2013 - Enduro Year 11

4 May 2013 - Starter Photo

Event Report:

The Trail Gods meant well and there was hardly a cloud in the sky for this years running of the Enduro. After the initial count I believe there were 28 of us gathering at the Gazebo to participate in the event. There were a handful of people who confessed to attempting the Enduro / Vancouver Marathon double header this weekend. One of them being Ken Eng, who seems to try and establish a personal tradition of running 6 laps at the Enduro followed by a Marathon the day after. Chloe Gendron led the charge by being the first runner to complete 6 laps for the day. She also took home the prize for the nastiest wipeout and had some decent size scrapes to back up her claim. Gary Robbins' record of 9 laps will be safe for at least another year. We had 4 runners completing 6 laps with 4 more runners calling it quits after 5. Some of us were fading a bit towards the end of the event, which at least we were able to blame on rising temperatures as the morning turned into day. Stetson took home the canine category honours this year with 2 laps on the course (which works out to be at least 3 with all the running back and forth through the brush). There were quite a few people taking advantage of the event being free to Fat Ass newbies and I hope a good time was had by all. I appreciate each and any feedback about the event and how to make it even more fun in the years to come. Please feel free to share your personal event report in the comment section of this page.

See you out there,

Marc Schmitz

Host of the Enduro

2012 - Enduro Year 10

May 5 2012 - 19 Starters

Report: As I approached the Second Narrows the rain intensified. I was worried that for the first time, the 6 Hour Enduro, now in it's 10 year,  would be a washout. Oh well I thought, a few runners would show, do a lap or two and I would be home early. As it turned out 19 starters toed the line at 8am, several aiming to run the full 6 hours. The rain eased than stopped shortly after the start making the conditions ideal. The upper trail was muddy, but no one complained. Michael Wardas put in a very consistent effort to ran 7 laps, while Meredith Cale of Vancouver led all females with 5 laps in 4:30. Ken Eng of Smithers returned for a second year in a row to run 6 laps. Just like last year, Ken would follow his Enduro effort by running the Vancouver Marathon the next day.

Thanks again for all those who showed up to run the Enduro, it was another great day on the North Shore!

2011 - Enduro Year 9

April 30 2011 - 30 Starters

Report: 28 runners toed the line for the 9th addition of the North Shore Enduro. Temperatures were ideal for the starters, but a little on the cool side for the underdressed lap counter. Michael Wardas lead the way for the guys; Dana Samis for the ladies. Both put in a strong 6-lap performance, along with Enduro veteran Karl Jensen and Ken Eng of Smithers. Ken was supposed to run the Capital Peak Ultra today; however, he left his passport back home in Smithers.

A lively group from Mission and Maple Ridge showed up for their first CFA event. Simone of Maple Ridge enjoyed the abundant mud puddles, while Anna left the course in search of more climbs.

While there were no bear sightings this year, James Clarke lost his dog. Fortunately, Desmond found the dog and had Ken return him to James. I gave them reward points for their effort.

Thanks to all those who participated; hope to see you again next year.

2010 - Enduro Year 8

Starter Photo 8 May 2010: 27 Starters

Report: The sun was shining on May 8 during the 7h running of the North Shore Enduro at Seymour Demonstration Forest. We didn’t see any bears this year, but two large deer did manage to saunter by the picnic area before disappearing in the forest.

With 28 participants, including return 2009 runners Jason and Lauren Eads, who flew in the day before from St. Louis, Missouri, conditions were ideal on the Lynn Loop Trail.  Jason was able to complete the most loops under the 6-hour timeframe with a total of 7 laps in 5:40:58.

Seven runners were able to complete six laps – Michael Wardas, Glenn Pace, Karl Jensen, Pushpa Chandra, Jim Swadling, Matt Sessions, and John Machray (slightly over at 6:14). Grand Master runner, Jim Swadling, holder of numerous BC Athletics road racing awards, completed his six loops in an amazing time of just over 4:40 (an average of 46-min. per loop).

The runners no doubt found the Enduro ideal ultra training for upcoming BC races Stormy and Fat Dog. In June Karl Jensen and John Machray will be at Big Horn in Wyoming. Pushpa Chandra will be competing in the 89K Comrades Marathon in South Africa on May 30, and then on June 5 she will swing over to the Entabeni Game Reserve for the Big 5 Marathon. Yes, there will be lions, leopards, rhinos, and water buffalo on the course. And yes, there will be helicopters overhead to monitor the wildlife situation so they don’t harm the runners! Good luck Pushpa.

Special thanks to Jackie Montgomery for sharing her homemade power squares and Mike Wardas for sharing his grapefruit slices. And thanks to CFA newcomer Reagan and son Isaac for supplying the table with shrimp cocktail and cheering on the runners.

Newcomers to the sport Imelda Wong (3-laps) and Heather Urquhart (2-laps) both had a strong showing. And last but not least, good bye to Gilles Barbeau, a long-time BC ultra runner who will be moving back east to Quebec this summer. Good luck to you Gilles, though I’m sure we’ll be seeing you at a few of the ultras in North America.

Thanks again everybody.

Andy Nicol & Michelle Fredette

2010 North Shore Enduro - TAKE TWO!

My birthday is May 10th. I'm turning 32 tomorrow. Doesn't bother me too much, honestly. I never believed 30's to be very old, but I especially don't since I'm well in to my 30's now! ;-)

Every year, without fail, Lauren asks me what I want for my birthday. I usually start with "I don't know" or "nothing, really". This year was different. I asked Lauren back: "what do I REALLY want?". And she said, "yes, what do you REALLY want?". So I replied with: "to go back to run the North Shore Enduro in North Vancouver with Club Fat Ass!".

Lauren hopped right on the computer and we bought some tickets!!! Thankfully, we had some good friends on the North Shore to bunk with - Thanks T/J Estates! You're always the most gracious of hosts.

What I'll call the "Weekend Enduro Event" started for Lauren and me on Friday afternoon. We arrived on the North Shore to a lovely dinner with Ean, Sibylle, Andy, Michelle, Wendy, Josh, Johanna, Eric, Karl & Lorraine - a really nice crowd! We feasted on home cooked goodies like vegan curry, roasted garlic/onion potatoes & grilled chicken. AMAZING. This "fueling" would eliminate any excuse for not having the gas to go a full 6 hours on Saturday morning during the run.

In his usual fashion, Ean "Action" Jackson introduced a wild card by offering the group a small taste of some Slovakian "medicine" he found at a sketchy pharmacy. No JOKE! I mean, come on, you all know Ean! This hooch (I mean..."medicine") was 32% alcohol by volume! Ean swears it tastes like Jägermeister. I'll reserve my comments for what I think it tasted like because this is a PG level note. Wisely, I kept it to just one small serving of this stuff. Just didn't seem like the right elixir to O.D. with on the night before a big run.

Lauren and I were very much enjoying the conversation with the gang, but we were coming from a 2-hour time zone difference out east, so tiredness caught us pretty quickly and we retired early to rest up for Andy's race in the morning. It was exciting to think that I had been on the North Shore for the 1st time exactly one year earlier to run this event, and I was coming back in good shape, eager to have another go!

At 8am on Saturday morning there were about 25 or 26 Club Fat Ass members ready to go. Andy, in the truly relaxed & easy going spirit of CFA, rolled in at about 7:55 to kick things off. 8:01 and off we went! Weather really doesn't get better than the conditions we runners and park goers, alike, were blessed with. It was a cool & crisp 45 degrees with nearly cloudless & deep blue skies. Gorgeous there in Lynn Canyon. The temps gradually rose to a very pleasant 60 degrees throughout the afternoon.

As the group headed out for the first loop I settled in with Ean A. Jackson and Chad Hyson. These two are more experienced runners than me, and I wanted to put down a decent time, so I just tried their pace for a while to see how things would shape up. Plus, my fatal flaw is ALWAYS going out too fast. Ean & Chad, I knew, were just way too experienced for that rookie crap. Sticking with them, I believed, would serve me well later in the long 6 hours ahead.

The first 1.6 miles, or so, are a rolling groomed trail along Lynn Creek heading towards the mountain. It's a pleasant stretch on your first loop or two because the cold air and water are rushing off the mountain and it feels like a huge air conditioner blowing gently as you make your way to "the climb". "The Climb" begins right after the 1.6 mile turn off of this groomed trail and goes directly in to what I calculate to be a 18-20% grade climb up rocks, stairs & roots. Something like a 600-700ft climb in about 1/4 to 1/2 a mile - WOW, it's hard. However, I was prepared for this since I had run a few laps on this course the previous year. I couldn't run that thing when completely fresh, so I knew better than to try and just power hiked as best I could.

Once it levels out at the top it's an extremely technical and winding trail along the mountainside. This is my FAVOURITE part of the trail! It's rolling hills, tons of technical obstacles, and a nice downhill BOMB back to the groomed path that returns runners to the start/turn-around/finish on this 7.6k loop. After the first loop, it was just Chad and I running along together and having great conversation with the faster runners somewhere out ahead of us. Chad shared some cool stories of his 100 milers and other Foolish adventures, like the Hijinx! Holy smokes, he and the other Fools really are FOOLS, but that's a compliment if you know who and what the fools are ;-)

Anyhow, in to our 2nd lap Chad mentions that he only has time for 3 laps or so. CRAP! That means I'm running Chad's 3 lap pace and I'm aiming for 6 or (if I'm really lucky) a bonus 7th. So much for not being out too fast :-(   Then, Chad says, "hey, you're probably not out too fast, this is about my 6 lap pace also". While I appreciated these encouraging words, I was guessing Chad's 6 lap pace was a fair amount quicker than what I could muster.

It was just quick enough that Chad decided he had time for a FOURTH lap. I was glad to hear this, because I was actually feeling like I could use the company. I swear, that hill at mile 1.6 gets taller with every single lap! Chad cruised in with me on the fourth lap and that was it for him - off to hang with the family. Thanks for the company Chad - thoroughly enjoyed running with you!

As I went out for lap 5 I was solo and actually managed a negative split vs. Lap 4 - so things were going in the right direction. Lap 6 was coming, but not going as quickly as I had hoped. What was a lovely jog along Lynn Creek back to “The Hill” on the first lap had become an arduous stretch of the course. The relative flatness of this portion really took a mental toll because there was no excuse NOT to run. Insanely, I ached to get to that damned hill so I could hike again! In any case, I was really questioning whether 7 was going to happen. I was calculating that I had plenty of time, but wasn't sure if I had the will power. Luckily, while running the downhill on the 6th lap, merely a mile or so from the turn-around, I bumped in to Pushpa Chandra! Pushpa was chipper and we were discussing how we weren't sure we were game for another loop, but we knew we had time. We split up on the downhill with words something along the lines of "well, we'll see how we feel at the turn - after all, this IS a 6hr race, not a 5hr race".

Upon arrival at the table for the turn I debated with myself on whether a 7th lap was a good idea with a 50-mile race coming up next Saturday. Then Pushpa came cruising in! We looked at each other and I asked if she had one more in her. She seemed to "sort of" nod or otherwise indicate that she did. I barked, "I will if you will!" and she was out of there like a shot! Pushpa was just the boost I needed.

I'm really glad at this point that I went for the 7th and realized even if I had to slow down, I had enough time to make the 6hr cut for a complete loop. I started feeling a little dizzy across the top of the ridge (getting low on calories, I guess), but I was so close to the finish that I just tried to hold it together as best I could. Sure enough, I made it in at 5:40:58 for the 7 loops! WOOO HOOO! I was greeted by Lauren with a solid high-five and Pushpa wasn't far behind and came in with a congratulatory hug. Way to dig deep, Pushpa!

Great surprises on the turn-arounds yesterday, as well. Reagan White couldn't run in the event, but he went out of his way to stop by to say high to Lauren and me. Thanks Reagan - always great to see you man!!!

Craig Moore was also there on my 3rd or 4th loop (can't remember exactly which) but I was glad to see him too. I had made it a brief turn around, but at least we got to say "hi".   :-)

Always good to see my friend, the Foolish Gilles Barbeau, on the trails.

Somewhere in there I SWEAR there was a David Crerar sighting - at least I think it was him???

All-in-all, a REALLY FINE day. Couldn't think of a better way to spend a birthday weekend than romping through the woods on the stunningly beautiful trails on the North Shore.

The finisher party included a couple of whopper 20oz draft Guinness beers and a tasty grilled salmon sandwich with yam fries – HIT THE SPOT. Really doesn't get better than that. Even though my sides were sore from the running, I appreciated the post event chuckles provided by the legendary John Machray & Karl Jensen - you two are a couple of cards!

Thanks Andy, & the rest of Club Fat Ass, for another wonderful event and ensuring a FANTASTIC Birthday Weekend for me - nothing less than spectacular and I hope to see you all again very soon!

Conditions were ideal on the intense 7.8 km course, featuring exposed roots, boulders, loose gravel, and steep grades where runners have 6-hours to complete as many loops of the course that they can handle.

Garry Robbins managed 9 loops under 6-hours, setting a new course record in a time of 5:34. Aided by Ryan Melcher in the last few loops, it's doubtful this record will be broken any time soon. Three women completed six loops within the time frame -- Jackie Muir, Kirsten Ramage, and Lorie Alexander.

Club Fat Ass Events- black bear on the runParticipants at the start/finish area around 11:30 witnessed a rather large black bear ambling up the suspension bridge trail towards the ranger hut. Though he was little too close for comfort, he appeared to be disinterested in the people behind the flashing cameras and continued on his trek through the woods.

A nice gathering at the Seymour Pub followed a great day. Thanks to our sponsors Kintec Footlabs, Trail Runner Magazine, and Kinesys.

2008 - Enduro Year 6

Karl Running in the 2006 EnduroReport: The Sixth running of the North Shore 6- Hour Enduro was a success. We were very lucky with the weather as the anticipated rain held off. However it was cold for those in the gazebo (Wade and Danielle). In all 18 people ran at least 1 lap of the course. Once again Randy Hunter's record of 8 laps in 5:39 is safe, and possibly untouchable. Mark Lesack picked up his second victory at the Enduro by running 7 laps in 5:22. Good to see some new faces, hope you enjoyed the event. Special thanks to Kintec for their support. Danille from Kintec came out to aid the runners and keep a frozen Wade (time keeper) company.
Around ten of us showed up at the pub, everyone received a prize (Thanks to our sponsors Kintech and Trailrunner Magazine!). Now the bad news. My camera did not work. I'm disappointed because I have a group photo from each year.

Photos: To Andy's dismay, his camera was not cooperating. If you have any images of the day, please upload to Flickr.com, add to the CFA Flickr group and tag with Enduro2008 NorthShoreEnduro2008 NorthShoreEnduro and ClubFatAssEvents.

2007 - Enduro Year 5

12 May 2007 - 24 Starters

Sunny skies and ideal trail conditions greated runners at this years 6-Hour Enduro. The 4th edition of the Enduro attracted 24 runners eager to start their 6 hour jaunt through the Lynn Loop. This 7.6km loop is a good mix of easy foot paths and rocky rooty trail. Randy Hunter's 2005 record of 8 laps in 5:39 looked to be in danger when Dom Repta and Matt Sessions put their game face on. However, once they saw a group of retired runners on the lawn enjoying the days sun, they decided 7 laps was plenty. Six other runners knocked off 6 laps including Jackson who chalked up his 87th ultra. Whether you ran 1 lap or 7, it was great to see a large group of runners come out and enjoy some exercise on a perfect day.

A special thanks to Al Harman for helping me with the timing. Because of Al I was able to slip in a few laps myself. A big thank you also to the sponsors of this event.   Be reminded that CFA members receive great discounts when shopping at NSA.  Please support them and show them your appreciation.

Until next year...

2006 - Enduro Year 4

North Shore Enduro 2006 - Starter Photo
North Shore Enduro 2006 - Starter Photo (click on the photos to see a slide show of all Enduro photos)

The 4th annual North Shore 6-hour Enduro was run under perfect conditions. The sun was shining, the temps were cool and 31 participants eagerly toed the line to start a day's work on the trails. Randy Hunter's 8-lap record is safe for now, but Mark Lesack and Bill Dagg grinded out 7.

Two relay teams, the Bonkey Dollocks and Team Jones participated. The 3 runners who made up the Bonkey's, Carl, Carl Jr., and Brooke, are new to Club Fat Ass, and look forward to running more;Club events. Team Jones took turns running 2 laps each while their kids ran laps around the tent their parents set up for them. Unfortunately for Team Jones, the kids never napped!

I would like to thank all the runners for coming out. This year's event was the biggest Enduro yet. I look forward to seeing you all next year on Saturday May 12, 9am sharp!

2005 - Enduro Year 3

No One Can Hunt Down Hunter!

Randy Hunter of North Vancouver set an incredible pace from start to finish to win the 2005 North Shore 6-Hour Enduro, an annual Club Fat Ass event. Randy seemed to gain strength and momentum with each lap of the challenging 7km loop. Finishing 8 laps (56 km) with a total time of 5:39, Randy’s nearest competitors were only able to rack up 6 laps before calling it a day by the 3 pm cutoff.

The course at Seymour Demonstration Forest contained gentle flat sections, a bit of single-track with numerous twists and turns, and a demanding technical part that included exposed roots and rocks. Mere weeks before the event, the Enduro was forced to move venues due to a mountain bike event happening the same weekend. Dom Repta, Ean Jackson and Event Host, Andy Nicol, were able to come up with a new loop course that was a bit longer and more challenging.

Race day saw 16 solo runners and two relay teams come out to try the new course. Runners ran under nearly perfect conditions as the expected rain never materialized. The idea behind Enduro is to run as many laps as possible in a 6-hour period. Relay teams can alternate laps or run together with total laps being calculated. Everyone seemed to have a good time with only a few twisted ankles reported.

The post-event party was held at the Seymour Pub where runners enjoyed good food and drink and door prizes were drawn. Special thanks to Kate from KPL Enterprises for setting up a table at the start/finish area for runners to sample energy bars and fitness drinks. Next year the Enduro returns to it’s traditional venue at Camp Brick, located down the road from the Seymour Demonstration Forest park gates, and the original 3.25km loop.
