Flash - Pure Foolishness 50K

26 Feb 2011 08:00
26 Feb 2011 08:00
Location:
Deep Cove, North Vancouver, BC

What: A 50K run between Deep Cove and Lynn Canyon.  Since this is a Fat Ass event you may, of course, do whatever you distance like.

Why: Because of few club members have signed up for various 100 mile trail races, including the prestigious Western States 100 Endurance Run and a grueling series of four 100 mile races called the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning.

Who: The Fools and anyone who wants to join in the fun.

Where: Meet at Panorama Park in Deep Cove, North Vancouver, BC

When: Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 08:00

Route: The Pure Foolishness 50K will consist of two loops between Deep Cove and the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge.

Course Description:  Start at the fire hydrant at the entrance to the Panorama Park parking lot in Deep Cove.  Go north to the Baden Powell trail and follow it to the intersection of Old Buck trail.  Go down Old Buck and turn right onto Bridle Path, also call Horse Trail.  Continue on Bridle Path to the intersection with Baden Powell.  Go left and follow Baden Powell to the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge.  Cross the bridge to the washrooms and water.  Refresh yourself and go back the way you came.

Aid: There isn't any, so be prepared to be self-sufficient. There should be water at Deep Cove and at the Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge washrooms. Of course we will also have access to our vehicles when we return to Deep Cove at the end of each loop.

Results: Fill in the results sheet on the windshield of Karl's silver Dodge Grand Caravan, 280 LCT, which will be parked in or near Panorama Park, or email your distance and time to Karl through the email link at the bottom of this event site.

Motto: Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool.

Entry: There is no fee and you don't need to be a member of Club Fat Ass to participate in a Flash event, however whining is not allowed. No registration is required but please indicate your participation via the comment form below. You are responsible for your own well being and safety and must be self sufficient.

 1:35 for Claudia and myself.

Fun frosty foolishness

50K option @ 7:36, with one of the four pass-bys via the Seymour Grind Route, a nasty hellpath of vertical ice, but probably shorter by 1-2K than the official Buck-Bridal route.

Thanks for organising -- my face will thaw out in a few hours.

Bonus Distance

Don't tell anyone David, but the 25K is measured on the Seymour Grind route.  People got a bit of bonus distance on the Old Buck-Bridle Path route.

A wee dram or two will help you thaw out.

Gotta Love the Bonus!

Thanks again for organizing Karl!

Yeah, my Garmin said 54k by the end. Then again, it also says 8,400' of climbing so clearly it can't be trusted. I don't remember any climbing.

30/50

I'm down for the first lap (plus a bit) and won't whine at all. Though at least one of the two Hs might...

HEY!!  Uncalled

HEY!!  Uncalled for!! (Slightly true, perhaps, but uncalled for!)

I'm not sure what distance this H will be doing. Likely just to the bridge, then home, and more on Sunday.

Is the other H even coming?

Developing a plan!

Goal: finish before dark... (perchance to dream)

Sung to the tune of: "I'll be there"

"I'll be there...LATE"...

Well planning turned to waiting until morning to see how the weather would be... Call it last minute planning...

At -5 before windchill considerations, multiple layers were donned, and then the final hmming and hawing over gloves/mittens/hats/buff resulted in a late departure to the start location. Red lights and all, I decided to pull into the Old Buck Trailhead Parking Lot at the base of Mt Seymour Rd. More deliberations resulted in a 8:30 start up Old Buck. Managed to say hello to a number of the runners who actually started from Deep Cove a couple of times! and finally decided when I saw Karl and John that I would turn my Pure Foolishness into a Custom Less Foolish option: an O.B.U.D.S.T.S run -- Old Buck Up Down Seymour To Seymour Rd run. This iteration was a 2h45m run of 3 loops from the Trailhead Parking Lot to the first crossing with Mt Seymour Rd and back (each loop 5.5km, 320m+/-), for a total of 16.5km. Enjoyed a variety of conditions: clear trails, snow pack, gentle snow fall. The big thing though was running for the first time with 'poles' -- result: not bad! Key is though to use them, otherwise they are heavy in the hands... Decided to stop at 3 loops so I could make an important phone call :)

Result: Didn't run as far or as long as I had initially planned -- oh well, that happens sometimes... Definitely finished before dark ;) Post run: Finished the run off with a stop at the Parkgate Bean Around the World with a 'Bean-size' Decaf Coffee Milk soup (aka -- 20 oz cafe latte) and a orange-cranberry muffin... numm...
