Baldwin's "Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time..." for 2006

Well, I hopefully have the Longest Title award wrapped up.

First of all, the Big Three,

Apr 1/06 - American River 50 Mile Endurance Run, Sacramento (guess I'm going to miss the Burnaby Mountain CFA event)

July 8/06 - Knee Knacker (if I get in) or

July 29/06 White River 50 miler, WA (if I don't. I really hope I get in)

Nov/06 - Haney 2 Harrison 100K (I'm gonna need a bigger boat)

Personal stuff

A sub 4:00 marathon and I'll have two cracks at it: Penticton (May) and Portland (October) (why only sub 4:00? Well, thereby hangs a tale...)

60 days (of continuous) Bikrams Yoga Challenge (Yes, it's the hot one)

As many CFA events as I can manage and justify it as training: FA 50, Mardi Gras Night run, Mtn Highway Madness, etc.

and finally...

Put less noodles in my chicken noodle soup cooker, as it absorbs valuable sodium and use 2 cloves of garlic rather than 2 bulbs.

Report Card for 2006

The Big 3

American River 50 miler - Check! Grade A (My first 50 miler, started slow on the road, had an awesome time in the mud, qualified for Western States!)

Knee Knacker - Check! Grade C- (I was going through some personal issues and didn't really enjoy this one as I should have)

White River 50 miler Check! Grade B+
(I wasn't supposed to do this one as I had already gotten in for Knee Knacker and this was just two weeks after KK, but a free entry is still a free entry.)

H2H - DNR - Did Not Register - Grade: N/A
During H2H training I suffered a lower body injury (knee) due too many miles and not enough recovery. Aahh, there's always next year.

So 2 out of 3 key races plus 1 bonus race!  B+!

Personal stuff

Sub 4:00 marathon

No marathons this year. All my training was geared towards endurance, not so much speed.
The marathon I was supposed to run in December...was the day after Galbraith Mountain Tour.

Grade: N/A

60 days of continuous Bikram Yoga.

I did do 60 days of Bikrams, but it's spread out over the entire year.

Grade: D

As many CFA events as I can manage and justify it as training.

Well according to the 2006 point series standings I've completed 18 events, I think I did 20, but it's close enough. Running in the North Shore, especially the Baden Powell, and up and down Mountain Hwy made me mentally and physically tougher in all of my races.

Grade: A

Overall Grade: B+

Oh, I almost forgot, I only use 2 cloves of garlic in my chicken noodle soup, so it it less, but since I'm only making portions for myself, it's actually stronger and has saved my Fat Ass on more than one occasion.

Updates on my resolutions

Well it had to happen, all those miles with little recovery finally caught up to me. I seem to have caught Ean's knee injury bug and was unable to train or run H2H. In addition I haven't been doing any Bikrams yoga lately much less for 60 days.  I am finally back running although at a reduced level and am trying to bring my fitness level to post KK standards. I don't know if I should chance running a marathon to see if I can run sub 4:00, there's one in Washington late December so I might go for that.

Ean told me that I should list all the CFA events I've done as one of my resolutions was to complete as many events and justify it as training so here goes in no particular order, events that I have participated as an entrant or as crew:

Run to the Clouds - crew
Bill's Great Peak Ascent - entrant
XTC - entrant
North Shore Enduro - entrant
Spring Mountain Hwy Madness - entrant
Fall Mountain Hwy Madness - entrant
Mardi Gras Night Run - entrant
Midsummer's Night Dream - entrant
1/2 Monty - entrant
FFR - my evil twin
New Years Fat Ass 50 - entrant
Mary's Happy Trails - entrant
Go Home 20 - entrant
Wendy's Get your Fat Ass of the Couch - entrant
World Run - entrant
Vancouver 100 - entrant and crew
Fluffy Bunny - entrant

Wow, that's a lot of events. And I still have three more to go.

Whew!

Three CFA events for three consecutive weeks:

Mike and Melissa's Fun Run - 4:50 - Custom

Pure Satisfaction - 2:15 - Custom

Galbraith Mt Tour - 4:30 - 20 miler.

This gives me 20 events for 2006!

Bonus event - White River 50 miler

White River 50 mile: 12:20:45!

I still cannot believe I finished the White River 50 miler in WA on Saturday. I was still recovering from Knee Knacker and was unprepared for the race. This race had it all: falls, freak weather conditions, and my personal favorite, hallucinations! Expect a very surreal blog very soon!

2 down, 1 to go!

Yippee! I finished Knee Knacker in 8:25:52ish! I could jump for joy, if only my knees weren't so knackeredYell!

It was a great first half, followed by an okay 2nd half and I think I ran with a little more intensity as my "Action Jackson" sense was buzzing like crazy!

The volunteers were outstanding, big shout outs goes to the two ladies who sponged my legs down at Hyannis.

Perhaps a black CFA shirt wasn't the best thing to be wearing on a sunny day, gotta represent.

On to the next big event, Haney 2 Harrison 100k! But there may be a side trip to White River or Squamish in the works to break up the constant monotony of endless road miles.

I will apply for KK 2007, maybe I can get some heat acclimation at Western States like Gilles and JohnWink. Unbelievable job, guys.

Cheers,

Baldwin
