Package from our business member Kintec Footlab / Sole.

Ean Jackson,
Host of Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50 & Freeze Your Fat Ass Swim

PS Anyone who is signed up to the online clubhouse (Club Fat Ass member or not) can log their goals and/or enter the contest.  Kintec Footlabs has again offered a prize to the Club member who comes the closest to achieving their goals for 2010.

PS If you resolve to start the new year with a run, please join me for a 50K on New Years Day

New Years Resolutions Contest Winner 2010

In all the excitement around the holidays, wrapping up our annual contests and the Vancouver New Year's Day Fat Ass 50km Run, I somehow missed to post the winner of the New Year's Resolution Contest.

I am happy to announce that our member Jason Eads of Tampa, Florida (formerly of St Louis/Kirkwood MO) has reached most of his athletic goals for 2010 and won the contest.  Jason calculated a 92% success rate, compared to 90% by the second finisher, Ean Jackson.  Well done, Jason and Ean.

Jason's prize is a Sole Footcare Package kindly provided by our business member and foot specialist, Kintec.  The package includes Sole flip flops, socks and insoles as well as a digital motion gait analysis by Kintec.

Craig's running goals for 2010

Keeping it simple and with the understanding that I am not in the contest for 2010 because of a post Dec 31 entry, I thought I'd put some ideas down for my running goals. And I'm looking for suggestions/invitations from others to help me out:

  • Run NYDFA50 and avoid the swim once again.
  • Dirty Duo 50km.
  • Run at least 25km and crew for the rest of the time at the Vancouver 100.
  • Run 25km at Pure Satisfaction.
  • Volunteer at Knee Knacker and other events where I can find my running friends.
  • Volunteer to help with 5 Peaks training runs.
  • Volunteer at STORMY.
  • Bag some peaks ... the ones I have yet to do especially like Cathedral Mountain.
  • Hold a Flash or Annual CFA Event to Gambier Island, Mount Killam.
  • Run one race outside of BC.
  • Seriously consider joining the S.L.U.G.s for a pleasant run down south with Jason Eads.
  • Meet some new running friends and give Kristie Congram a run for her money at attracting new CFA members.
  • Train on trails I have yet to experience here in the Lower Mainland or elsewhere. I hope people that know me or don't know me will invite me to run on their favourite turf.
  • Closely watch Jesper's progress for a chance to run with him as he gets closer to Canada and his finish in Newfoundland (World Run II).
  • Run to the South Needle again on a clear day and sit a while ... very nice!

Good luck to everyone with their goals and aspirations for 2010.

Ean Jackson's 2010 Fitness Resolutions

Time to draw the lines in the sand for 2010.

Last year saw me injured for the first 7 months and on the comeback trail for the balance of the year.  For the first time in 4 years, I feel as though I am starting the year with a fitness base I can build on.

2010 is going to be a year of taking care of some long-standing athletic goals and hopefully a peak performance or two.  Top of the list is to complete my 100th ultramarathon run (currently at 99).  Here are the specifics:

Running events:

  • Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50K - ultra #100
  • Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run
  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run
  • one of Chuckanut 50K, Dirty Duo 50K, Diez Vista 50K or Elk/Beaver 50K - age group recognition
  • Mountain Highway Madness (3 laps, so I can count it as an ultra)
  • The Marathon Shuffle in Powell River
  • North Shore Enduro (at least 50K)
  • Squamish Brick
  • XTC 50K
  • Knee Knacker (assuming I get in) #18
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent
  • STORMY (my 10th and I'm aiming to make it a 100-miler)
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Night Run
  • Forbidden Forest Run
  • Stein Valley (the whole enchillada)
  • Walk in the Park 54K
  • Mountain Highway Madness (let's just see after WITP)
  • Frosty Mountain 50K
  • Go Deep or Go Home
  • 2 hash house harriers runs (dates TBD)
  • top 10 in Bagger Challenge

Notes and Upside (resolution contest judges take note!)

  • 20 running events specified for my personal training and racing program.  I figure volunteering is as good as running when it comes to measuring success for a wounded warrior, and so is substituting one event for another in case of injury.
  • Participate in the Club.  I'd like to be in the top 3 of the CFA Club points competition.
  • I'll give myself double points for completing a road marathon and/or a 1/2 Ironman triathlon in 2010

Apart from the running events, I aim to:

  • put the remnants of past injuries behind me and start a 20-year streak of injury-free running
  • go to at least 50% of the Capilano Eagles Tuesday workouts (yes, rain or shine, so that makes 21+ times)
  • stretch more... to the point where I can touch my toes with my palm
  • get in the pool once every other week (21+ times) and survive the Duel at the Pool 5K
  • get on the bike once every other week (21+ times, stationery bike included)
  • get into the gym twice a week when I'm not running outside (50+ times)
  • get on the snowshoes once a week (while there is snow or 20+ times)
  • get in at least 10 days of downhill skiing (including at least 1 at Whistler)
  • share some of my experience with a few up-and-coming runners and race directors
  • volunteer (help with Club Fat Ass and the Capilano Eagles as a board member)
  • drink more water

By the way, if you get ambitious, you can also post your New Years resolutions on this page.

Genissa's 2010 Resolutions: Running and Beyond...

Hey everyone, here is my darling little list of resolutions big and small:

1. Chuckanut 50k (March 20th): Finish in under 7 hours

2. Lake Stevens Half-Ironman (August 15th): Finish. Period. Preferably without dying along the way!

3. Run enough that I don't have to worry about what I eat!!!

4. Participate in several CFA events and get to know other club members.

5. Create a second event down here stateside (because the Galbraith Mtn Tour was so much fun!)

I look forward to running with you all in the new year!

Genissa

Jason Eads' Resolutions 2010 – taking a BIG bite!

There is no one on this planet than I admired more than my Grandpa Eads. My grandpa always told me to set my goals high. Even if I didn't reach them, he argued, I'd get further along than if I had set the bar lower. Well, it stuck and this mentality is evident in my 2010 running plans. A couple of these races are tentative due to travel/logistical challenges I need to work out. Of course it ALL hinges on me staying healthy & injury free.

My ‘original plan’ was a little lame by some standards, and grossly outrageous by others. But hey, if I’ve learned anything about ultra running standards then I’ve learned that it’s all relative for each individual. Here’s a glance at my original plan:

1. Complete a 100 mile race in 2010
2. Run in at least one 100-mile race with Gilles Barbeau in 2010 (possibly could be combined with #1)
3. Participate in at least 2 CFA events in Vancouver in 2010
4. Host a legitimate "satellite" CFA event in Missouri, complete with REAL LIVE CANADIANS participating in 2010
5. Prove, ONCE AND FOR ALL, to Ean "Action" Jackson that I'm no sandbagger!

Here’s the new & improved, ‘Grandpa would be proud’ plan. This will, undoubtedly, evolve as things change throughout the year, but I’m going for it:

-March 20th – Howard L. Aslinger 24hr race (Cape Girardeau, MO) – REGISTERED

-April 11th – Go! St. Louis 1/2 Marathon pacer (Tentative) - NOT REGISTERED

-April 17th – Double Chubb 50k (Eureka, MO) - REGISTERED

-May 15th – Berryman 50m (Berryman Trail, Mark Twain National Forest, MO) - REGISTERED

-May 16th – GOTR 5k – I volunteer on the race committee (Forest Park, St. Louis, MO)

-June 5th – Vancouver 100k Tentative (North Vancouver, Canada) - NOT REGISTERED

-August 7th – STORMY 100m Tentative (Squamish, BC, Canada) - NOT REGISTERED

-August 27th - Hood to Coast Relay (Oregon) - REGISTERED

-September 5th – Flatlanders 12hr (City Park, Fenton, MO) - REGISTERED

-Spirit of the Osage 50k – Oct 17th (Frankenstein, MO) – REGISTERED

-Host a legitimate “satellite” CFA event in Missouri with participation from Canada (wink, wink - Craig & Gilles)

-Not be a burden on my very gracious friends in Vancouver & North Vancouver as I try to spend as much time as possible up there this year.

-Finally, be sure to give back more than my fair share to Club Fat Ass & St. Louis Ultrarunner’s Group by way of volunteering & contributing where possible.

I’m all ears on suggestions you all may have on how I can possibly get all of this done. I know there’s a WEALTH of experience & generosity within Club Fat Ass. That’s why I’m so in love with it – the fantastic people!

Best of luck to you on your 2010 goals, what ever they may be!

Keith's 2010 goals

1. Well 2009 saw the circumnavigation of the earth by bicycle, 44,500 kilometers of randonneuring brevets. I hope to make this 50,000 kilometers by the end of 2010.

2. Fat Ass 50 come rain or rain.

3. Knee Knacker for the seventh time if the lottery gods smile.

4. A road marathon, maybe Newport?

5. As many CFA events as possible, Capilano Night race and Pure Satisfaction for sure.

6. My first CanAm Pin which means doing a 1,200km brevet in Canada and the US, VanIsle 1200 and Cascade 1200?

7. Having fun whatever which way.

Kristie's planned acheivements for 2010

2009 was the year of least running, that's not going to happen this year. Here we go in chronological order:

  1. New Year's Fat Ass 50k - custom course since I am not allowed to run ... start with "the gang" at Brockton Oval at 9, power walk to Denman Running Room, meet friends, do the Resolution Run 5k still walking, then back to Brockton Oval and into the water. Party at Mosquito Grill later.
  2. Historic Half - run walk (see, I'm getting there)
  3. April Fool's Half Marathon - more run, less walk
  4. BMO Marathon - run walk PB
  5. Great Walk - 40 miles, PB (that will be easy, it's my first time)
  6. Baden Powell - end to end, don't think I can make KneeKnacker time so I'll just do it
  7. Vancouver Seawall 100k - 50k or more
  8. New Year's Fat Ass 50k - the whole enchilada and the swim
  9. In between all the above, recruit more CFA members and attend more events

Reagan White's 2010 Resolutions

2010, can't wait to meet you.

2009 saw me get back into running after a 17 year hiatus, and back then I just ran as a means to build cardio for another sport, rowing.  This past June I could only run for 2 or 3 minutes before taking a rest, but I slowly built up a base for three months before taking the plunge to run in the first organized running event of my life, the Club Fat Ass Mutha's 10K.  Since then, I've run four more trail events to close out 2009, most recently the Galbraith Mountain Tour at roughly 30K and 4hrs 15min.   In sum, rediscovering running (and specifically trail running in and around North Vancouver), along with joining Club Fat Ass in 2009 turned out to be lightning strikes that have charged me with positive energy, which I will continue to harness in 2010.

Goals for 2010 Running Events:

  • Finish in Top 10 in club point series standings, through participation in 12 Club events
  • Finish in Top 10 in bagger challenge point standings

Apart from the running events, I aim to:

  • volunteer (help Club Fat Ass as a steering committee member)
  • write 10 blog posts about my club experiences, from a new member's perspective

Sibylle's 2010 Fitness Goals

Funny how a torn muscle can dampen the excitement of making New Year's Resolutions.  If you would have asked me 6 weeks ago, I would have been full of plans.  Now I am a bit more reluctant, but writing down my goals for 2010 will help to achieve them!

Here we go:

Goal #1: Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50km.  I did have ambitions for improving my time, but because I am not quite recovered from my recent soleus tear, I will be overjoyed if I complete the full distance.

Goal #2: Marathon under 4h.  I would like to find a spring or fall marathon somewhere less than 1h drive from Vancouver.   Will this be the year I crack the 4h mark?

Goal # 3: Increase my running pace.  Speed workouts 1x a week

Goal # 4: Participating in at least the following other events/races:

  • Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run
  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run
  • Mountain Highway Madness (2laps)
  • XTC 50K
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Nite Night Run
  • Go Deep or Go Home
  • Sunshine in September
  • M&M's
  • Pure Satisfaction

Goal # 5: One other Ultra run

Goal # 6: cross training to avoid injury and keep those rusty joints nimble (bike, weight, skiing, badminton, swimming - all counts)

Goal # 7: Recover fully from the torn Soleus and remain injury free!

New Years Resolution Contest - 2009

And the winner is...Claudia!  She achieved 80% of her resolutions for 2009.  For doing the best job of hitting her goals, she wins a pair of running shoes from Kintec Footlabs.

All of the submissions related to 2009 resolutions are below.  Congrats to Claudia and to all of the other overachievers in the Club!

Bradley's Resolutions 09

New Years Resolution

  • Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50 & Freeze Your Fat Ass Swim - CFA Jan 1/2009 - make it to UBC with no broke bones or torn limbs I'm bringing my own ER Doctor
  •  Paris Marathon April 5 2009 - Paris France not Paris, Tennessee
  • Ottawa Marathon May 24 2009 - I figure since it's only 8 weeks from April I can just show up and run
  • run at least one other clubfatass event during 2009 (Mountain Highway Madness - Spring)
  • New York Marathon November 1 2009 - This will be my 4th year in the lottery so supposedly I'm guaranteed a spot.
  • run every event ( in my resolution) in my club fat ass shirt - I just haven't decided if I'll wash the shirt after every run or see how it holds up for a year without washing.

Added Bonus:

  • get to the gym 2 times a week
  • push my 3 boys in their stroller while running once a week
  • run at least one race in bare feet 10k HBC Run for Canada or one of equal value.
  • Go skiing at least twice in 2009
  • drink less water . Ean drinking more water just makes you pee more hence it slows you down.

Claudia Bullington's 2009 Fitness Resolutions

1. - Vancouver New Year's Day Fat Ass 50 km & Freeze Your Fat Ass Swim - CFA - Jan 1 / 2009.

2 -Participating in one Club Fat Ass events per month (or minimum 12/year)

3. Diez Vistas 50 km Trail Race Run in April

4. Do at least 60% of training for Knee Knacker (if I get in) on that deffect, do local trail races.

5. Knee Knacker in July (assuming I get in) - if not - run another 50 km race in Canada/USA

6. Another 50 km (or two) in the second part of the year. (Cle Elum and other)

7. A Road Marathon - (Hoping to Qualify for Boston).

8. At least 6 - 25 km or 30 km trail run races/events

9. If not running somewhere else, Run every two days in my neighborhoud - 7-10 miles.

10. Do 1 day of X-country ski/week (January-March only)

Ean Jackson's 2009 Fitness Resolutions

Last year was one of false starts and injuries.  As I write these resolutions, I am rolling and icing a left foot that is messed up with plantar fasciitis and a bit miffed I won't be able to run 50K on New Years Day.  Ah, but the glass is half-full...

2009 is going to be a year of getting back on the program, lots of fun runs with old pals and new, and because I didn't do it in 2008, the year I complete my 100th ultramarathon run (currently at 96).  Here are the specifics:

Running events:

  • Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50K
  • Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run
  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run
  • one of Chuckanut 50K (win bet with Melcher!) Dirty Duo 50K or Diez Vista 50K
  • Mountain Highway Madness (3 laps, so I can count it as an ultra)
  • North Shore Enduro (at least 50K)
  • Squamish Brick
  • XTC 50K
  • Knee Knacker (assuming I get in)
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent
  • STORMY
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Night Run
  • Forbidden Forest Run
  • Stein Valley (the whole meal deal)
  • Walk in the Park 54K (my 5th, so they retire my race number!)
  • Mountain Highway Madness (let's just see after WITP)
  • Go Deep or Go Home
  • 2 hash house harriers runs (dates TBD)

Notes and Upside (resolution contest judges take note!)

  • 19 running events specified for my personal training and racing program.  I figure volunteering is as good as running when it comes to measuring success for a wounded warrior, and so is substituting one event for another in case of injury.
  • I'd like to be in the top 3 of the CFA Club points competition.  Can do that injured or not by helping and picking up trash (Des take note.  I've got your number!!!)
  • if I can overcome the injuries, I'll give myself double points for completing a road marathon and/or a 1/2 Ironman triathlon in 2009

  • get in the pool once every other week (21+ times) and win the Duel at the Pool 5K
  • get on the bike once every other week (21+ times, stationery bike included)
  • get into the gym twice a week (100+ times)
  • get on the snowshoes once a week (while there is snow - 20+ times)
  • get in at least 15 days of downhill skiing (including at least 1 at Whistler)
  • share some of my experience with a few up-and-coming runners and race directors
  • volunteer (help with Club Fat Ass and the Capilano Eagles as a board member)
  • drink more water

By the way, if you get ambitious, you can also post your New Years resolutions on this page.

Michele's Rehab Resolutions 2009

A string of injuries (priformis, hamstring, SI joint, IT pain, hip socket pain/restriction , a mild groin pull . . . ) and a diagnosis of breast cancer have kept me from really attacking my running goals this past year. Seems I can beat cancer, but not the various leg maladies I’m still sporting. Could it be the fact that I continued to run, walk, ski throughout all my injuries and treatments? Hmm. Or that I was not always religious or exacting in the performance of my constantly evolving repertoire of physiotherapy exercises?? (“They tried to make me go to rehab, but I said ‘no, no, no . . .”).

So, this year is all about sucking up the fact that I may not run for quite awhile and committing myself totally to doing whatever I can do to get my running legs back, with as little whining as possible, including

• rehab exercises every day

• pilates 2 x week

• cardio at the gym 5 x week

• weight training 2-3 x week at gym (once I get permish . . .)

• walk/snowshoe outside ½ hour or more a day (as my sports doc allows . . .)

• volunteer at KK and at least one other event

If things go well and I am back running before the end of 2009, I hope to run

• Capilano Canyon Midsummer Run

• Sunshine in September

• Go Deep

• Pure Satisfaction

My blue sky list would include a fall marathon and the 2010 FA50, but honestly (and realistically), being able to run through the trees again before the year is out is my ultimate goal.

Seems Daunting When You List Them All Out

It really does seem daunting looking at them all. As I was scribbling them out, I got the warm fuzzy feeling, but as I look at the entire list, its a little more chilling than I thought it might be. Ah well .... looking forward to the challenge

 Running

  • Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50km
  • Seymour Yeti Race
  • Squamish Scrambler
  • Fisrt Half Half Marathon
  • Birch Bay Marathon
  • Dirty Duo Relay
  • Sun Run .... I know, I know .... but in under 40 minutes finally ... Therein lies the rub
  • Vancouver Marathon
  • North Shore Enduro
  • Iron Knee
  • Vancouver 100 (Which is QUITE daunting, but very exciting)
  • Seek the Peak
  • Knee Knacker (If I'm in)
  • Bills Great Peak Ascent
  • Stormy
  • Go Home
  • Kauai Marathon
  • Portland Marathon

 Non Strictly Running Endeavours

  • Snowshoe 25 or more times
  • Swim once a week -- This might be the hardest thing to accomplish as though I CAN swim, if I stop moving I tend to sink ... not really a lot of floating going on there
  • Compete an Olympic Distance Triathlon -- see resolution above re: swimming. One necessitates the other or they'll be fishing me out
  • Volunteer more for the Trail Running community
  • Run at least half of the Capilano Eagles sessions
  • Now ... this is going to be the hardest to measure ... but I'll know if its going on or not. I resolve to participate WITH GUSTO in anything that looks like fun while running/snowshoeing/playing outdoors. What I mean is that there should be no finishing an activity with a regret of .... "Wow, I wish I'd done THAT".

For the resolution immediately above, I have only to look to all of you for guidance or a positive endorsement of the sentiment as I see everyone involved with the Club pretty much running that as a mantra.

Happy New Year to All and good luck with any Resolutions!!!!

Sibylle's 2009 Fitness Goals

I've been rather timid announcing any athletic goals for 2009.  After my injury streak from last year, I didn't want to jinx my training with any lofty aspirations...

But, I guess I should put my plans for 2009 down, it's so easy to loose track:

Goal #1: Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50km, ideally beating my time from 2008 (please note, because of the adverse conditions we will experience for this event, I will give myself credit for partial completion)

Goal #2: Marathon under 4h.  I would like to find a spring or fall marathon somewhere less than 1h drive from Vancouver.

Goal # 3: Increase my running pace.  Speed workouts 1x a week

Goal # 4: Participating in following other events/races:

  • Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run
  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run
  • Mountain Highway Madness (2 laps)
  • XTC 50K
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Nite Night Run
  • Go Deep or Go Home
  • Sunshine in September
  • M&M's
  • Pure Satisfaction

Goal # 5: weight training in the gym 2x a week

Starting at the bottom of the fitness ladder...

I suppose we each have to start _somewhere_ and in so doing I choose to start here, at the bottom rung of my fitness goals.

Well perhaps not quite at the BOTTOM rung, but at least somewhere near that lowly starting point.

I'm a 35 year old gal who has a few lofty but achievable goals.

1. Finish the next 6 months of my 10 month Certified Dental Assisting course at VCC downtown (its a full time and VERY intense experience).

2. Be able to run 2.4 km in 15:25 minutes or less (13:27 minutes being an ideal goal)*

3. Be able to run 8 km in no specific amount of time.*

4. Be able to accomplish a minimum 7 regular pushups with as many as possible being an ideal number.*

5. Be able to do 12 sit-ups in one minute (achievable now)*

6. Be able to do 2 complete chin-ups from a full dangle all the way to the correct position and back.*

7. To lose approximately 20-30lbs.

8. Have a Handgrip strength of at least 48 (lbs?)*

FORESEEABLE HINDRANCES WHICH MAY TEMPT MY MOTIVATION:

-I only have (at minimum) until July 2009 to accomplish these fitness goals

-I am a full time student on a limited budget living downtown

-I live with a at guy who is the farthest thing from being fit or outdoor energetic

-The guy mentioned above doesn't share my euthasium for a military re-enlistment as a Dental Technician* and thus communication about this avenue are avoided.

*-With additional importance for my military re-enlistment goals, the better fit I am, the easier basic will be during that exhaustive 13 week period. (I've already experienced 5 weeks of basic to know what to expect)

WHAT AM I DOING TO WORK TOWARDS THESE GOALS? (Living downtown without a car on a limited budget)

-I've signed up for a gym membership (Fitness World) - the 24hr downtown location is a block away.

-I've signed up for the LEARN TO RUN program at the Running Room store a couple of blocks away to get me out and motivated. (It starts January 5th)

-I purchased a second-hand treadmill for our livingroom

-I have made resolutions with myself to adopt the same sleep schedule experienced while previously in Basic Training to give me more time for morning fitness/treadmill time

-With previous success in managing my diet, I'll be cooking my own meals once again (my laziness in simply consuming what is available/made by my boyfriend has lead to unwanted weight gain)

PREVIOUS RUN SUCCESS

I've previously finished the Sun Run in under and hour (although I remember quite vividly that it wasn't pain or gasp free). Its been some time since that accomplishment.

IN SUMMARY:

I KNOW I can do this - if you want something enough - then if its important to you - you and only you can make it happen. (I just hope that by being here, even if in text form, that any support I can glean will get me closer to my goals).

:)

I'm starting officially on January 1st.

New Years Resolution Contest - 2008

And the winner is...Baldwin!

Baldwin rated himself 91% on achieving his resolutions for 2008.  I was tempted to deduct some points for not washing his CFA collectors shirt all year, but his lead was impressive and he truly deserved his win.

Baldwin received a pair of running shoes from Club Business member, Kintec Footlabs.

You can see Baldwin's winning resolutions, and all of the other ones for 2008 below.

Baldy's 2008 resolutions

For 2008, I want to (in no particular order):

PB a marathon.  Portland October 5, 2008 - 3:57:40, Portland October 2005 - 4:13:36, 16 minute PB!

PB a 50K. - Diez Vista 50K April 5, 2008 - 6:36:12, Diez Vista 50K April 2004, 7:38. 1 hour PB!

PB a 50 miler - Mt Si 50 miler April 13, 2008, 8:39, previous best, Elk Beaver 10:16!

Complete a 100K - Miwok 100k May 3, 2008, 15:20 I completed despite severe electrolyte depletion.

PB a 100 miler- Stormy 100 miler August 8-9, 2008. 29:30ish. About 4.5 hour PR! Good enough!

log over 1000 miles in training and races (I have a GPS for this)

and most importantly make my no stink, long sleeve Chitosante tech shirt to be classified as a biological hazard.

Ean Jackson's 2008 Fitness Resolutions

One of my BHAGs (Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals) is to run my 100th ultramarathon during my first year in the 50+ age group. That would be 2008. Given that I'm now on track with 94 ultras under my belt, I'm soon going to have to pick the run I celebrate as my 100th.

For nobody other than myself, here are my draft 2008 fitness resolutions:

Running events:

  • Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50K
  • Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run
  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run
  • one of Dirty Duo 50K,Diez Vista 50K or Chuckanut 50K
  • Mountain Highway Madness (3 laps, so I can count it as an ultra)
  • North Shore Enduro (at least 50K)
  • Squamish Brick
  • XTC 50K
  • Knee Knacker (assuming I get in)
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent
  • STORMY
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Night Run
  • Forbidden Forest Run
  • Stein Valley (the whole meal deal)
  • Walk in the Park 54K (my 5th year, so they give me my own race number!)
  • Mountain Highway Madness (let's just see after WITP)
  • Go Deep or Go Home
  • 2 hash house harriers runs (dates TBD)

It's a nutty idea, but it would also be cool to run my 100th ultra as a 100-miler or at least be able to say that in 2008, I ran my 100th ultra and completed a 100-miler.

Apart from the running events, I aim to:

  • get my knackered knees back into shape so I run without pain
  • go to at least 50% of the Capilano Eagles Tuesday workouts (yes, rain or shine, so that makes 21+ times)
  • stretch more... to the point where I come at least close to touching my toes
  • get in the pool once every other week (21+ times) and win the Duel at the Pool 5K
  • get on the bike once every other week (21+ times)

Ryan's 2008 Fitness Resolution List

In this upcoming year, 2008, I want to focus on overcoming the injuries I have suffered through over the last couple of years.

To accomplish this my goal is daily practise of pelvic aligment, core stabilisation and stretching, especially of chronically tight hamstrings and hips. Also use of the Indo Board and balance drills to improve alignment and balance.

In addition one of my main goals is to fully incorporate cross training into my weekly workout schedule. The main activities being

  • swimming twice per week (once 1500m, once 2 X 1500m),
  • cycling one long bike ride (3 hours plus)
  • in addition to doing my commuting on my bike whenever possible,
  • barefoot running,
  • snowshoe running at least once per week through the winter, and
  • strength training four times per week (twice upper body, twice lower body).

I am going to start the year off on a four month marathon training plan, building from 60 to 100 km per week. My main goals are to complete all 5 runs every week, and to increase my tempo run pace from 4:25/km to 4:10/km by April. After that I will move to a modified 6 day per week plan to get ready for the Knee Knacker, assuming I get in.

I plan to attend all of the Knee Knacker Sunday training runs, and assuming I can get a shift that finishes early enough on Wednesday all of those as well. The races I have planned for the year so far are:

  • New Years Day Fat Ass 50km,
  • Squamish Scrambler Snow Shoe Run,
  • Capilano Canyon Night Run,
  • Spring Mountain Highway Madness,
  • Vancouver Sun Run,
  • Big Sur International Marathon,
  • Vancouver 100,
  • Knee Knacker (subject to lottery),
  • Montreal Marathon,

In addition I will complete as many as possible of the Timex Series, 5 Peaks Series, Gutbuster Series and as many Club Fat Ass events as I can make it to.

Sibylle's 2008 Fitness Goals

I know, I know...it's a bit early to post New Year's Resolutions... but with the rain a nd fog we've had lately it almost feels like it is November and time to get ready ;-)

I foolishly posted my musings about 2008 a while ago including some lofty goals.  Since we actually have a contest going for New Year's Resolutions Ean has bugged me ever since to post my goals in the contest...So here I go:

Goal #1: Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50km, ideally beating my time from 2006.

Goal #2: Marathon under 4h.  I would like to find a spring marathon somewhere less than 1h drive from Vancouver.  Failing that, I'll try Vancouver and have fall marathon (Kelowna) as back-up.

Goal # 3: Assuming I get in, participating and finishing at the 20th Kneeknacker North Shore Trail Run 50km.

Goal # 4: Participating in following other events/races:

  • Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run
  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run
  • Dirty Duo 25K
  • Mountain Highway Madness (2 laps)
  • Run To the Clouds
  • Squamish Brick ?
  • XTC 50K
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Nite Night Run
  • Go Deep or Go Home
  • Go Home
  • Pure Satisfaction

Since it is so early in the year I reserve the right to "fiddle" with these goals depending on  my training, health status and injuries...

Ean Jackson's 2007 Fitness Resolutions

It's Sunday 31 December 2006.  I just assessed my 2006 fitness resolutions and gave myself a 75% or "C" grade.  Room for improvement!

One of my BHAGs (Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals) is to run my 100th ultramarathon during the year I turn 50.  I recently turned 49.  Given that I ended 2006 with 83 ultras under my belt, I'm going to have to run at least 10 ultras in 2007 if I'm to have a realistic crack at achieving my big goal.  I'm also injured and out of shape.

When I look back on my resolutions for 2006 and think about how often I referred back to them over the year, I've come to the conclusion that writing goals down really helps me to achieve them.  So, for nobody other than myself, here are my 2007 fitness resolutions:

Running events:

  • Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50K
  • Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run
  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run
  • Chuckanut 50K
  • Diez Vista 50K
  • Mountain Highway Madness (3 laps, so I can count it as an ultra)
  • North Shore Enduro (at least 50K)
  • Wendy's 50K
  • pace Wade Repta at the Western States 100-mile run
  • XTC 50K
  • Knee Knacker (assuming I get in)
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent
  • STORMY
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Nite Night Run
  • Forbidden Forest Run
  • Juan de Fuca Trail Run
  • Mountain Highway Madness (3 laps, as above)
  • Go Deep or Go Home
  • 2 hash house harriers runs (dates TBD)

Things happen.  Race cancellations, work or family commitments may mess up my plans to do any one of the above.  I also may run other events.  For the purposes of my resolutions, then, I'd be very happy to 12 out of the 17 listed above and get in at least 8 ultras.  For the purposes of keeping score, I'll give myself credit for an equal trade.  (E.g. no penalty if I trade one 50K run for another, for example.)

  • get into the gym twice a week (100+ times)
  • get on the snowshoes once a week (while there is snow - 20+ times)
  • get in at least 15 days of downhill skiing (including several at Whistler)
  • share some of my experience with a few up-and-coming runners and race directors
  • volunteer (help with Club Fat Ass and the Capilano Eagles as a board member)
  • drink more water

By the way, if you get ambitious, you can also post your New Years resolutions on this site.

New Years Resolution Contest - 2006

Club Fat Ass New Years Resolution Contest

Boy, the Steering Committee sure had a hard time deciding on a winner.

There were 17 participants.  Of those, Baldwin, Carlos, Craig, Gary, Keith, Sibylle, Andrea, and Ean submitted a final evaluation.  We eliminated Sibylle and Ean for obvious reasons.  Keith gave himself 85%, but didn't really justify his grade; Craig gave himself 75% and did justify; Baldwin gave himself a B+ for 5/8 goals met; Gary gave himself 65% with reasons; Carlos rated himself 7/10; and Andrea rated herself 7/12.

In the end it was a close call, but Craig had the highest percentage of fullfilled resolutions accompanied by an explanation.  Congrats to Craig!  He will receive a pair of runners kindly provided by our sponsor North Shore Athletics.

Ean Jackson's 2006 Fitness Resolutions

This is bizarre for a last-minute, non-committal kind of guy to actually plan out a year in advance! Here goes:

Running events:

  • Vancouver New Years Day Fat Ass 50 (Since I host it, I kind of have to run it, don't I?)
  • Squamish Scrambler Snowshoe Run
  • Capilano Canyon MardiGras Night Run
  • Mountain Highway Madness (at least 2X)
  • North Shore Enduro
  • XTC
  • Knee Knacker (assuming I get in)
  • Bill's Great Peak Ascent
  • STORMY
  • Capilano Canyon Midsummer Nite Night Run
  • Forbidden Forest Run
  • Mountain Highway Madness
  • Silvertip
  • Go Deep or Go Home
  • 2 hash house harriers runs (dates TBD)

Apart from the running events, I aim to:

  • go to at least 50% of the Capilano Eagles Tuesday workouts (yes, rain or shine!)
  • stretch more...to the point where I can touch my toes
  • get in the pool once a week (on average)
  • get on the bike once a week (on average)
  • get into the gym twice a week (on average)
  • get on the snowshoes once a week (on average while there is snow)
  • get in at least 10 days of downhill skiing at Grouse and 5 at Whistler
  • not get injured any worse than I already am!
  • share some of my experience with a few up-and-coming runners and race directors
  • drink more water and less beer

That's 25 resolutions. Yikes!

Andrea's Annual Achievements (Resolutions)

OK, I"m a newbie to the club but am a big "goals" person, so here's my preliminary attempt to lay out 2006...

  1. Take the inagural "leap" and train & complete a 50km run (Conquer the Canuck? Run for the Toad?)
  2. Run Mississauga marathon and do it sub 3:15 (oooh, the pressure)
  3. Do more yoga (at least 1x/week)
  4. Around the Bay 5km (and don't wimp out due to crappy snow & freezing cold conditions)
  5. Participate in at least 1 fatass event (3 Dolla Bill Run?)
  6. Volunteer at 1 or more trail, road or indoor races
  7. Compete in all 5 Peaks races (vs. last year's 4) and finish better (faster) than my 2004 season placing
  8. Host a jog-a-lager FATASS event (if allowed?) after obtaining trademark rights from the coyote of course
  9. Run an out-of-town province event or race
  10. Get out snowshoeing at least 1x this year (but hopefully more than that)
  11. Enter & complete in a duathlon this year for fun & for some x-training
  12. Keep a DAILY running/activity log for the entire year.

That's the initial list, I'll see what else I can come up with over the next 2 weeks...

Baldwin's "Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time..." for 2006

Well, I hopefully have the Longest Title award wrapped up.

First of all, the Big Three,

Apr 1/06 - American River 50 Mile Endurance Run, Sacramento (guess I'm going to miss the Burnaby Mountain CFA event)

July 8/06 - Knee Knacker (if I get in) or

July 29/06 White River 50 miler, WA (if I don't. I really hope I get in)

Nov/06 - Haney 2 Harrison 100K (I'm gonna need a bigger boat)

Personal stuff

A sub 4:00 marathon and I'll have two cracks at it: Penticton (May) and Portland (October) (why only sub 4:00? Well, thereby hangs a tale...)

60 days (of continuous) Bikrams Yoga Challenge (Yes, it's the hot one)

As many CFA events as I can manage and justify it as training: FA 50, Mardi Gras Night run, Mtn Highway Madness, etc.

and finally...

Put less noodles in my chicken noodle soup cooker, as it absorbs valuable sodium and use 2 cloves of garlic rather than 2 bulbs.

Carlos' 2006 plans...

To get my goals set, I find it easier to tell someone what I'm doing, and then I really have to do it! So hear goes.... Training:- Forget about trying to convert unmeasurable training runs to Kilometres or Miles.(for us trail runners, it's just a hangover from our 10K days...) Up my average training hours per week to 12,throughout the year, with some more roads and trails. Make one of my runs at least 4 hours.(this will give me hours in the bank plus a couple of rest days) Get in some dawn running in the spring. (What could be better than to start your working day with a 2 hour blast of the 'hood.) Cut down on the caffiene and get to sleep by 23:00 at the latest. Ultra races:- Lord Hill 50K Snohomish, WA (Feb) Mountain Highway Madness (Gold?) Chuckanut Mountain 50K Bellingham, WA Diez Vista 50K E/B Ultra 50K Skyline XTC 50K Great Walk 64K ultra.(going for a three-pete win.) The Full Monty 50K.(I'm not doing it alone!) Great Lake Walk 56K.(Lake Cowichan) Javelina Jundred (100 Miles in Arid-Zona.) H2H (maybe?) Plus as many CFA events as I can squeeze in, i.e. the Bunny and the M&M If I can do all of those I will be one happy Jackal. I Love This Sport!

Cheryl Johnson's 2006 Resolutions

Wow. The resolutions that have been posted are totally inspiring. Amazing and you are just the people to do it. But I have to say, don't wait. Do it now. Time goes by in a blink.

My main, number one 2006 goal is to run faster. I'm having fun but I need to work on that. It can be measured easily because I'm doing many of the same races, plus a few:

  • Dirty Duo
  • Kusam Klimb (awesome run in Sayward)
  • Keith's Idaho Run
  • Fluffy Bunny
  • Fall Mountain Hwy Madness x3
  • Rubble Creek
  • Kelowna Marathon to qualify for Boston
  • as many Fat Ass Runs as possible
  • Crew as much as possible, Vancouver 100, Badwater or WS, H2H Ultra

As Carlos says, I love this sport!

Cheryl Johnson

Craig Moore's 2006 Goals

Here's my 2006 athletic wish list. A long time ago I thought I wasn't very competitive ... but apparently I am so watch out!

1) Do at least 1/2 hour of heart raising activity six days per week, for the entire year, including: Run, walk, swim, hike, snowshoe, bike, lift weights, etcetera ... does sex count? If it does I'm golden.

2) Achieve a new Personal Best time at the Knee Knacker (working toward a sub 7:30h) ... better luck next year.

3) Do 50 pushups in a row ... I'm pretty sure I did 50 push ups this year ...

4) Do 10 complete full body chin-ups in a row ... I'll give myself 10 pretty good chin ups in a row with room for improvement.

5) Think longingly about doing the Forbidden Forest Run and hopefully be in good enough shape to accept an invitation ... favourable intuition prevailed ... I passed this time until a better opportunity arrises ;)

6) Do the Fluffy Bunny Trail Run and not be concerned about getting lost (it's a CFA event after all) ... something about this being "the toughest trail run ever" hasn't scared me off.  I'm feeling good enough to think about doing it still for the first time.

7) Dirty Duo 25 Km ... oh ya baby!  number 2 on the new course.

8) Do the CFA Vancouver World Run 50K on March 26 with Jesper Olsen ... yup but a shortened version 'cause I'm just not a road runner after all.

9) Crew the Crew and run one section at the new CFA Vancouver 100 trail run in June ... it was allll goooood!!!!  I watched the guys have a super day and joined Mike for the section between Cleveland Dam and Mtn Hwy.

10) Run the CFA Pure Satisfaction 24K in December ... short and fast for me this year and feeling awesome. Since there was one more event added after mine (Galbraith Mtn Run) I did it for good measure as well.  Nothing like a good run in December and it was awesome too.

Gary's "Here We Go...2006?"

Well I guess if I get a shot a a free pair of shoes I'll try and come up with something.

My main goal for 2006 is to have my team on the finishers list for Primal Quest. This promises to be the biggest and badest expedition adventure race in the last 5 years, we are going in with a team of complete rookies! We have already started training and no matter what happens, we have to finish. Something interesting is that my personal total adventure racing experience to date is a culmative 700k, PQ will cover 800k through 8 disciplines! I honestly think we will have a shot at top 30 (out of 90) if things go well for us...this is an outside goal we are shooting for.

I haven't had the time to think beyond PQ yet, so I'll be improvising as I go here:

-Complete a 100km ultra run, and have a respectable finish time

-Break the single lap record for Mountain Highway Madness, presently 1h0m20s, and throw in a second lap if feeling up to it after this. This is something I told Jackson I'd do in 05 but my race schedule did not allow me to do either of the runs. MHM is the first trail run I ever did in 2004, my life hasn't quite been the same since.

-I would set a goal of a 5h25m KKer, but since this race is just four days after PQ, I will regretfully have to withdraw my name from the entrant list, event though I was the first person to sign up for 2006. This will be my goal time when I next get to do KKer.

-I will hopefully be taking part in Diez Vista, and as long as I get in I am setting a goal of a top 5 finish. As long as the 'top guns' aren't out I might have shot, but ya have to aim high!

-To outright win a race, whether an AR or trail run, it doesn't matter, I just wanna win!!. I promised my girlfriend that I'd win a race for her in 05, unfortunately I did not get to do as many trail runs as I would have liked. I am focused on building a solid adventure racing base and this often takes me away from my strongest discipline of running, and puts me on my bike or in a kayak. If I can find a trail run that Ean, Andy and Dom don't know about I may have a shot!

-Dirty Duo, solo (run/bike). Top five finish, with fastest run time.

-Vancouver Sun Run, beat last years time of 37m51s

-Climb/scramble Mount Curry in Pemberton, Sky Pilot in Squamish and The Black Tusk in Whistler

-Significantly improve my navigational skills

-Siginficantly improve my kayaking abilities

-Stretch regularly...well at least more than last year!

-Top five finish at a Yeti snowshoe race

-Canoe/kayak trip from Squamish to Anvil Island

-Remember that I have a girlfriend, she actually likes to spend time with me, and I have to fit her into all of this somewhere!

That's it, I just took myself out of the 'running' for the free pair of shoes!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL, AND GOOD LUCK TO ALL RESOLUTIONERS (it's a word, I made it)

GARY ROBBINS, SQUAMISH

1. Leadville.......went and completed it first time out with 29 hours 31 minutes.  I was very happy about that.

2. Run more with son.   This one we did a little but not as much as I wanted.   Work more on this.

3. Focus more on having fun.   Done.....I had much more fun and less seriousness with training and running.   Still got things done but did'nt stress over it.

4.  Successful event.....it went so, so, with only 4 of us running it.  But I didn't stress over it.

5.  Stay injury free.     Did it!!  Very happy about it.

Thanks to all of you for your friendship and fun this year.

Michele's 2006 Resolutions

My biggest goal, and one I started working on by joining CFA, is to focus on enjoying running instead of obsessing about pace and PBs. Since this is “non-measurable

Sibylle's Resolutions

You may have noticed Ean likes list and checks them twice...He ran (pun intended) his New Years Resolutions by me, to give them a reality check in regards to time commitment and injury prevention (or should I say injury recovery). His list is ready to go. It's huge. It's wishful thinking...but as his supporting, loving wife I believe he can do it and promise to kick him out of bed on a rainy race morning...just so he will reach his goals for 2006.

When he ran his list by me, he implied I do the same. Problem is, I am half as organized and committed when it comes to New Years Resolutions. I am realistic about the time commitments it takes to train and the logistics involved taking a day of just for a run. Notice, I use "run" opposed to "race"...My nickname is Turtlepace...no racing here ;-)

So, taking a realistic look ahead my first running resolution comes easy, as I already announced it to the world, registered and somewhat trained (one might argue).

  • Participate and finish the Vancouver New Year's Day Fat Ass 50 Run. I already lined up childcare (thank you, Linda Leigh) and running buddies. Just need to keep the partying under control the night before.
  • Do an out of town run - ok this is not measurable. Go on a road trip to do an out-of-town run. I am thinking of the North Idaho Kick Ass 25 (miles) hosted by Keith Thompson in July.
  • Capilano Night Run x2
  • Weight Training twice a week
  • be more consistent with midweek training runs, aim for 2 runs mid week of about 60min length.
  • Improve my time on the Capilano Night Run course. Ok, you need to take my word for it, as I am sweeping during the actual event, so the time improvement can happen during a training run.
  • Be aid station captain again at the Cleveland Dam aid station during the KneeKnacker.
  • Participate in a trail maintenance day
