16 June 2007 - Slack Ass Starters
It was a small crowd that assembled to run the inaugural Slack Ass 50 in Edmonton. Looks like they had fun anyway. Alli and Chuck out did themselves crewing for Nathan and providing GPS data. Nathan was thrilled (good on him for toughing out 50 miles on his own) with his first Club Fat Ass event and is thinking of starting an event in Lethbridge. Way to go!

Good On Ya
Glad to hear you got a kick out of the GPS... that was Dad's idea. We sure did a lot of learning through out this whole process - thanks for being such a patient part of it!
Maybe we can go for a long run sometime when I ramp up the training...

Thanks for the update,
I will be more than happy to help you with an event in Lethbridge. I do recommend to set it up as a Flash event. Seems to be easier for events where there is no large established CFA member base and no other events. Please contact me if you want to talk more.
I see you got your shirt in the mail ;-)
Happy Trails,
Sibylle

I have not worn a watch in years so my actual time is a slight guess. The GPS recorded my walking water breaks but when I went inside to fill up my water or stopped to pass water it would stop recording time. I would guess my actual time to be more or less about 8:00 (what I was aiming for).

PS: Could you explain the Flash events? Sorry I'm still an Ultra Noob (just a fast one ).
Flash Event
Hi Nathan,
Thanks for the time. I included them in the above results page.
Flash events are events hosted through Club Fat Ass. We found that new hosts in areas where there are no CFA events and no established member base (like in the Greater Vancouver area) host were enthusiastic, but had a hard time attracting participants. The idea behind CFA is to offer low key, low cost fun events, but while the $50 membership is a no brainer anywhere with 2 or more events, it's a tougher sell elsewhere. We added Flash events to help new hosts to get their feet wet and make it easier to attract participants. While all CFA events are supposedly low key (some hosts really outdo themselves to in providing support, aid, prizes and other neat touches), Flash events are even easier to manage. For starters, instead of the 8 page event website for a scheduled event that the host and I build, Flash events get a one page calendar entry (registration page can be added if desired). Any member can post (and host) a Flash event (in the left side nav bar, look for your nav box. You will see a link to create content and from there you can choose "event". Participants do not have to be members of CFA. That's basically it in a nutshell. There is some more info at: http://www.clubfatass.com/cfa-event-types
Hope that helps,
Sibylle
Did you have fun?
Congrats, Alli!
I just came back from the pub after having a few cool ones with your brother. We were scheming up a couple of adventure runs for later in the summer. 'Hope you can join us!
My first event was called the Fat Ass 50. I didn't tell folks if it was a 50K or a 50 mile, though. Straight up, I didn't know how long it was. Nobody asked about the distance until about 6 hours into it when, during an aid station break at McDonald's, about 1/2 the field began to grumble and went home. That half of the starters never spoke to me again, the other 1/2 came back the next year and brought 10 friends each. Now I stop accepting people into my run after the first 100 have signed up.
There are leaders and there are followers. Stick it out! Maybe I'll see you at the start next year?
Rock on!
Wow - now that's impressive! At least our one guy seems pretty happy ;) Maybe even at the FatAss 50!
I would love to train it up with you. I got accepted into the AC100 in September so I have plenty of long runs ahead!
