Flash - Snowshoe for the Haggis - 2012

4 Feb 2012 12:00
4 Feb 2012 23:00
Location:
North Vancouver, BC Canada

What: A snowshoe trek of approximately 10 kms followed by a full-on traditional Robbie Burns celebration with elements of poetry, music, address to the haggis, feasting, and drinking of Scotch whisky.

Why: Because when we had a run for the haggis a couple years ago, the haggis almost got away, and last year the beastie made it from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove before we caught up with it!

Who: Anyone who can walk with big feet and stay awake long enough to party afterwards.

The Trek:  The trek will start at the North Shore Rescue SAR Station, Mount Seymour.  The building is just to the North (left) of the Ski Patrol Building.  Listen for the bagpipes to guide you there.  The route will take us up to Brockton Point via the winter access trail.  From there the more ambitious can bag First Pump and then return.  We will then follow the crest of Suicide Bluffs down to Dog Mountain and then follow the Dog Mtn trail out to the parking lot.  Winter kilts are appropriate attire for the trek.

The Burns Party: Start at 6:00 pm at my house in Lynn Valley. Potluck style. Please bring an appie or desert as well as your bagpipes, guitar or harmonica and an appetite for boiled guts and oatmeal in a sheep's stomach. Please also pair up with another couple of participants to buy a nice bottle of whisky for the tasting (bonus points if it is an Islay Malt). Wear your kilt if you have one and at least a good fake Scottish accent if you don't. If you play an instrument suitable for a ceilidh, bring it.

May be prizes for the most appropriate attire and best poetry reading!

* Special Event Rider: The Burns Party is not vegetarian friendly. If you are easily offended by eating sheep innards, consumption of alcohol and singing of bawdy songs then this event is not for you! As Robbie Burns put it:

Wantonness for ever mair,
Wantonness has been my ruin
Yet for a' my dool and care,
It's wantonness for ever!
I hae lov'd the Black, the Brown,
I hae lov'd the Fair, the Gowden:
A' the colours in the town
I hae won their wanton favour.
